Flare Radiation 1.3 User Manual

1. INTRODUCTION
Flare Radiation is a simple and user friendly application for flare radiation studies
and preliminary designs of flare system. This user manual has been provided to
represent capabilities of this software and to show how this application should be
used.
In next sections of this manual, all parts of software have been represented. All user,
even professional engineers, are highly recommended studying this manual prior
using the software.

2. SOFTWARE PACKAGE
The software package is comprised of 2 major files:
1- Software
2- User Manual

3. HOW TO START
Double click on software file, then select Start (see Fig.1). If your software is
original with a valid license, a welcome message should appear.

If you cannot see the welcome message please read the error message and follow
instructions. Do not use a corrupted software! Do not use a corrupted software! You
can always download a free, original and updated FA4PE software from our website.
After license validation, you may start using this software as stated in following
sections.

4. RADIATION CRITERIA
First, you should set/finalize the Radiation Criteria. Usual criteria for flare
radiation studies are available as default values (see Fig.2). If available values are
acceptable for your studies, press Apply Criteria button (Fig.2, item 1).
Description of each radiation intensity level has been provided next to it.

Fig.2 Radiation Criteria

If you decide modifying radiation criteria, please note that description of each
radiation level is constant. So any change shall be in accordance with available
explanations. To modify radiation criteria, press Edit Criteria button (Fig.2, item

2) and then modify radiation values as per applicable standards / requirements. After
modifications, press Apply Criteria button to apply changes (Fig.2, item 1). A note
is available on this page to help you (Fig.2, item 3).

5. INPUT DATA
After finalization of radiation criteria, you should provide input data for further
calculations. To do so, click on Input Data tab and fill out required data /
information (see Fig.3). After completing required inputs, press Confirm Inputs
button (Fig.3, item 1). If you decide editing inputs (after inputs confirmation), press
Edit Inputs button (Fig.3, item 2). Edit inputs and press Confirm Inputs button
(Fig.3, item 1). A note is available on this page to help you (Fig.3, item 3).

Fig.3 Input Data

Sometimes specific data are not available, especially at early stages of design. This
software can provide typical / preliminary values for inputs.

If you do not have sufficient input data, excluding Maximum Flare Gas Flow Rate
which shall be provided by user, you may use dedicated check boxes for preliminary
estimations. For estimating lower heating value (LHV) and emissivity, software will
ask for more information and for other inputs, software provides typical values. Fig.4
illustrates how software asks for complementary information and provides typical
input values.

6. DESIGN
When Radiation Criteria and Input Data tabs are completed you may proceed to
Design tab. Design tab, at 1st step, looks like Fig.5. To start calculations, criteria
and inputs shall be specified / confirmed (Fig.5, item 1). If both boxes (Fig.5, item
1) are checked, press Start Calculation button (Fig.5, item 2).
At this stage software calculates minimum, maximum and recommended flare stack
heights (Fig.6, item 1) and asks for your viewpoint about flare stack height (Fig.6,

item 2). If you prefer applying your desired flare stack height, select Use Other
Flare Stack Height and enter stack height (Fig.6, item 3).
After selecting stack height, press Prepare Results button.

7.1. Output Summary

This section provides main calculations results of studied case.

7.2. Radiation Report

A complete radiation report is available in this section. Distance of radiation
intensity isopleths from flare stack are reported at different elevations.

7.3. Smokeless Operation

Smokeless operation requirements have been estimated and reported in this section.
Proper smokeless operation shall be finalized by professional suppliers.

7.4. Warnings
Make sure that you have reviewed this section to avoid any major mistake.

7.5. Report
Complete report of performed study is prepared in this section. You can use the
Save Report button to save studied case on your computer (See Fig.7, item 1).

8. MANUAL SUMMARY
To use this software following steps shall be considered:
1- Start the software
2- Edit / Confirm radiation criteria
3- Provide and confirm required input data
4- Review minimum, maximum and software recommended flare stack height and
select an appropriate stack height
5- Review calculations results
