CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
June 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members

SUBMITTED BY: Mike Branson, City Forester

APPROVED BY: Chip Rerig, City Administrator

JUNE 2017 FORESTER REPORT

During the month of June, Forest, Parks and Beach staff continued with the Citys annual weed mowing
program along street right-of ways and park areas. Some areas that were mowed earlier this year have to be
mowed again due new growth spurred by the late rains in April and May.

The Citys on-call tree service contractors continued removing dead trees, finishing nine PG&E partial tree
removals and removing tree stumps. As detailed in the Data Tables below, seventeen public trees were
removed this month and 23 stumps were ground out.

Topes Tree Service completed a second phase of invasive tree removals near the Flanders mansion in
Mission Trail Nature Preserve. Many non-native and invasive trees were removed in accordance with the
recently approved coastal development permit for the Preserve. Some trees could not be removed at this time
due to the close proximity of dusky-footed wood rat nests but will be addressed later this summer when the
rats can be relocated out of the work zone.

In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, contract biologist Joey Canepa continued watering new native
dune plants and counting the population of endangered Tidestroms lupine.

Beach conditions have improved allowing six additional wood burning fire devices to be placed on Carmel
Beach for the 2017 summer season. There are now nine fire units on the beach. Staff continues with the
weekday cleaning and monitoring program as well.

Public Works staff participated in a training session by Environmental Compliance Manager regarding water
pollution control and best management practices to prevent illicit discharges into the storm drain system.
