SECTION 41 52 00

BINS HOPPERS AND CHUTES

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This specification covers the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture, testing,
supply, and erection supervision of BINS, HOPERS AND TRANSFER CHUTES,
complete with all necessary associated equipment and structures as described in these
Specifications, ready for service for the voestalpine gowest Project, located at Portland,
TX, USA.

B. Work Package Contractor must have final and total responsibility for design, supply,
erection supervision, performance, and safe operation of the equipment supplied in
accordance with this specification and the Agreement.

C. Supplied equipment and structures must comply with all local safety requirements.

1.2 SCOPE

A. Bins, Hopers, and Transfer Chutes must be supplied as part of the Material Handling
system as complete functional units, as indicated in this Specification and in the
equipment drawings, with all the mechanical, structural, electrical, control components,
materials, and associated equipment required for immediate installation and entry into
service, including, but not limited to, the following items:
1. Main body.
2. Reinforcements.
3. Internal liners.
4. Supporting saddles.
5. Inspection doors.
6. Discharge flanges.
7. Instrument connecting flanges.
8. Unit-specific instrumentation.
9. Unit-specific electrical items.
10. Protective and finish coatings per NACE SP0108.
11. Equipment identification stainless steel plate.
12. Detailed engineering, including calculation reports and loading plans for all the
items supplied.
13. Site survey and dimensional verifications.
14. Suitable packaging for transportation to the installation site.
15. Special tools required for installation, operation and maintenance.
16. Erection engineering, including lifting and welding procedures and structural
lifting verification.

1.3 STANDARDS

A. Work included in this Section must conform to the following, in addition to the Contract
Documents, except as specified otherwise within this Section:
1. ASTM A307 - Standard Specification for Carbon Steel Bolts and Studs, 60.000
psi Tensile Strength
2. ASTM A325 - Standard Specification for Structural Bolts, Steel, Heat Treated,
120 /105 ksi Minimum Tensile Strength
3. AISC Specifications for Structural Steel
4. AWS D1.1 Structural welding code Steel
5. DIN 1055 - Design loads for buildings and loads in silo bins
6. NEMA National Electrical Manufacturers Association
7. NFPA 70 National Electrical Code
8. NACE SP0108 Protective Coatings
9. OSHA safety Standards Occupational Safety and Health Administration

B. Should there be conflict between these standards, codes, regulations and


recommendations, the most stringent must apply.

1.4 NAMEPLATE TO BE PROVIDED BY WORK PACKAGE CONTRACTOR

A. Each piece of equipment must have attached a permanent clearly visible 316 stainless
steel nameplate with embossed or engraved information and data in English language.
The nametag must list, at minimum, the following information:
1. Owners equipment catalog TAG number.
2. Brand / manufacturer name.
3. Serial number.
4. Equipment type and model.
5. Total weight.
6. Order number.
7. Date of manufacture.

PART 2 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

2.1 GENERAL OPERATION REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED BY WORK PACKAGE


CONTRACTOR

A. Bins, hopers, and transfer chutes must be designed for reliable operation, compatible with
the intended duty, and capable of conveying and/or storing materials in a highly corrosive
marine environment.

B. All mechanical components must be selected assuming the most unfavorable operating
condition, as specified in the Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).

C. Each item must be designed to ensure maximum standardization of components with the
rest of the equipment to be installed in the facility. For this reason, some specific
preferences in component selection may be requested by CH2M HILL.

D. Handled materials technical characteristics are shown on the Materials Handling Basis
for design Report.

E. Equipment nominal and design capacities definition are shown on the Process Flow
Diagrams.

F. Conveyors preliminary geometry and arrangement are shown on the Conveyors


arrangement drawings.

2.2 GENERAL TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED BY WORK PACKAGE


CONTRACTOR

A. Bins, hopers, and transfer chutes must be designed based on the project performance
requirements for capacity and other technical data contained in the Materials Handling
Basis for design Report.

B. Equipment arrangement, sizing, and conveyor shown on the engineering drawings depict
a preliminary design that must be optimized during the bidding and detailed engineering
development.

C. Bins, hopers, and transfer chutes must be designed and selected in accordance with the
conditions established in this specification, the Materials Handling Basis for design
Report, the relevant design criteria and standards, and applicable CEMA
recommendations or equivalent DIN standards.

D. All bins, hopers, and transfer chutes component design and calculation records must be
issued for CH2M HILL for information.

E. Engineering documents must be developed in metric units, except for horsepower and
any other equipment rating that is typically expressed in imperial units in North America.

F. Components selection, such as belts, idlers, bolting, structural shapes, sheet plate, piping
and electrical components must consider imperial units sizes. All gauges, displays,
indicators, and human interface devices must display imperial units.

G. Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Manuals must contain bolt torque tables, parts
lists, clearance specifications, instructions on changing out parts and components,
material specifications, inspection plans, and capital spare part recommendations.

2.3 CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TO BE FURNISHED BY WORK PACKAGE


CONTRACTOR

A. Construction materials must be selected for resistance to abrasive iron oxide pellets, Iron
ore lumps, and Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) contact and service in a marine corrosive
environment.

B. All parts specified with ASTM materials must have certificates; in general, all materials
must have quality certificates. These certificates must be submitted to CH2M HILL upon
request. Other materials with the same characteristics may be used, provided this is
previously approved by CH2M HILL.

C. Parts must have rounded corners to prevent stress build-up.

D. All codes and standards referenced herein must be adopted as per their latest issue.
Alternate codes and standards must be submitted to CH2M HILL for approval.

E. The following materials and their respective codes and standards must be used for
equipment and machines, or equipment and machine supports, in order to fulfill the
performance, durability, economy, and appearance conditions:
1. Forged steel: SAE 1045, SAE 1020 or SAE 4140.
2. Lifting eyes: SAE 1045.
3. Forged steel wheels: SAE 1045.
4. Structural steel for machines and components: ASTM A36 or similar.
5. Stainless steel: AISI 316L
6. Standard bolts and nuts: ASTM A307.
7. High strength bolts and nuts: ASTM A325.
8. Steel cables: ISO 2408 or ISO 3108
9. Bronze for standardized bushings: SAE 62 or SAE 64.
10. Bronze for aluminum bronze bushings: ASTM B148.
11. Dust sealing felt: SAE F10 (minimum)
12. Gaskets: Neoprene

F. When substitute materials are applied other than which is required according to ASTM or
any other code or standard, Work Package Contractor must submit to CH2M HILL a
copy of the certificate or test report proving that the proposed substitute material
complies with the specification in question. At CH2M HILLs discretion, in specific
cases, these reports can be dismissed. The following items may be requested at
CH2M HILLs discretion:
1. Information detailing which lot the fabrication material was selected from,
utilizing identification marks on the steel.
2. Copies of certificates showing the results of physical testing carried out for each
lot, from which the fabrication material was selected.
3. Furnishing of the results of chemical tests carried out for the lot from which the
fabricated steel was obtained.
4. Furnishing of the results of the latest tests carried out during the last 12 months
for a lot that is representative of welding electrodes to be utilized.

PART 3 STRUCTURAL DESIGN TO BE PERFORMED BY WORK PACKAGE CONTRACTOR

3.1 LOADS

A. The static load to be considered in load calculations must include the overall weight of
the equipment, the stored material (full volume), structures, cable conduits, piping and,
where applicable, any material buildups and erection / expansion loads.

B. Dynamic load includes:


1. Transferred material weight.
2. Moving parts weight.
3. Platforms adjacent to the machines.

C. To determine the impact resulting from falling materials, resultant material static loads of
the transferred material volume should be increased by 100%.

3.2 JOINTS

A. Equipment must be designed as to minimize field welds.

B. For field-welded joints, arrangements must be provided to provisionally secure the parts
to be joined

3.3 BOLTED JOINTS

A. All high-strength bolts must be ASTM A325 or ASTM A490 bolts (or equivalent DIN
bolts), except those used merely for fastening purposes, such as those used to fasten
covers, ladders, rails, etc., which may be ASTM A 307 or equivalent DIN bolts

B. ASTM A490 bolts must not be galvanized

C. All bolted joints must have at least two bolts per joint. Gusset plates must be at least
5/16 thick.

D. Tapered washers must be used when elements are bolted to the flanges of I or U
sections.

E. Joints of structures subject to vibration must be provided with nuts, counter nuts and lock
washers.

F. When bolted joints are used to replace welded joints, they must be equivalent in terms of
both strength and stiffness.

G. Bolted joints must be designed such that the number and type of bolts used is kept to a
minimum.

H. All high-strength bolts must be provided with identification markings.

I. After assembly, adjustment and final alignment, all subassemblies subject to
misalignment must be provided with dowel pins to maintain alignment.

J. When base plates are subject to pullout stress, high-strength bolts must be used to join
steel supports.

3.4 WELDED JOINTS

A. All welds must be in accordance with AWS D1.1. Fillet welds must be at least 3 mm
thick and no thicker than 0.7 t, where t is the thickness of the thinnest plate; if a fillet
weld exceeds 10 mm, a full penetration weld must be required.

B. All welds must be continuous and watertight. Deviations to this requirement must be
approved by CH2M HILL.

3.5 FOUNDATION REQUIREMENTS

A. The following data must be submitted to support metallic and concrete structural
engineering:
1. General layout, showing the location of the unit and associated equipment and
indicating the clearances required for maintenance.
2. Outer base plate dimensions and anchoring device layout.
3. Anchoring device specifications (type, material and dimensions)
4. Values and locations of all static and dynamic, horizontal and vertical loads and
bending moments.
5. Grouting requirements
6. Specific recommendations on foundation design and construction.

PART 4 INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED BY WORK


PACKAGE CONTRACTOR

4.1 I&C GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Electrical components and devices must comply with General Requirements for Electric
and Automation, Siemens document C.N6X0.RD1.9-E/ALV010.

B. Designation of electrical components and devices must comply with Equipment


Designation System, Siemens document C.N6X0.RD1.9-E/DOK001.

C. Provide only automation hardware that shown in Siemens document C.N6X0.RD1.9-


E.ALV010_ATT01. Obtain written approval by CH2M HILL for any deviations from
this list.

D. Chutes must be protected by plug chute switches. Switches must be located to insure
their proper operation. The switches must be protected from the direct stream of material
flow. The switch must be mounted so it can be removed for maintenance. At a
minimum, plug chute switches must be located in the discharge chute, at both outlet legs
of a splitter gate, and at the lower chute, i.e. the inlet to the skirtboard. An inspection
door must be located near each switch to provide maintenance access.

E. Radar level transmitters type Siemens Sitrans model #7ML5440-0AA00-0AA1 or


equivalent must be provided for all bins.

PART 5 MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED BY WORK PACKAGE


CONTRACTOR

5.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. All sheet plate elements must be at least 5/16 thick A-36 carbon steel construction.

B. Areas subjected to material abrasion or impact must be lined with 5/8 thickness and
minimum hardness of 500 HB liner plates.

C. Discharge valley angle must not be smaller than 50 from the horizontal.

D. Chutes must have easy-to-open inspection doors suitably sized and located for cleaning,
inspecting, and servicing scrapers and level switches.

E. Inspection doors must have a frame that is welded to the chute and a hinged door. The
door must be constructed of thick stainless steel. The door must have lift-off pin
hinges, so the doors can be both opened or removed. The doors must be furnished with a
continuous, double lip, dust tight seal. The doors must be equipped with a 100mm long
deflector plate to protect the bottom seal from the material stream and material build-up.
The doors must be furnished with a U-shaped handle constructed of round stock. The
door must be furnished with a rotating cam latch and spacers to secure the door tightly
closed. Chute inspection doors must have a minimum 600mm by 600mm opening.
Those areas where 600mm x 600mm inspection doors cannot be installed, and where this
door is only for inspection purposes, 300mm x 300mm opening inspection doors are
acceptable.

F. Chutes liner plates must be arranged in a way that no piece exceeds 55 lbs. weight.

G. Chutes liner plates must be welded to the main body.

H. In those cases where liner plates cannot be installed, rubber liner type Remaline 70 or
equal must be applied. The use of these materials must be approved by CH2M HILL.

I. Chutes must be supplied in flanged spools for simplified erection and maintenance.

J. All chutes must have at least one flanged and bolted removable side for ease of liner
replacement.

K. All bins must have at least one inspection door on the top and one inspection door above
the cone transition structural reinforcement. This door must be designed to open to the
inside of the bin during maintenance.

PART 6 INSPECTION AND TESTING TO BE PERFORMED BY WORK PACKAGE


CONTRACTOR

A. Provide an inspection schedule for fabrication and field operating tests, in order to allow
assessment of performance and equipment suitability in relation to the characteristics and
conditions specified herein.

B. The assessment of the performance and equipment suitability will not be limited to tests
described on the schedule submitted.

C. Prepare all maintenance plans (mechanical, electromechanical, lubrication, predictive


inspection) with the respective execution procedures and submit for Owner and
CH2M HILLs approval.

6.2 FABRICATION INSPECTION

A. Submit Testing and Inspection Schedule including the locations where they will be
carried out. This schedule must include, as a minimum, the requirements listed in the
Work Package, equipment manufacturer requirements, and warranty requirements.

B. CH2M HILL may perform routine inspections of Work Package Contractor and witness
programmed tests and trials. In addition to the tests required by the documents included
in the Work Package, CH2M HILL may request radiographic testing and/or other tests
for weld and material control. Testing costs will be paid by Owner, except if faults are
verified, when they will be on Work Package Contractors cost.

C. Equipment, components or associated materials will be subject to rejection if irreparable


defects or manufacture faults are observed, or when non-compliance with the
specifications is verified.

6.3 PRE-OPERATING TESTS TO BE PERFORMED BY WORK PACKAGE CONTRACTOR

A. Upon completion of equipment erection, pre-operating tests will be carried out.


CH2M HILL may observe tests, calibration, alignment, and system cleaning.

6.4 OPERATING TESTS TO BE PERFORMED BY WORK PACKAGE CONTRACTOR

A. After the field erection of equipment, operating tests will be carried out to check and
verify equipment suitability to the performance characteristics specified. Such tests must
be witnessed by CH2M HILL and Work Package Contractors assigned representative.

B. During the operating tests, Work Package Contractor must develop, on a daily basis,
detailed field records, which must be incorporated into a single report to be submitted to
CH2M HILL in 5 (five) copies, upon conclusion of the operating tests. This report must
state the points checked and results achieved and inform, mainly, corrections undertaken.

C. Static Test: Loads and demanding forces on major parts of fully loaded stationary
equipment will be reviewed under the supervision of Owner or CH2M HILL.

D. Dynamic Test: Loads and demanding forces on major parts of the equipment will be
checked for the following conditions, always under the supervision of Owner or
CH2M HILL
a. Equipment operating without load.
b. Equipment being fed at design capacity.
c. Start of loaded equipment.
d. Stop of loaded equipment.

6.5 PERFORMANCE TEST TO BE PERFORMED BY WORK PACKAGE CONTRACTOR

A. Depending on the type of equipment furnished under this Work Package, the method of
Performance Testing will be specifically designed to test the design criteria and agreed
upon by Work Package Contractor, Owner, and CH2M HILL. The acceptance criteria
for this test will be either a period of time or number of cycles, during which the
equipment must operate at normal working conditions, with no interruptions of any
nature, with no damage, overheating, overloads or excessive wear of any of its
components.

B. Any shutdown occurring during the test period must be considered sufficient for failing
the performance of the equipment.

C. In addition to the tests previously described, Work Package Contractor must describe and
propose the following items. These items may be reviewed and changed by Owner or
CH2M HILL at their discretion:
1. Sequence of operating tests.
2. Instructions for start-up tests.
3. Independent tests, without load, on each equipment section.
4. Precautions during the first operating stage.
5. Precautions before operating stage.
6. Notes on operation.
7. Tests on electrical components.
8. Electrical power and control interconnection tests
9. Tests of instrumentation calibration and gauging.
10. Tests on automation and control systems
11. Interlocking tests
12. Tests on gearbox
13. Tests on couplings
14. Hydraulic system tests
15. Lubrication system tests
16. Instructions for correcting ordinary faults.
