VARUNA JAPAM SEEKING COPIOUS RAIN

Expressing concern over 35% deficit rainfall in Telangana so far, the authorities of Chilkur Balaji temple
organised Varuna Japam here on Thursday. A special ritual invoking Varuna to bless the State with
copious rain was performed in Osmansagar lake near Chilkur Balaji temple by ritwiks, standing in
waist-deep water. The chant lasted for over two hours.
Vedic pandits from Veda Bhavan led by Srirama Ghanapati also participated in the ritual along with
14 other scholars. Chilkur Balaji temple chief hereditary priest Soundararajan participated in the Japam
by sitting on the banks of the lake. (The Hindu 14-7-2017)

Which means it is the Almighty Parabrahmam which has manifested into trees, forest and is

Following this ordinance, we in Chilkur Balaji temple have been planning and maintaining a
good green garden around the temple and also have been instigating the forest department to plant
trees around the lake which they have been doing with devotion.
Trees need to be worshipped and protected as they are the only source of Oxygen replenishment
to our atmosphere. It is reported that 50% of world forests decimated. As a result The Carbon-di-
oxide (CO2)concentration is growing and is around 390 molecules per every million air molecules (ppm)
in the world with a steady increase of 2ppm every year. This would mean that within a short period
the threshold for serious climate change of 450-470ppm would soon be reached. It is said that Increased
CO2 concentration and lowered Oxygen concentration can have catastrophic effects on Mankind including
loss of rational thinking. With Indias population growing three fold after independence there has been
significant deforestation for agrarian and inhabitation reasons causing trees to dwindle . Several cities
have warmed and so as Hyderabad and Telengana state. Under these circumstances we commend
the Telengana Chief Minister, Shri K.Chandrasekhara Rao (KCR)for his mammoth and visionaryintiative

the programme with devotion by planting a Champak tree sapling at Chilkur Balaji Temple after having

essential item of life. Even though they are cut they provide Shade to seekers and take the brunt of

NEWS NDA ministers seek GST relief for religious bodies
Naqvi bats for Waqf properties; Harsimrat seeks exemption for gurdwaras
Two central ministers want exemption for two religious bodies under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), in first
such voices to emerge from within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), after it rolled out the new tax
regime with much fanfare on Friday midnight.
BJP leader and Minorities Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has promised to seek tax relief for Waqf
properties, which are mostly rented or leased out for religious, educational or charitable purposes.
Akali Dal leader and Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur has already asked for exemption
for purchases related to langar (community kitchen) and other services to gurdwaras. The Shiromani Gurdwara
Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has said that GST will mean an additional annual burden of Rs 10 crore on
gurdwaras. SGPC manages the security, financial, maintenance, besides archaeological and religious as-
pects of gurdwaras.
Under the new law, land leasing, renting of commercial properties and purchase of under-construction housing
projects will attract GST.
Many Waqf boards, which are autonomous bodies under state governments, had approached Naqvi for relief.
Their contention is that most of them are already cash strapped, and are unable to pay salaries and emolu-
ments to their staff. They said many of the properties are encroached, and they would be unable to shoulder
further burden.
At a conference of the Central Wakf Council, Naqvi assured board representatives that the issue will be taken
up with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, as Waqfs are endowments and not commercial properties.
Kaur on Sunday forwarded a letter of SGPC President Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar to Jaitley, seeking exemp-
tion from GST for langar and other gurdwara services.
She asked Jaitley to favourably consider exempting community and religious services. The letter reminds
Jaitely of the fact that he contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Amritsar where Sri Harmandir Sahib or
the Golden Temple runs the world's largest kitchen, offering three meals throughout the year to lakhs of people,
donations for which comes from the humble offerings of devotees.
"Even in the erstwhile VAT regime, langar purchases have never been subjected to taxation. The government of
Punjab has exempted langar purchases at Harmandir Sahib, Sri Kesgar Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Takhat
Damdama Sahib and Talwandi Sabo Gurdwaras from payment of VAT. Such exemptions are not available from
July 1, 2017," the letter says.
The letter reminds the Finance Minister that even under the new GST regime, exemptions have been granted
to various institutions and businesses. "Presently procurement of items like desi ghee, sugar and pulses by
SGPC runs into roughly Rs 75 crore annually, which will now be under the GST bracket of 5 to 18 per cent, thus
increasing the financial burden by Rs 10 crore on gurdwaras," the letter adds.
(New Delhi , DNA Mon, 3 Jul 2017)

NEWS PROTEST GST ON LANGAR, SGPC TOLD
"The SGPC should launch a protest on GST. Putting langar under the GST means placing it under trading, which is
against tenets of Sikhism". Paramjit Singh Sarna, president, SAD (Delhi)
Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) president Paramjit Singh Sarna has criticised the SGPCs reported move of procuring
a GST registration number. Sarna has suggested SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar to launch a massive protest
against the Centres move of imposing the GST on langar and other expenses of gurdwaras.
Instead of giving up before the Union Government and getting registered under the GST, the SGPC president
should launch a protest and the SAD (Delhi) will be the first organisation to support him. Union Minister Harsimrat
Badal should ask the Central government to rollback its decision of imposing the GST on gurdwaras or else, she
should part ways from the government. Putting langar under the GST ambit meant placing it under trading, which
is against the ethics of Sikhism, he said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) approached Union Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal seeking GST exemption on gurdwara purchase.
DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK said, The DSGMC is a non-profit entity and seldom gets any financial aid from
elsewhere. It manages the affairs through donations. Apart from this, it has always been on the forefront in helping
during any natural calamity, disasters or any accident. We also manage old age homes and extend education
assistance by running 12 educational institutions and five aided schools. Keeping these social services in mind,
the Union Government should exempt gurdwaras from paying the GST.
