This new Uptown jewel (a label we can never be thankful
enough for) presents Kenny in two important phases of his
career albeit little documented hence its importance. Two
radio broadcasts, 1966 at the Half Note and 1962 at the
Flamboyan.
The music is fresh and exciting but familiar at the same
time. Theres an element of surprise and discovery em-
bedded in the heart of Dorhams improvisations

Enrico Pieranunzi QUARTET
Live at The Village Vanguard
A live performance at the Vanguard in New York
one night in April 2015: Enrico Pieranunzi played in
quartet with Donny McCaslin on sax, Scott Colley
on double bass and Clarence Penn on drums. The
music Pieranunzi and his quartet deliver here is all
portrayed in the CD title, New Spring: renewal, vi-
tal energy, promises that come true, in the city that
has always been the cradle, school and springboard
for, but also and again the point of arrival of jazz.
This is a modern, internationally-oriented jazz, and resul-
ting from the interplay among four real jazz giants, who
skillfully blend their forceful personalities into excellent
music.

THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE

In December 2015, Scott Hamilton had a superb concert
in Benicassim (Spain) and released as La Rosita. It was a
demonstration of the talent and sensitivity of Hamilton and
the musicians ability to make new and beautiful versions of
classic tunes from the great jazz repertoire. Joined by New
Yorker Dena DeRose on piano, Ignasi Gonzalez on bass
and Jo Krause on drums, The Shadow of Your Smile are 5
more tracks from the same gig and all of them are rendered
with the same natural and warm sound.

Erroll Garners celebrated tune Misty was first recorded
by Sarah Vaughan in Paris for the LP Vaughan and Violins
(Mercury MG-20370), accompanied by an orchestra con-
ducted and arranged by the great Quincy Jones.
This release presents the complete album Vaughan and
Violins along with Vaughans album Close to You (Mercury
SR 60240), taped the following year and also included in
its entirety. Three tunes from the session, which werent
included on the original LP, have been added as a further
bonus.

Joey DeFrancesco
and The People
Project Freedom
Organist Joey DeFrancescos Project Freedom, is his first
album in a quartet setting and features his stellar work
on the Hammond B-3plus contributions on trumpet
and as a vocalist. The album its in part dedicated to
Philadelphias - the so-called City of Brotherly Love -
rich organ history, and is also an expression of what the
city and its people mean to him personally. They perform
originals and a few covers.

recordings made at Londons Pizza Espress in 2011. As
Scott Hamilton writes in the liner notes of the first volume

great soloists with a huge sense of swing!.
There is a magic peculiar to piano trios; an atmosphere so
wrapped that even up tempo pieces feels like ballads. Bill
Evans could create that hush, or Keith Jarrett and a very
few others and this includes, as well, Bill Charlap.

light. It explores material from albums such as Rosewood,
Love Dance, Song of Songs as well as original blues and

This album presents Mobley in a variety of formations
with such musicians like Kenny Barron, Steve Nelson
or Russell Malone. The choice of repertoire is particu-
larly welcome, alternating known melodies like The Very
Thought of You, Walkin, Peace or My Romance with ori-
ginal compositions that do fit nicely in. A mellow sound
with a post-bop aesthetic and superb playing, this al-
bum could be the vehicle to launch Mobley towards that
well-deserved wider recognition.

concert for Radio DRS in Safranzunft, Basel in
1977 in a quintet documents one of Anthony
Braxtons most important small groups with

Meets the Jacob Brothers Groovin High
This CD presents a complete never-befo-
re-heard quartet performance by the un-
forgettable Don Byas, backed by Dutch
players in a set taped live at the Rem-
brandttheater, in Haarlem, Netherlands,
on July 4, 1964. Byas is accompanied
by the brilliant pianist Pim Jacobs, Pims
brother Ruud Jacobs on bass, and John
Engels on drums. This are the only exis-
ting recording of Byas with Pim Jacobs.
The show, recorded in crystal-clear sound
quality, consists of a selection of well-
known standards, many of which are re-
lated to Charlie Parker and to Byas own
role as one of the first legends of bebop.

different sets taped live at the Bellevue
theater in Amsterdam, at VARA studio in

terdam. Mobley is accompanied by the
brilliant pianist Pim Jacobs and drummer
wizard Han Bennink in its only known co-
llaboration to date.

Walking Up
This edition contains Joe Pass earliest
recordings as a leader, including his
1962 LP Sounds of Synanon (Pacific Jazz
combination with baritone horn and
bongos in a program of originals by
Pass and other members of the band.
All of the musicians there, including Pass
himself, were patients recuperating at
the Synanon Drug Center in California
at that time, hence the title of the album.
In addition to the seven songs on the ori-
ginal LP, this release also boasts a rarely
heard blues that completes the session,
as well as a selection of Pass earliest
quartet dates under his own name.

latter LP features him in a larger setting.
