Subject Math

Grade Level 3rd

Learning Objective 3.9 The student will estimate and use U.S. Customary and metric
units to measure a) length to the nearest 1 2-inch, inch, foot,
Content

yard, centimeter, and meter; b) liquid volume in cups, pints,

quarts, gallons, and liters; c) weight/mass in ounces, pounds,
grams, and kilograms; and d) area and perimeter.
Online Activity To start the lesson the teacher will begin by explaining to the
student(s) what area and perimeter is, how they are alike and
how they are different. Then the teacher presents a fun
video/song, Perimeter Around the Area, that the students can
use to help them remember what area and perimeter is. Next
the students will explore a simulation website that allows them
to explore area and perimeter and how it works. The teacher
will first demonstrate with students how to use the program
using the explore, option. The teacher will start by placing
blocks on the grid and explaining how the computer calculated
the area and the perimeter. After explaining to students how it
is done, the teacher will provide time for students to play the
game attached to the simulation where students will explore for
themselves how to make a certain area and perimeter with
these blocks. After completing a few levels in the game the
Pedagogy

students will be given access to another website game where

they can play against a computer to discover the different ways
to create area and perimeter.

Simulation: This simulation allows the teacher to give
examples on how to find area and perimeter and explain to
students how to calculate it for themselves, before allowing
them to play a game using the same simulation website.

A game that students can use in the class to play against a
computer to create a certain perimeter and area and score
more than the computer or human they choose to play against.

This can also be used as a study tool to help students

remember how to create area and perimeter.
