INTRODUCTION

The main function of STANDARDS MALAYSIA based on MS 30 : Part 10 : 1995 is to foster and
promote standards, standardization and accreditation as a means of advancing the national economy,
promoting industrial efficiency and development, benefiting the health and safety of the public,
protecting the consumers, facilitating domestic and international trade and furthering international
cooperation in relation to standards and standardization.

Toughness is the property of a material to resist impact. Due to traffic loads, the road stones are
subjected to the pounding action or impact and there is possibility of stones breaking into smaller
pieces. The road stones should therefore be tough enough to resist fracture under impact. A test
designed to evaluate the toughness of stones i.e., the resistance of the fracture under repeated impacts
may be called an impact test for road stones.

OBJECTIVES

To obtain a suitable aggregates to build a traffic road based on MS 30 : Part 10 : 1995.

To determine and enable to differentiate the size of the aggregate through sieve shaker.

APPARATUS

Sieve Shaker Machine

Sieve ( specific for 10 mm of aggregates )

Tamping Rod

Balance

Tray

Electronic weigh balance

Cylindrical Steel Cup

Impact Test Equipment

PROCEDURE

Sieve the material through IS sieves. The aggregates passing through 10.0mm sieve and retained
on pan comprises the test material.

Pour the aggregates to fill about just 1/3 rd depth of measuring cylinder.

Compact the material by giving 15 gentle blows with the rounded end of the tamping rod.

Add two more layers in similar manner, so that cylinder is full.

Strike off the surplus aggregate on to the tray.

Determine the net weight of the aggregates to the nearest gram(g).

Fix the cup firmly in position on the base of machine and place whole of the test sample in it and
compact by giving 25 gentle strokes with tamping rod.

Raise the hammer until its lower face is 380 mm above the surface of aggregate sample in the cup
and allow it to fall freely on the aggregate sample. Give 15 such blows at an interval of not less
than one second between successive falls.
Remove the crushed aggregate from the cup and sieve it through 2.36 mm IS sieves until no further
significant amount passes in one minute. Weigh the fraction passing the sieve to an accuracy of 1
gm. Also, weigh the fraction retained in the sieve.

Compute the aggregate impact value. The mean of two observations, rounded to nearest whole
number is reported as the Aggregate Impact Value.

DATA TABULATION

Weight of Mould + Aggregate ( 10 mm ) 650

Weight of Mould 330

Weight of Aggregate (M1) 320

Weight of Aggregate Passing Sieve 2.36 mm (M2) 70

Weight of Aggregate Retained sieve 2.36 mm (M3)\ 250

DATA CALCULATION

DISCUSSION

Classification of aggregates using Aggregate Impact Value is as given below:

Aggregate Impact Value Classification

<20% Exceptionally Strong

10 20% Strong
20-30% Satisfactory for road surfacing

>35% Weak for road surfacing

Based on the experiment, the aggregate impact value is 21.9% which is in category as satisfactory for
road surfacing. Hence, it is suitable to build a road within the aggregate impact value. Somehow,
there were few of precaution that should be take to achieve a exceptional strong aggregate for road
surfacing :

To wear safety shoes & goggles at the time of testing.

Before testing, machine should be properly checked.
Special care should be taken that no outer air enters when using the balance.
After test clean the sieve by a smooth brush.
Keep all the exposed metal parts greased.
Keep the guide rods firmly fixed to the base & top plate.
Equipment should be clean thoroughly before testing & after testing.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the percentage of the aggregates depends on the quality of the aggregate. In this test,
we can conclude that :

The percentage of aggregate impact value : 21.9 %

The lower percentage of impact value indicates the aggregate was tougher and more resistant to
abrasion.
