TII.11 The student will identify major theatrical styles,
including classical, Renaissance, modern, contemporary,
and non-Western, including
1. identifying universal characters, situations, themes, and
ideas in theatre;
2. identifying the use of symbolism and cultural and
historical clues in dramatic texts; and
3. describing historical production designs, techniques, and
performance practices.
The student will use this lesson to help them to understand the
Commedia dellArte style of theatre as well as the characters the
were prominent and helped to shape all theatre that followed.
Identifying the characters will be a step in understanding similar
characters that are present in most forms of theatre. Students will
also examine the specific character traits through clues provided in
the Character Traits and through this identification connect to the
cultural and historical aspects that caused the characters to develop
as well as indicating how these characters have persisted into
modern theatre, albeit under different name.
Through watching the video and learning about the specific aspects
that differentiate Commedia dellArte the students will examine the
production designs and techniques as well as the performance
practices that make the performance style unique.
