Running east, west, and south we find the cost of this

path by the following equation:

$350,000 (8 + 15 + 32)

Finding the Value which is equal to $19,250,000.

Running west through the mountains we are able to

find the distance and cost by the following:

$350,000 (24 + 15) + $4,500,000 + $180,000 + 5 ($75,000)

Simplifying this we get $18,705,000. Less costly than

previous route.

To find the shortest distance we will be solving

a right triangle for an unknown value c, which
is Value of shortest distance. Using the
Pythagorean Theorem we get:

152 + (32 8)2 = c 2

c 2 = 801

C = 28.3019

Now we put c into the expression:

$350,000 (c) + 90,000 (c) -> $350,000 (28.3019) + $90,000 (28.3019) -> $12,452,880

Which is less than the previous two but a significant amount.

To find this distance we use the following

expression:

$350,000 (24) + $90,000 (15)

This gives us the cost of $15,000,000. Not our

lowest.

In the above diagram we can see a few dierent variables. x will represent distance of pipe
over BLM ground. p will represent the distance of pipe over private land. We must first find a
cost function to begin optimization. Looking towards Pythagorean theorem to find the value of
p we get:

p 2 = 152 + x 2 ->. p 2 = 225 + x 2 -> p = 225 + x 2

Our cost function must look like this:

C = (350,000 + 90,000) (p) + 350,000 (24 x)

Inserting known variable p to make Ci n terms of x:

C (x) = $440,000 ( 225 + x 2 ) + $350,000 (24 x)

Now we find the derivative of the function:

440,000
C (x) = $350,000

225 + x2
Now we solve for zero to find critical point, the minimum we are looking for.

440,000
225 + x 2 = -> 225 + x 2 = 1.5804x 2 -> 225 = .5804x 2 -> x = 19.689
350,000
miles

Because positive is only in our domain, we must accept 19.689 as our x Value. Now we solve
for p by inserting known value x.

P= 225 + 19.6892 -> P = 24.7519 miles.

24-x is the distance from the refinery that the pipe begins to be on BLM land that is 4.311
miles. To find the angle we turn to trigonometry and use arccos().

( 24.7519 )
15
arccos = 52.6982 degrees.

Determining the cost we input the found x values into the cost function.

( )
C (19.689) = $440,000 225 + 19,6892 + $350,000 (24 19.689)

This comes to a total of $12,399,687.49. The lowest cost is to follow this last path. It will save
thousands of dollars.

Reflection

As I have been enrolled in Calculus I, I have been amazed by how useful

this skill is. The way this course was set up allowed me to see the application of
The skills in a way I have never been able to see before in any other math
course.

My favorite topic was that of optimization. Being able to use dierentiation

to be able to discover what would be the cheapest way to make a product or
what is the optimal amount of something to get the greatest return. I really
enjoyed learning that. Being able to see how position, velocity, and acceleration
were related opened my mind to many possibilities of real world application.

This course was what I needed to pull the Maths together and make real
understanding and use of the algebra I had learned in previous courses. Working
more with Functions and making use of them was also a fun topic.

Currently I am getting into Integration. This already has peaked my

interest in the possibilities. What we can learn from it.

Overall, this course has allowed me to look at change in a dierent way. I

am able to make sense of it better and in many cases able to understand it in
the form of math and be able to manipulate it to get more understanding. This
has been my favorite class and I will always respect what love of math it has
given me.
