What is dam?
A barrier constructed to hold back water and raise its
level, forming a reservoir used to generate electricity
or as a water supply.

Nangal Dam is another dam downstream of Bhakra Dam. However, sometimes both
the dams together are called Bhakra-Nangal Dam though they are two separate dams.

Uri Dam is a 480 MW hydroelectric power station on the Jhelum River near Uri in Baramula
district of the Jammu and Kashmir
It is located very near to the Line of Control, border between India and Pakistan.
The project cost about Rs. 33 billion (about 450 million EUR or 660 million USD) and was
completed in 1997.
The Indus Waters Treaty was signed in Karachi on September 19, 1960 by Prime Minister of
India Jawaharlal Nehru and President of Pakistan Ayub Khan.

The Tungabhadra Dam is constructed across the Tungabhadra River, a tributary of the Krishna

The main architect of the dam was Dr Thirumala Iyengar, an engineer from Madras.
This is a joint project of erstwhile Hyderabad state and erstwhile Madras Presidency when the
construction was started; later it became a joint project of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh after
its completion in 1953.

Bansagar or Ban Sagar Dam is a multipurpose river Valley Project


on Sone River situated in the Ganges Basin in Madhya Pradesh,
The project was called "Bansagar" after Bana Bhatt, the
renowned Sanskrit scholar of the 7th century.
It also provides power generation of 425 MW in Madhya Pradesh.
The foundation stone of the Bansagar project was laid by the late Prime
Minister Morarji Desai on 14 May 1978.

The Gandhi Sagar Dam is one of the four major dams built on India's Chambal River.
The dam's foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 7
March 1954
The dam's reservoir area is the second-largest in India (after the Hirakud Reservoir), and
attracts a large number of migratory and non-migratory birds throughout the year.
The Chambal River (known in ancient times as the Chamranyavati River) raises in the Vindhya
Range at an elevation of 853 metres west-southwest of the town of Mhow, near Indore.

Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi river


Hirakud Reservoir, 55 km long. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects
started after India's independence.
The dam was completed in 1953 and was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal
Nehru on 13 January 1957.
The amount of earth, concrete and masonry materials used to build the dam is
sufficient to make a road 8 metres wide and pave it from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and
from Amritsar to Dibrugarh in Assam.
