Domain C Justification Paper 2

Abstract

The following paper is a justification for the artifacts included within my Professional

Development Quest Portfolio for Domain C: Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning.

Included within this justification is a discussion of TPEs 4, 5, 6, and 7 within Domain C. For the

three artifacts included within my PDQP, I have included a discussion for each artifact-

supporting fulfillment of Domain C.

Domain C Justification Paper 3

Domain C (Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning) within the California

Teaching Performance Expectations highlights TPEs 4, 5, 6, and 7.

TPE 4 (Making Content Accessible) requires teaching candidates to implement strategies,

practices, and procedures addressing student needs in accordance to state adopted standards.

(Commission on Teacher Credentialing) Teachers must know and understand the state standards

and be able to develop appropriate strategies and practices to make the required content available

to students. Teaching candidates must also know and understand that it is their responsibility to

develop students reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and provide adequate time for

students to practice and apply these skills both in and out of the classroom. (Commission on

Teacher Credentialing)

TPE 5 (Student Engagement) requires teaching candidates to be able to communicate

objectives to students and ensure equal participation of all students in the classroom.

(Commission on Teacher Credentialing) Within this domain, it is the teachers responsibility to

engage students by developing and implementing engaging and content related lessons and

activities. Within this TPE, teachers will also make content applicable to real world situations

along with extent intellectual and critical thinking among students. (Commission on Teacher

Credentialing)

In TPE 6 (Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices) teachers must be able to

development and implement appropriate teaching practices for the grade level being taught.

(Commission on Teacher Credentialing) Within my area of teaching, I will be focusing on TPE

6C (Developmentally Appropriate Practices in Grades 9-12). TPE 7 (Teaching English Learners)

requires teaching candidates to be able to know and understand, along with apply appropriate

theories, principles, and instructional practices for instructing English Language Learners

(ELLs). (Commission on Teacher Credentialing) TPE 7 is a vital element for teaching candidates

to achieve competencies in due to the diverse nature of classrooms in todays California climate.

Artifact 1 is an activity where students were placed into groups, provided with a specific

Chinese invention, and required to complete a "Shark Tank" style presentation to the class. This

activity is a reflection of my ability as an educator to meets TPEs 4 and 5. Through this activity I

have shown the ability make content matter accessible to students by creating a lesson that not

only aligns with state adopted standards, but also allows for students to have the resources and

understanding necessary to learn and be successful. This activity also brings in student

engagement where students are engaged and interested within both the content and activity due

to the real-world relevancy and creativity encouraged within the activity.

Artifact 2 is a group activity on the Inca empire where students work within groups in a

group rotation activity to investigate whether or not common Incan myths can be proven true or

false by using the TV show Mythbusters as a basis for the activity. I chose to use this as an

artifact within Domain C as it demonstrates my competency to make content accessible, create

student engagement, and implement developmentally appropriate practices within grade level.

Through this lesson/activity, I was able to take content material that students were generally not

naturally interested in, and implement an engaging and content appropriate lesson for students to

learn and meet lesson objectives.

Artifact 3 is an English Language Learner (ELL) self-evaluation I have developed

addressing my competencies in teaching ELL students along with the development of an activity

addressing ELL students in the classroom. I chose to use this evaluation as a demonstration of

my competencies within TPE 7 (Teaching English Learners). This self-evaluation demonstrates

my competency in knowing and understanding theories, instructional practices, and the needs for

ELL students along with my ability to develop an instructional plan to designed specifically for

ELL students.
