ANY DAY WE WISH, we can start the process of life change.

Spring is the time of plans and projects. The most important thing to
remember is this: to be ready at any moment to give up what you are for what you
might become. An optimist is the human personication of spring. Life is
change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.

READING RAINBOW REVIVED
Iconic childrens show turns digital.
A s host and producer of Public Broadcasting Ser v ices
Reading Rainbow, LeVar Burton nurtured a love of reading in an
entire generation of kids. When the show ended in 2009, after
26 years on the air, it was the third-longest-running PBS series,
outlived only by Sesame Street and Mister Rogers Neighborhood.
The end of the series didnt stop Burton from continuing
his passion for literacy. Last June he launched the interactive
Reading Rainbow app, providing hundreds of books, videos and
virtual tours for kids. Just 36 hours after it debuted, it became
the No. 1 educational app in the country on iTunes.
Theres still a need to connect kids and literature and real-
world experiences. And thats what we did for almost 30 years
on Reading Rainbow, Burton says. We know kids are reading,
and theyre reading a lot.
In less than five months, children using the app have read
more than 700,000 books, and a recent partnership with
National Geographic Kids will only boost those numbers.
Best known for his roles in the landmark TV mini-series
Roots and the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, Burton is an
avid lifelong reader. He says one of his most influential mentors
was his mom, his fi rst teacher.

HEALTHY EYES WEAR SUNGLASSES
Every day that youre outside, youre exposed to dangerous, but invisible, ultraviolet (UV)
sunlight. Left unprotected, prolonged exposure to UV radiation can seriously damage the eye,
leading to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyelid and other eye disorders. Protecting your eyes
is important to maintaining eye health now and in the future.

Shield your eyes (and your familys eyes) from harmful UV rays.
Wear sunglasses with maximum UV protection.

3. Ask: What is your plan to build links? and What kind of sites are you targeting? The best kind
of link is one that is part of a blog post, media story or other content that is actually about you and
your rmnot just a standalone link listed on a site.

4. The rm should develop an editorial calendar that might include regular blog posts, videos and
podcasts. The content should be really interesting and engaging so the audience will share it with
their friends via their social network, and then bloggers and websites will link back to your site,
Shearer says. They should be created to appeal to both humans and search-engine spiders,
which are programs that sift through Internet content and return search results. Each element of the
editorial calendar should build SEO in a way that is logical, powerful and lasting.

5. Make sure all page titles and meta descriptionsthe brief descriptors of pages that appear in a
searchinclude keywords. These, too, should be written to suit people and spiders.

6. What is their social media plan for you? Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and
LinkedIn can all drive trafc to your site. Plus, links imbedded in these media count toward your
Google ranking.

7. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, Lurie warns. Simple consulting starts at $1,000
per month, and active SEO marketing begins at $3,000 per month, he says. Its a craft, Lurie says.

8. You should receive biweekly or monthly reports on the rms efforts and results. This should
include where your site and links have appeared, all content generated and how it was marketed,
and the conversion rate. You probably wont see much change in the rst three months unless a
specic problem is being addressed, Lurie says, but analytics should improve within six months.

9. Frequent involvement. Your SEO rm should be very engaged with your businessnot just
disappear for two weeks and then come back, Lurie says. It should be working closely with your
whole marketing strategy.

Another powerful way to connect with influential bloggers is to easy-to-use online tools that check out how fast a webpage

YOURE READING an article that took five years to writeor more than
100, if you look at it another way.
Five years ago a small group of us worked long days that turned into early
mornings to produce our first issue of SUCCESS. The April/May 2008 issue would
re-launch the iconic brand founded more than a century earlier by Orison Swett
Marden, a self-made entrepreneur, author and proponent of personal achievement.
While recent publishers had focused more on business, our aim, under the owner-
ship of SUCCESS Partners, was to return the magazine to its roots, providing
inspiring, motivational and instructive content. Wed still cover business, but the
key was to make it as relevant and practical as possible for our entrepreneurial
readers. And wed still do profiles of extraordinary people, but our focus wouldnt
be so much on what they accomplished, but how they did it.
Its fitting that leadership is the theme of this fifth-anniversary issue because
each of the people weve profiled over the years has been a leader in some
capacityCEOs, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and people who simply inspired
us with their bold actions.
