Headed in the Right Direction Lacey Oh #16

Undesirable Behavior Targeted:

The undesirable behavior is third graders overuse of cell phones during social studies class. Students are
often found staring at their cell phones during the lesson and are not focused on the teachers lessons, thus
missing important information. They then ask their peers to repeat the information, which distracts their
classmates and causes them to miss new information. These behaviors result in gaps of retained information.
Desirable Behavior Targeted:
1) Enter the classroom.
2) Put phones on silent.
3) Phones in backpacks before the bell.
4) Have all materials ready.
5) The bell rings, sit quietly.
6) Listen to instructions.
7) Raise your hands with questions.
Types of Positive Reinforcements
1. Immediate R+
When students come to social studies class and demonstrate expected behaviors listed. Each student will
be given a sticker that has one of the cardinal directions on it; e.g. north. The student will earn more
stickers throughout class as they actively participate.
2. Ongoing R+
There is a giant compass poster at the front of the room divided into four sections. At the end of class,
students will place their stickers on the poster. The goal is to fill each of the four sections, starting with
the bottom. After each of the four sections is finished, they will have a mini classroom scavenger hunt.
3. Overall R+
The class will have a final outdoor scavenger hunt using the cardinal directions when the goal is met.
4. Explain how you will quickly & easily administer all R+
I will hand out the personal stickers at the beginning of class and quietly reward students extra stickers
throughout the lesson who exhibited good behavior. Students will place their stickers on the poster at the
end of class and will visually be able to tell if they have completed one of the four sections.
Interactive Learning Activity
TEKs: Third Grade (5) Geography. The student understands the concepts of location, distance, and direction
on maps and globes. The student is expected to: (A) use cardinal and intermediate directions to locate places
on maps and globes such as the Rocky Mountains, the Mississippi River, and Austin, Texas, in relation to
the local community.
After filling all four sections of the compass posters (around six weeks), students will participate in an
outdoor scavenger hunt activity. They will be divided into four different teams. Each of these teams has a
different route with different clues. They will use their cell phones as a compass by downloading a compass
application. They will follow the compass on their phones to find the treasure (snacks for an outdoor picnic).
Explain HOW you will Teach the Desired Behaviors:
I will teach the desired behaviors by helping my students to put their cell phones on silent mode and in their
backpacks. If I hear a cell phone in class, I will teach the behavior again until the behavior is understood. I
will not start class until it is quiet. I will use tricks such as the put your finger on your nose and point to
someone who is talking tactic to teach the students what behaviors I expect. To encourage students to raise
their hands, I will only call on those students whose hands are raised to answer questions.
Explain HOW you will Teach the Plan:
I will teach the plan by modelling what will happen with the stickers each day using a mock event. I will
show them how to silence their phones, put it in their backpacks and sit quietly for class. I will give each
student a sticker and have them place it on the bottom section of the poster. We will then have a very brief
scavenger hunt in the classroom to demonstrate what will happen after each of the four sections are filled.
Provide options
This plan can be changed according to any subject area students are learning. For example, in math class
they can use the different parts of a mathematical equation rather than using cardinal directions. The teacher
can also extend this plan to another behavior, such as passing notes during class. The same strategy would
be used, but the sticker would be taken away if a note was passed during the lesson.
Demonstrate all Necessary Items
Compass posters, cardinal direction stickers, compass, paper, cell phones, snacks, paper clues.
