GETTING THE
WHAT AND WHY
OUT OF THE WAY
BEWARE: Slightly text heavy. Promise, no heavy text beyond this
section! :D
Q: What Waste Are We
Talking About?
The technical term were referring to is Municipal
Solid Waste. This consists of the everyday objects
you discard paper cups, toilet paper, vegetable
peels, sanitary napkins, dead batteries, last
nights empty pizza boxes, empty beer bottles,
well you get the drift..
Look inside your dustbins (all of them!) to know
what were talking about.
Q: Why Is It Such a Big Deal?
The Housekeeping Folks Do a
Wonderful Job Of Taking the
Trash Away Everyday.

Door-to-door collection of waste is just the beginning of the

journey of your waste. Did you know your waste is hauled
into compactor trucks (the big trucks carrying the citys
garbage, leaking of some stinky liquid) and then taken 40kms
away to a dumpyard in Jawaharnagar where it joins 5,000
tonnes of waste from around the city every single day?
This waste decomposes, or worse, burns in hazardous
conditions, choking nearby villages with toxic fumes.
Q: Thats Horrible! Why
Doesnt The Government Do
Anything?
Point taken! Theres a lot the Government can do. As a baby
step, check out the latest Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) 2016
Rules. Theyre super detailed and extremely well thought
out.

But theres also a lot that it cannot do.

It has been proven time and again by waste management
scientists that source segregation (putting your
dry/wet/sanitary/reject wastes into separate dustbins at
home while you discard your waste) is the most scientific
approach to sustainable waste management. Think how hard
it would be for the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority
to sort through and categorize 5,000 tonnes of waste
everyday!
Q: So Whats The Way Out
Of This Mess?
Theres a lot that you and I can do!
Lets understand what source segregation is.
Lets give ourselves the One Week Challenge and
diligently segregate our waste into the categories weve
learnt. Promise, it wont take longer than that to make this
into a habit.
Lets teach all our quaddies, spouses, SV mates, study group
mates, section mates, all friends at ISB, all non-friends at
ISB (networking opportunity?) what segregation is all about
and how cool it is! Coz the ISB Ops team can recycle 90% of
this waste. But only if you segregate..
Lets take these learnings with us outside ISB and be
pioneers!
