Introduction
In todays society, it seems almost impossible to create something
artistically unexpected. The internet, the new technologies, and social networks,
all complicate the work of guessing an artistic works quality or if it wil be
considered an art piece. Fortunately, in spite of these facts, there are still some
creations that suddenly appear changing and updating everything that could
seem obsolete, thereby creating a new trend or a new horizon within the area in
which it has been developed.
The relevance that contemporary society give to the idea of innovation in
art makes it even more difficult to create an artistic product, that will be
universally accepted as such and also work from a commercial point of view.
Todays audiences favor works which do not demand their physical presence to
be enjoyed; the more restricted their accessibility is, the more difficult it will be
that they reach large audiences: only movies, music and eventually some books
or products of the new media (online or electronic games) achieve it. Hence it is
quite unusual that a musical play has such great success that cause very long
queues and that make a purchase over the internet to have a waiting time of
years.
The play Hamilton started running Off-Broadway at 'The Public Theatre'
selling out its run during the five months it spent there, and then it moved to The
Richard Rodgers or, what we know as, Broadway. Its director and main
protagonist of the play, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has already visited the White
House twice and also the President has attended the theatre several times
accompanied by his family. This relation with high-ranking political
representatives is because the play itself narrates part of the life of one of the
founding fathers of America, Alexander Hamilton. Although Hamiltons life had
gone unnoticed, even in the textbooks of American students, now this historical
figure has gained new fame and it is difficult to find someone who does not
recognize that name, which will also be related to hip-hop because it is the way
of communication he will use during the play.
Before Hamilton, we could find historical musicals like The Civil War,
Evita or 1776, or even hip-hop musicals like Holler if ya hear me with more or
less notable success, but far from being comparable to Hamiltons.
The reasons for this incredible success will be explored in this work
whose intention is to analyze the play in detail by first focusing on the real
historical character, his origins and his relevance within American history and
secondly, undertaking an overview of the development of American musical
theatre placing Hamilton within it, and finally studying the play itself and its
director.
