1.ThepurposeofthisCodeistoprovideinternationalstandardsforlifesavingappliancesrequiredbychapterIIIofthe
InternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea(SOLAS),1974.

2.Onorafter1July1998,therequirementsofthisCodewillbemandatoryundertheInternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLife
atSea(SOLAS),1974,asamended.AnyfutureamendmenttotheCodewillbeadoptedandbroughtintoforceinaccordancewith
theprocedurelaiddowninArticleVlllofthatConvention.

1.1Definitions
1.1.1.ConventionmeanstheInternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea,1974,asamended.

1.1.2.Effectiveclearingoftheshipistheabilityofthefreefalllifeboattomoveawayfromtheshipafterfreefalllaunchingwithout
usingitsengine.

1.1.3.Freefallaccelerationistherateofchangeofvelocityexperiencedbytheoccupantsduringlaunchingofafreefalllifeboat.

1.1.4.Freefallcertificationheightisthegreatestlaunchingheightforwhichthelifeboatistobeapproved,measuredfromthestill
watersurfacetothelowestpointonthelifeboatwhenthelifeboatisinthelaunchconfiguration.

1.1.5.Launchingrampangleistheanglebetweenthehorizontalandthelaunchrailofthelifeboatinitslaunchingpositionwith
theshiponevenkeel.

1.1.6.Launchingramplengthisthedistancebetweenthesternofthelifeboatandthelowerendofthelaunchingramp.

1.1.7.RegulationmeansaregulationcontainedintheannextotheConvention.

1.2Generalrequirementsforlifesavingappliances
1.2.1.Paragraph1.2.2.7appliestolifesavingappliancesonallships.

1.2.2.Unlessexpresslyprovidedotherwiseorunless,intheopinionoftheAdministrationhavingregardtotheparticularvoyages
onwhichtheshipisconstantlyengaged,otherrequirementsareappropriate,alllifesavingappliancesprescribedinthispart
shall:

.1.beconstructedwithproperworkmanshipandmaterials

.2.notbedamagedinstowagethroughouttheairtemperaturerange30Cto+65Cand,inthecaseofpersonallifesaving
appliances,unlessotherwisespecified,remainoperationalthroughouttheairtemperaturerange15Cto+40C

.3.iftheyarelikelytobeimmersedinseawaterduringtheiruse,operatethroughouttheseawatertemperaturerange1Cto
+30C

.4.whereapplicable,berotproof,corrosionresistant,andnotbeundulyaffectedbyseawater,oilorfungalattack

1.2.3.TheAdministrationshalldeterminetheperiodofacceptabilityoflifesavingapplianceswhicharesubjecttodeterioration
withage.Suchlifesavingappliancesshallbemarkedwithameansfordeterminingtheirageorthedatebywhichtheymustbe
replaced.Permanentmarkingwithadateofexpiryisthepreferredmethodofestablishingtheperiodofacceptability.Batteriesnot
markedwithanexpirationdatemaybeusediftheyarereplacedannually,orinthecaseofasecondarybattery(accumulator),if
theconditionoftheelectrolytecanbereadilychecked.Inthecaseofpyrotechniclifesavingappliances,thedateofexpiryshallbe
indeliblymarkedontheproductbythemanufacturer.

loosegranulatedmaterialoranyaircompartmentwhichdependsoninflationforbuoyancy

.3.becapableofsupportingnotlessthan14.5kgofironinfreshwaterforaperiodof24h

.5.notsustainburningorcontinuemeltingafterbeingtotallyenvelopedinafireforaperiodof2s

.SelfignitinglightsrequiredbyregulationIII/7.1.3shall:

.1.besuchthattheycannotbeextinguishedbywater

.2.beofwhitecolourandcapableofeitherburningcontinuouslywithaluminousintensityofnotlessthan2cdinalldirections
oftheupperhemisphereorflashing(dischargeflashing)atarateofnotlessthan50flashesandnotmorethan70flashespermin
withatleastthecorrespondingeffectiveluminousintensity

.3.beprovidedwithasourceofenergycapableofmeetingtherequirementofparagraph2.1.2.2foraperiodofatleast2h

2.1.3Lifebuoyselfactivatingsmokesignals
.SelfactivatingsmokesignalsrequiredbyregulationIII/7.1.3shall:

2.2Lifejackets
2.2.1Generalrequirementsforlifejackets
2.2.1.1.Alifejacketshallnotsustainburningorcontinuemeltingafterbeingtotallyenvelopedinafireforaperiodof2s.

2.2.1.2.Lifejacketsshallbeprovidedinthreesizesinaccordancewithtable2.1.Ifalifejacketfullycomplieswiththerequirements
oftwoadjacentsizeranges,itmaybemarkedwithbothsizeranges,butthespecifiedrangesshallnotbedivided.Lifejacketsshall
bemarkedbyeitherweightorheight,orbybothweightandheight,accordingtotable2.1.

2.2.1.4.Theinwaterperformanceofalifejacketshallbeevaluatedbycomparisontotheperformanceofasuitablesizestandard
referencelifejacket,i.e.referencetestdevice(RTD)complyingwiththerecommendationsoftheOrganization.seefootnote

2.2.1.5.Anadultlifejacketshallbesoconstructedthat:

.1.atleast75%ofpersonswhoarecompletelyunfamiliarwiththelifejacketcancorrectlydonitwithinaperiodof1minwithout
assistance,guidanceorpriordemonstration

.2.afterdemonstration,allpersonscancorrectlydonitwithinaperiodof1minwithoutassistance

.3.itisclearlycapableofbeingworninonlyonewayorinsideoutand,ifdonnedincorrectly,itisnotinjurioustothewearer

.4.themethodofsecuringthelifejackettothewearerhasquickandpositivemeansofclosurethatdonotrequiretyingof
knots

.5.itiscomfortabletowearand

.6.itallowsthewearertojumpintothewaterfromaheightofatleast4.5mwhileholdingontothelifejacket,andfromaheight
ofatleast1mwitharmsheldoverhead,withoutinjuryandwithoutdislodgingordamagingthelifejacketoritsattachments.

2.2.1.6.WhentestedaccordingtotherecommendationsoftheOrganizationonatleast12persons,adultlifejacketsshallhave
sufficientbuoyancyandstabilityincalmfreshwaterto:

.1.liftthemouthofexhaustedorunconsciouspersonsbyanaverageheightofnotlessthantheaverageprovidedbytheadult

.2.turnthebodyofunconscious,facedownpersonsinthewatertoapositionwherethemouthisclearofthewaterinan
averagetimenotexceedingthatoftheRTD,withthenumberofpersonsnotturnedbythelifejacketnogreaterthanthatofthe
RTD

.3.inclinethebodybackwardsfromtheverticalpositionforanaveragetorsoangleofnotlessthanthatoftheRTDminus5

.4.lifttheheadabovehorizontalforanaveragefaceplaneangleofnotlessthanthatoftheRTDminus5and

2.2.1.7.Anadultlifejacketshallallowthepersonwearingittoswimashortdistanceandtoboardasurvivalcraft.

2.2.1.8.Aninfantorchildlifejacketshallperformthesameasanadultlifejacketexceptasfollows:

.1.donningassistanceispermittedforsmallchildrenandinfants
.2.theappropriatechildorinfantRTDshallbeusedinplaceoftheadultRTDand

.3.assistancemaybegiventoboardasurvivalcraft,butwearermobilityshallnotbereducedtoanygreaterextentthanbythe
appropriatesizeRTD.

2.2.1.9.Withtheexceptionoffreeboardandselfrightingperformance,therequirementsforinfantlifejacketsmayberelaxed,if
necessary,inorderto:

.1.facilitatetherescueoftheinfantbyacaretaker

.2.allowtheinfanttobefastenedtoacaretakerandcontributetokeepingtheinfantclosetothecaretaker

.3.keeptheinfantdry,withfreerespiratorypassages

.4.protecttheinfantagainstbumpsandjoltsduringevacuationand

.5.allowacaretakertomonitorandcontrolheatlossbytheinfant.

2.2.1.10.Inadditiontothemarkingsrequiredbyparagraph1.2.2.9,aninfantorchildlifejacketshallbemarkedwith:

.1.thesizerangeinaccordancewithparagraph2.2.1.2and

.2.aninfantorchildsymbolasshownintheinfantslifejacketorchildslifejacketsymboladoptedbytheOrganization.

2.2.1.11.Alifejacketshallhavebuoyancywhichisnotreducedbymorethan5%after24hsubmersioninfreshwater.

2.2.1.12.Thebuoyancyofalifejacketshallnotdependontheuseofloosegranulatedmaterials.

2.2.1.13.Eachlifejacketshallbeprovidedwithmeansofsecuringalifejacketlightasspecifiedinparagraph2.2.3suchthatitshall
becapableofcomplyingwithparagraphs2.2.1.5.6and2.2.3.1.3.

2.2.1.14.Eachlifejacketshallbefittedwithawhistlefirmlysecuredbyalanyard.

2.2.1.15.Lifejacketlightsandwhistlesshallbeselectedandsecuredtothelifejacketinsuchawaythattheirperformancein
combinationisnotdegraded.

2.2.1.16.Alifejacketshallbeprovidedwithareleasablebuoyantlineorothermeanstosecureittoalifejacketwornbyanother
personinthewater.

2.2.1.17.Alifejacketshallbeprovidedwithasuitablemeanstoallowarescuertoliftthewearerfromthewaterintoasurvivalcraft
orrescueboat.

2.2.2Inflatablelifejackets
.Alifejacketwhichdependsoninflationforbuoyancyshallhavenotlessthantwoseparatecompartments,shallcomplywiththe
requirementsofparagraph2.2.1andshall:

.1.inflateautomaticallyuponimmersion,beprovidedwithadevicetopermitinflationbyasinglemanualmotionandbe
capableofhavingeachchamberinflatedbymouth

.2.intheeventoflossofbuoyancyinanyonecompartmentbecapableofcomplyingwiththerequirementsofparagraphs
2.2.1.5,2.2.1.6and2.2.1.7and

.3.complywiththerequirementsofparagraph2.2.1.11afterinflationbymeansoftheautomaticmechanism.

2.2.3Lifejacketlights
2.2.3.1.Eachlifejacketlightshall:

.1.havealuminousintensityofnotlessthan0.75cdinalldirectionsoftheupperhemisphere

.2.haveasourceofenergycapableofprovidingaluminousintensityof0.75cdforaperiodofatleast8h

.3.bevisibleoverasgreatasegmentoftheupperhemisphereasispracticablewhenattachedtoalifejacketand

.4.beofwhitecolour.

2.2.3.2.Ifthelightreferredtoinparagraph2.2.3.1isaflashinglight,itshall,inaddition:

2.3.1.5.Animmersionsuitwhichhasbuoyancyandisdesignedtobewornwithoutalifejacketshallbeprovidedwithareleasable
buoyantlineorothermeanstosecureittoasuitwornbyanotherpersoninthewater.

2.3.1.6.Animmersionsuitwhichhasbuoyancyandisdesignedtobewornwithoutalifejacketshallbeprovidedwithasuitable
meanstoallowarescuertoliftthewearerfromthewaterintoasurvivalcraftorrescueboat.

2.3.1.7.Ifanimmersionsuitistobeworninconjunctionwithalifejacket,thelifejacketshallbewornovertheimmersionsuit.
Personswearingsuchanimmersionsuitshallbeabletodonalifejacketwithoutassistance.Theimmersionsuitshallbemarked
toindicatethatitmustbeworninconjunctionwithacompatiblelifejacket.

2.3.1.8.Animmersionsuitshallhavebuoyancywhichisnotreducedbymorethan5%after24hsubmersioninfreshwaterand
doesnotdependontheuseofloosegranulatedmaterials.

2.3.2Thermalperformancerequirementsforimmersionsuits
2.3.2.1.Animmersionsuitmadeofmaterialwhichhasnoinherentinsulationshallbe:

.1.markedwithinstructionsthatitmustbeworninconjunctionwithwarmclothingand

.2.soconstructedthat,whenworninconjunctionwithwarmclothing,andwithalifejacketiftheimmersionsuitistobeworn
withalifejacket,theimmersionsuitcontinuestoprovidesufficientthermalprotection,followingonejumpbythewearerintothe
waterfromaheightof4.5m,toensurethatwhenitiswornforaperiodof1hincalmcirculatingwateratatemperatureof5C,the
wearersbodycoretemperaturedoesnotfallmorethan2C.

2.3.2.2.Animmersionsuitmadeofmaterialwithinherentinsulation,whenworneitheronitsownorwithalifejacket,ifthe
immersionsuitistobeworninconjunctionwithalifejacket,shallprovidethewearerwithsufficientthermalinsulation,following
onejumpintothewaterfromaheightof4.5m,toensurethatthewearersbodycoretemperaturedoesnotfallmorethan2Cafter
aperiodof6himmersionincalmcirculatingwateratatemperatureofbetween0Cand2C.

2.4.1Generalrequirementsforantiexposuresuits
2.4.1.1.Anantiexposuresuitshallbeconstructedwithwaterproofmaterialssuchthatit:

.1.providesinherentbuoyancyofatleast70N

.2.ismadeofmaterialwhichreducestheriskofheatstressduringrescueandevacuationoperations

.3.coversthewholebodyexcept,wheretheAdministrationsopermits,thefeetcoveringforthehandsandheadmaybe
providedbyseparateglovesandahood,bothofwhichshallbepermanentlyattachedtothesuit

.4.canbeunpackedanddonnedwithoutassistancewithin2min

capableofcomplyingwithparagraphs2.2.3.1.3and2.4.1.2.2,andthewhistleprescribedbyparagraph2.2.1.14.

2.4.2Thermalperformancerequirementsforantiexposuresuits
2.4.2.1.Anantiexposuresuitsshall:

.1.ifmadeofmaterialwhichhasnoinherentinsulation,bemarkedwithinstructionsthatitmustbeworninconjunctionwith
warmclothing

.2.besoconstructedthat,whenwornasmarkedandfollowingonejumpintothewaterwhichtotallysubmergesthewearer,
thesuitcontinuestoprovidesufficientthermalprotectiontoensurethatwhenitiswornincalmcirculatingwateratatemperature
of5C,thewearersbodycoretemperaturedoesnotfallatarateofmorethan1.5Cperhour,afterthefirst0.5h.

2.4.3Stabilityrequirements
.Apersoninfreshwaterwearinganantiexposuresuitscomplyingwiththerequirementsofthissectionshallbeabletoturnfrom
afacedowntoafaceuppositioninnotmorethan5sandshallbestablefaceup.Thesuitshallhavenotendencytoturnthe
wearerfacedowninmoderateseacondition.

2.5Thermalprotectiveaids

2.5Thermalprotectiveaids
2.5.1.Athermalprotectiveaidshallbemadeofwaterproofmaterialhavingathermalconductanceofnotmorethan7800W/(m2 K)
andshallbesoconstructedthat,whenusedtoencloseaperson,itshallreduceboththeconvectiveandevaporativeheatloss
fromthewearersbody.

2.5.2.Thethermalprotectiveaidshall:

.1.coverthewholebodyofpersonsofallsizeswearingalifejacketwiththeexceptionoftheface.Handsshallalsobecovered
unlesspermanentlyattachedglovesareprovided

.2.becapableofbeingunpackedandeasilydonnedwithoutassistanceinasurvivalcraftorrescueboatand

.3.permitthewearertoremoveitinthewaterinnotmorethan2min,ifitimpairsabilitytoswim.

2.5.3.Thethermalprotectiveaidshallfunctionproperlythroughoutanairtemperaturerange30Cto+20C.

4.1Generalrequirementsforliferafts
4.1.1Constructionofliferafts
4.1.1.1.Everyliferaftshallbesoconstructedastobecapableofwithstandingexposurefor30daysafloatinallseaconditions.

4.1.1.2.Theliferaftshallbesoconstructedthatwhenitisdroppedintothewaterfromaheightof18m,theliferaftandits
equipmentwilloperatesatisfactorily.Iftheliferaftistobestowedataheightofmorethan18mabovethewaterlineinthelightest
seagoingcondition,itshallbeofatypewhichhasbeensatisfactorilydroptestedfromatleastthatheight.

4.1.1.3.Thefloatingliferaftshallbecapableofwithstandingrepeatedjumpsontoitfromaheightofatleast4.5maboveitsfloor
bothwithandwithoutthecanopyerected.

4.1.2.2.Unlesstheliferaftistobelaunchedbyanapprovedlaunchingappliancecomplyingwiththerequirementsofsection6.1or
isnotintendedforeasysidetosidetransfer,thetotalmassoftheliferaft,itscontaineranditsequipmentshallnotbemorethan
185kg.

4.1.3Liferaftfittings
4.1.3.1.Lifelinesshallbesecurelybecketedaroundtheinsideandoutsideoftheliferaft.

4.1.3.2.Theliferaftshallbefittedwithanefficientpainterorlengthequaltonotlessthan10mplusthedistancefromthestowed
positiontothewaterlineinthelightestseagoingconditionor15mwhicheveristhegreater.Thebreakingstrengthofthepainter

4.2Inflatableliferafts
4.2.1.Inflatableliferaftsshallcomplywiththerequirementsofsection4.1and,inaddition,shallcomplywiththerequirementsof
thissection.

4.2.2Constructionofinflatableliferafts
4.2.2.1.Themainbuoyancychambershallbedividedintonotlessthantwoseparatecompartments,eachinflatedthrougha
nonreturninflationvalveoneachcompartment.Thebuoyancychambersshallbesoarrangedthat,intheeventofanyoneofthe
compartmentsbeingdamagedorfailingtoinflate,theintactcompartmentsshallbeabletosupport,withpositivefreeboardover
theliferaftsentireperiphery,thenumberofpersonswhichtheliferaftispermittedtoaccommodateeachhavingamassof82.5kg

kneelingandnotholdingontoanyotherpartoftheliferaft,toenablepersonstoboardtheliferaftfromthesea.Theboardingramp
shallbesoarrangedastopreventsignificantdeflationoftheliferaftiftherampisdamaged.Inthecaseofadavitlaunchedliferaft
havingmorethanoneentrance,theboardingrampshallbefittedattheentranceoppositethebowsinglinesandembarkation
facilities.

4.2.4.2.Entrancesnotprovidedwithaboardingrampshallhaveaboardingladder,theloweststepofwhichshallbesituatednot
lessthan0.4mbelowtheliferaftslightwaterline.
4.2.4.3.Thereshallbemeansinsidetheliferafttoassistpersonstopullthemselvesintotheliferaftfromtheladder.

4.2.5Stabilityofinflatableliferafts
4.2.5.1.Everyinflatableliferaftshallbesoconstructedthat,whenfullyinflatedandfloatingwiththecanopyuppermost,itisstable
inaseaway.

4.2.5.2.Thestabilityoftheliferaftwhenintheinvertedpositionshallbesuchthatitcanberightedinaseawayandincalmwater
byoneperson.

4.4.1Constructionoflifeboats
4.4.1.1.Alllifeboatsshallbeproperlyconstructedandshallbeorsuchformandproportionsthattheyhaveamplestabilityina
seawayandsufficientfreeboardwhenloadedwiththeirfullcomplementofpersonsandequipment,andarecapableofbeing
safelylaunchedunderallconditionsoftrimofupto10andlistofupto20eitherway.Alllifeboatsshallhaverigidhullsandshall
becapableofmaintainingpositivestabilitywheninanuprightpositionincalmwaterandloadedwiththeirfullcomplementof

4.4.4Lifeboatbuoyancy

4.4.5Lifeboatfreeboardandstability
4.4.5.1.AlllifeboatsshallbestableandhaveapositiveGMvaluewhenloadedwith50%orthenumberofpersonsthelifeboatis
permittedtoaccommodateintheirnormalpositionstoonesideofthecentreline.

4.4.5.2.Undertheconditionofloadinginparagraph4.4.5.1:

.1.eachlifeboatwithsideopeningsnearthegunwaleshallhaveafreeboard,measuredfromthewaterlinetothelowest
openingthroughwhichthelifeboatmaybecomeflooded,ofatleast1.5%ofthelifeboatslengthor100mmwhicheverisgreater

4.4.6.2.Theengineshallbeprovidedwitheitheramanualstartingsystem,orapowerstartingsystemwithtwoindependent
rechargeableenergysources.Anynecessarystartingaidsshallalsobeprovided.Theenginestartingsystemsandstartingaids
shallstarttheengineatanambienttemperatureof15Cwithin2minofcommencingthestartprocedureunless,intheopinionof
theAdministrationhavingregardtotheparticularvoyagesinwhichtheshipcarryingthelifeboatisconstantlyengaged,adifferent
temperatureisappropriate.Thestartingsystemsshallnotbeimpededbytheenginecasing,seatingorotherobstructions.

4.4.6.3.Theengineshallbecapableofoperatingfornotlessthan5minafterstartingfromcoldwiththelifeboatoutofthewater.

4.4.6.4.Theengineshallbecapableofoperatingwhenthelifeboatisfloodeduptothecentrelineofthecrankshaft.

4.4.6.5.Thepropellershaftingshallbesoarrangedthatthepropellercanbedisengagedfromtheengine.Provisionshallbe
madeforaheadandasternpropulsionofthelifeboat.

4.4.6.6.Theexhaustpipeshallbesoarrangedastopreventwaterfromenteringtheengineinnormaloperation.

4.4.6.7.Alllifeboatsshallbedesignedwithdueregardtothesafetyofpersonsinthewaterandtothepossibilityofdamagetothe
propulsionsystembyfloatingdebris.

4.4.6.8.Thespeedofalifeboatwhenproceedingaheadincalmwater,whenloadedwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsand
equipmentandwithallenginepoweredauxiliaryequipmentinoperation,shallbeatleast6knotsandatleast2knotswhen
towingthelargestliferaftcarriedontheshiploadedwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipmentoritsequivalent.Sufficient
fuel,suitableforusethroughoutthetemperaturerangeexpectedintheareainwhichtheshipoperates,shallbeprovidedtorun
thefullyloadedlifeboatat6knotsforaperiodofnotlessthan24h.

4.4.6.9.Thelifeboatenginetransmission,andengineaccessoriesshallbeenclosedinafireretardantcasingorothersuitable
arrangementsprovidingsimilarprotection.Sucharrangementsshallalsoprotectpersonsfromcomingintoaccidentalcontactwith
hotormovingpartsandprotecttheenginefromexposuretoweatherandsea.Adequatemeansshallbeprovidedtoreducethe
enginenoisesothatashoutedordercanbeheard.Starterbatteriesshallbeprovidedwithcasingswhichformawatertight
enclosurearoundthebottomandsidesofthebatteries.Thebatterycasingsshallhaveatightfittingtopwhichprovidesfor
necessarygasventing.

4.4.6.10.Thelifeboatengineandaccessoriesshallbedesignedtolimitelectromagneticemissionssothatengineoperationdoes
notinterferewiththeoperationofradiolifesavingappliancesusedinthelifeboat.

4.4.6.11.Meansshallbeprovidedforrechargingallenginestarting,radioandsearchlightbatteries.Radiobatteriesshallnotbe
usedtoprovidepowerforenginestarting.Meansshallbeprovidedforrecharginglifeboatbatteriesfromtheshipspowersupply
atasupplyvoltagenotexceeding50seefootnoteVwhichcanbedisconnectedatthelifeboatembarkationstation,orbymeansof
asolarbatterycharger.

4.4.6.12.Waterresistantinstructionsforstartingandoperatingtheengineshallbeprovidedandmountedinaconspicuousplace
neartheenginestartingcontrols.

4.4.7Lifeboatfittings
4.4.7.1.Alllifeboatsexceptfreefalllifeboatsshallbeprovidedwithatleastonedrainvalvefittednearthelowestpointinthehull,
whichshallautomaticallyopentodrainwaterfromthehullwhenthelifeboatisnotwaterborneandshallautomaticallycloseto
prevententryofwaterwhenthelifeboatiswaterborne.Eachdrainvalveshallbeprovidedwithacaporplugtoclosethevalve,
whichshallbeattachedtothelifeboatbyalanyard,achain,orothersuitablemeans.Drainvalvesshallbereadilyaccessiblefrom
insidethelifeboatandtheirpositionshallbeclearlyindicated.

4.4.7.2.Alllifeboatsshallbeprovidedwitharudderandtiller.Whenawheelorotherremotesteeringmechanismisalsoprovided
thetillershallbecapableofcontrollingtherudderincaseoffailureofthesteeringmechanism.Theruddershallbepermanently
attachedtothelifeboat.Thetillershallbepermanentlyinstalledon,orlinkedto,therudderstock:however,ifthelifeboathasa
remotesteeringmechanism,thetillermayberemovableandsecurelystowedneartherudderstock.Therudderandtillershallbe
soarrangedasnottobedamagedbyoperationofthereleasemechanismorthepropeller.

4.4.7.3.Exceptinthevicinityoftherudderandpropeller,suitablehandholdsshallbeprovidedorabuoyantlifelineshallbe
becketedaroundtheoutsideofthelifeboatabovethewaterlineandwithinreachofapersoninthewater.

4.4.7.4.Lifeboatswhicharenotselfrightingwhencapsizedshallhavesuitablehandholdsontheundersideofthehulltoenable
personstoclingtothelifeboat.Thehandholdsshallbefastenedtothelifeboatinsuchawaythat,whensubjectedtoanimpact
sufficienttocausethemtobreakawayfromthelifeboat,theybreakawaywithoutdamagingthelifeboat.

4.4.7.5.Alllifeboatsshallbefittedwithsufficientwatertightlockersorcompartmentstoprovideforthestorageofthesmallitemsof
equipment,waterandprovisionsrequiredbyparagraph4.4.8.Thelifeboatshallbeequippedwithameansforcollectingrain
water,andinadditionifrequiredbytheAdministrationameansforproducingdrinkingwaterfromseawaterwithamanually
powereddesalinator.Thedesalinatormustnotbedependentuponsolarheat,noronchemicalsotherthanseawater.Meansshall
beprovidedforthestorageofcollectedwater.

4.4.7.6.Everylifeboattobelaunchedbyafallorfalls,exceptafreefalllifeboat,shallbefittedwithareleasemechanism
complyingwiththefollowingrequirementssubjecttosubparagraph.17below:

.1.themechanismshallbesoarrangedthatallhooksarereleasedsimultaneously

4.4.7.9.Lifeboatsintendedforlaunchingdownthesideofashipshallhaveskatesandfendersasnecessarytofacilitate
launchingandpreventdamagetothelifeboat.

4.4.7.10.Amanuallycontrolledexteriorlightshallbefitted.Thelightshallbewhiteandbecapableofoperatingcontinuouslyforat
least12hwithaluminousintensityofnotlessthan4.3cdinalldirectionsoftheupperhemisphere.However,ifthelightisa
flashinglightitshallflashatarateofnotlessthan50flashesandnotmorethan70flashesperminforthe12hoperatingperiod

4.4.8Lifeboatequipment
.Allitemsoflifeboatequipment,whetherrequiredbythisparagraphorelsewhereinsection4.4,shallbesecuredwithinthe
lifeboatbylashings,storageinlockersorcompartments,storageinbracketsorsimilarmountingarrangementsorothersuitable
means.However,inthecaseofalifeboattobelaunchedbyfallstheboathooksshallbekeptfreeforfendingoffpurposes.The
equipmentshallbesecuredinsuchamannerasnottointerferewithanyabandonmentprocedures.Allitemsoflifeboat
equipmentshallbeassmallandofaslittlemassaspossibleandshallbepackedinasuitableandcompactform.Exceptwhere

4.6.3.2.Thestabilityofthelifeboatshallbesuchthatitisinherentlyorautomaticallyselfrightingwhenloadedwithitsfullora
partialcomplementofpersonsandequipmentandallentrancesandopeningsareclosedwatertightandthepersonsaresecured
withsafetybelts.
4.6.3.3.Thelifeboatshallbecapableofsupportingitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipmentwhenthelifeboatisinthe
damagedconditionprescribedinparagraph4.4.1.1anditsstabilityshallbesuchthatintheeventofcapsizing,itwillautomatically

4.7.2.1.Thecarryingcapacityofafreefalllifeboatisthenumberofpersonshavinganaveragemassof82.5kgthatcanbe
providedwithaseatwithoutinterferingwiththemeansofpropulsionortheoperationofanyofthelifeboatsequipment.The
seatingsurfaceshallbesmoothandshapedandprovidedwithcushioningofatleast10mmoverallcontactareastoprovide

5.1Rescueboats
5.1.1Generalrequirements
5.1.1.1.Exceptasprovidedbythissection,allrescueboatsshallcomplywiththerequirementsofparagraphs4.4.1to4.4.7.4
inclusive,excludingparagraph4.4.6.8,and4.4.7.6,4.4.7.8,4.4.7.10,4.4.7.11and4.4.9,exceptthat,forallrescueboats,an
averagemassof82.5kgshallapplytoparagraph4.4.2.2.1.Alifeboatmaybeapprovedandusedasarescueboatifitmeetsallof
therequirementsofthissection,ifitsuccessfullycompletesthetestingforarescueboatrequiredinregulationIII/4.2,andifits
stowage,launchingandrecoveryarrangementsontheshipmeetalloftherequirementsforarescueboat.

5.1.1.2.Notwithstandingtherequirementsofparagraph4.4.4requiredbuoyantmaterialforrescueboatsmaybeinstalledexternal
tothehull,provideditisadequatelyprotectedagainstdamageandiscapableofwithstandingexposureasspecifiedinparagraph
5.1.3.3.

5.1.1.3.Rescueboatsmaybeeitherofrigidorinflatedconstructionoracombinationofbothandshall:

.1.benotlessthan3.8mandnotmorethan8.5minlengthand

.2.becapableofcarryingatleastfiveseatedpersonsandapersonlyingonastretcherallwearingimmersionsuits,and
lifejacketsifrequired.Notwithstandingparagraph4.4.1.5,seating,exceptforthehelmsman,maybeprovidedonthefloor,
providedthattheseatingspaceanalysisinaccordancewithparagraph4.4.2.2.2usesshapessimilartofigure1,butalteredtoan
overalllengthof1190mmtoprovideforextendedlegs.Nopartofaseatingspaceshallbeonthegunwale,transom,oroninflated
buoyancyatthesidesoftheboat.

5.1.1.4.Rescueboatswhichareacombinationofrigidandinflatedconstructionshallcomplywiththeappropriaterequirementsof
thissectiontothesatisfactionoftheAdministration.

5.1.1.5.Unlesstherescueboathasadequatesheer,itshallbeprovidedwithabowcoverextendingfornotlessthan15%ofits
length.

5.1.1.6.Everyrescueboatshallbeprovidedwithsufficientfuel,suitableforusethroughoutthetemperaturerangeexpectedinthe
areainwhichtheshipoperates,andbecapableofmanoeuvringataspeedofatleast6knotsandmaintainingthatspeed,fora
periodofatleast4h,whenloadedwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipment.

5.1.1.7.Rescueboatsshallhavesufficientmobilityandmanoeuvrabilityinaseawaytoenablepersonstoberetrievedfromthe
water,marshalliferaftsandtowthelargestliferaftcarriedontheshipwhenloadedwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsand
equipmentoritsequivalentataspeedofatleast2knots.

5.1.1.8.Arescueboatshallbefittedwithaninboardengineoroutboardmotor.Ifitisfittedwithanoutboardmotor,therudderand
tillermayformpartoftheengine.Notwithstandingtherequirementsofparagraph4.4.6.1,petroldrivenoutboardengineswithan
approvedfuelsystemmaybefittedinrescueboatsprovidedthefueltanksarespeciallyprotectedagainstfireandexplosion.

5.1.1.9.Arrangementsfortowingshallbepermanentlyfittedinrescueboatsandshallbesufficientlystrongtomarshalortow
liferaftsasrequiredbyparagraph5.1.1.7.

5.1.1.10.Unlessexpresslyprovidedotherwise,everyrescueboatshallbeprovidedwitheffectivemeansofbailingorbe
automaticallyselfbailing.

5.1.1.11.Rescueboatsshallbefittedwithweathertightstowageforsmallitemsofequipment.

5.1.1.12.Everyrescueboatshallbesoarrangedthatanadequateviewforward,aftandtobothsidesisprovidedfromthecontrol
andsteeringpositionforsafelaunchingandmanoeuvringand,inparticular,withregardtovisibilityofareasandcrewmembers
essentialtomanoverboardretrievalandmarshallingofsurvivalcraft.

5.1.2Rescueboatequipment
5.1.2.1.Allitemsofrescueboatequipment,withtheexceptionofboathookswhichshallbekeptfreeforfendingoffpurposes,
shallbesecuredwithintherescueboatbylashings,storageinlockersorcompartments,storageinbracketsorsimilarmounting
arrangements,orothersuitablemeans.Theequipmentshallbesecuredinsuchamannerasnottointerferewithanylaunching
orrecoveryprocedures.Allitemsofrescueboatequipmentshallbeassmallandofaslittlemassaspossibleandshallbepacked
insuitableandcompactform.

5.1.2.2.Thenormalequipmentofeveryrescueboatshallconsistof:

.1.sufficientbuoyantoarsorpaddlestomakeheadwayincalmseas.Tholepins,crutchesorequivalentarrangementsshallbe
providedforeachoar.Tholepinsorcrutchesshallbeattachedtotheboatbylanyardsorchains

.2.abuoyantbailer

.3.abinnaclecontaininganefficientcompasswhichisluminousorprovidedwithsuitablemeansofillumination

.4.aseaanchorandtrippinglineorfittedwithahawserofadequatestrengthnotlessthan10minlength
.5.apainterofsufficientlengthandstrength,attachedtothereleasedevicecomplyingwiththerequirementsofparagraph
4.4.7.7andplacedattheforwardendoftherescueboat

.6.onebuoyantline,notlessthan50minlength,ofsufficientstrengthtotowaliferaftasrequiredbyparagraph5.1.1.7

.7.onewaterproofelectrictorchsuitableforMorsesignalling,togetherwithonesparesetofbatteriesandonesparebulbina
waterproofcontainer

.8.onewhistleorequivalentsoundsignal

.9.afirstaidoutfitinawaterproofcasecapableofbeingclosedtightlyafteruse

5.1.2.3.Inadditiontotheequipmentrequiredbyparagraph5.1.2.2,thenormalequipmentofeveryrigidrescueboatshallinclude:

.3.aknifeorhatchet.

5.1.2.4.Inadditiontotheequipmentrequiredbyparagraph5.1.2.2thenormalequipmentforeveryinflatedrescueboatshall
consistof:

.1.abuoyantsafetyknife

.2.twosponges

.3.anefficientmanuallyoperatedbellowsorpump

.4.arepairkitinasuitablecontainerforrepairingpuncturesand

.5.asafetyboathook.

5.1.3Additionalrequirementsforinflatedrescueboats
5.1.3.1.Therequirementsofparagraph4.4.1.4and4.4.1.6donotapplytoinflatedrescueboats.

5.1.3.2.Aninflatedrescueboatshallbeconstructedinsuchawaythat,whensuspendedbyitsbridleorliftinghook:

.1.itisofsufficientstrengthandrigiditytoenableittobeloweredandrecoveredwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsand
equipment

.2.itisofsufficientstrengthtowithstandaloadof4timesthemassofitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipmentatan
ambienttemperatureof203C,withallreliefvalvesinoperativeand

.3.itisofsufficientstrengthtowithstandaloadof1.1timesthemassofitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipmentatan
ambienttemperatureof30C,withallreliefvalvesoperative.

5.1.3.3.Inflatedrescueboatsshallbesoconstructedastobecapableofwithstandingexposure:

.1.whenstowedonanopendeckonashipatsea

.2.for30daysafloatinallseaconditions.

5.1.3.4.Inadditiontocomplyingwiththerequirementsofparagraph4.4.9,inflatedrescueboatsshallbemarkedwithaserial
number,themakersnameortrademarkandthedateofmanufacture.

5.1.3.5.Thebuoyancyofaninflatedrescueboatshallbeprovidedbyeitherasingletubesubdividedintoatleastfiveseparate
compartmentsofapproximatelyequalvolumeortwoseparatetubesneitherexceeding60%ofthetotalvolume.Thebuoyancy
tubesshallbesoarrangedthattheintactcompartmentsshallbeabletosupportthenumberofpersonswhichtherescueboatis
permittedtoaccommodate,eachhavingamassof82.5kg,whenseatedintheirnormalpositionswithpositivefreeboardoverthe
rescueboatsentireperipheryunderthefollowingconditions:

.1.withtheforwardbuoyancycompartmentdeflated

.2.withtheentirebuoyancyononesideoftherescueboatdeflatedand
.3.withtheentirebuoyancyononesideandthebowcompartmentdeflated.

5.1.3.6.Thebuoyancytubesformingtheboundaryoftheinflatedrescueboatshalloninflationprovideavolumeofnotlessthan
0.17m3 foreachpersontherescueboatispermittedtoaccommodate.

5.1.3.7.Eachbuoyancycompartmentshallbefittedwithanonreturnvalveformanualinflationandmeansfordeflation.Asafety
reliefvalveshallalsobefittedunlesstheAdministrationissatisfiedthatsuchanapplianceisunnecessary.

5.1.3.8.Underneaththebottomandonvulnerableplacesontheoutsideoftheinflatedrescueboat,rubbingstripsshallbe
providedtothesatisfactionoftheAdministration.

5.1.3.9.Whereatransomisfitteditshallnotbeinsetbymorethan20%oftheoveralllengthoftherescueboat.

5.1.3.10.Suitablepatchesshallbeprovidedforsecuringthepaintersforeandaftandthebecketedlifelinesinsideandoutsidethe
boat.

5.1.4Additionalrequirementsforfastrescueboats
5.1.4.1.Fastrescueboatsshallbesoconstructedastocapableofbeingsafelylaunchedandretrievedunderadverseweather
andseaconditions.

5.1.4.2.Exceptasprovidedbythissection,allfastrescueboatsshallcomplywiththerequirementsofsection5.1,exceptfor
paragraphs4.4.1.5.3,4.4.1.6,4.4.7.2,5.1.1.6and5.1.1.10.

5.1.4.3.Notwithstandingparagraph5.1.1.3.1,fastrescueboatsshallhaveahulllengthofnotlessthan6mandnotmorethan8.5
m,includinginflatedstructuresorfixedfenders.

5.1.4.4.Fastrescueboatsshallbeprovidedwithsufficientfuel,suitableforusethroughoutthetemperaturerangeexpectedinthe
areainwhichtheshipoperates,andbecapableofmanoeuvring,foraperiodofatleast4h,ataspeedofatleast20knotsincalm
waterwithacrewof3personsandatleast8knotswhenloadedwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipment.

5.1.4.5.Fastrescueboatsshallbeselfrightingorcapableofbeingreadilyrightedbynotmorethantwooftheircrew.

5.1.4.6.Fastrescueboatsshallbeselfbailingorbecapableofbeingrapidlyclearedofwater.

5.1.4.7.Fastrescueboatsshallbesteeredbyawheelatthehelmsmanspositionremotefromthetiller.Anemergencysteering
systemprovidingdirectcontroloftherudder,waterjet,oroutboardmotorshallalsobeprovided.

5.1.4.8.Enginesinfastrescueboatsshallstopautomaticallyorbestoppedbythehelmsmansemergencyreleaseswitch,should
therescueboatcapsize.Whentherescueboathasrighted,eachengineormotorshallbecapableofbeingrestartedprovided
thatthehelmsmansemergencyrelease,iffitted,hasbeenreset.Thedesignofthefuelandlubricatingsystemsshallpreventthe
lossofmorethan250mloffuelorlubricatingoilfromthepropulsionsystem,shouldtherescueboatcapsize.

5.1.4.9.Fastrescueboatsshall,ifpossible,beequippedwithaneasilyandsafelyoperatedfixedsinglepointsuspension
arrangementorequivalent.

5.1.4.10.Arigidfastrescueboatshallbeconstructedinsuchawaythat,whensuspendedbyitsliftingpoint,itisofsufficient
strengthtowithstandaloadof4timesthemassofitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipmentwithoutresidualdeflectionupon
removaloftheload.

5.1.4.11.ThenormalequipmentofafastrescueboatshallincludeaVHFradiocommunicationsetwhichishandsfreeand
watertight.

6.1.1Generalrequirements
6.1.1.1.Withtheexceptionofthesecondarymeansforlaunchingforfreefalllifeboats,eachlaunchingapplianceshallbeso
arrangedthatthefullyequippedsurvivalcraftorrescueboatitservescanbesafelyIaunchedagainstunfavourableconditionsof
trimofup10andlistofupto20eitherway:

.1.whenboarded,asrequiredbyregulationIII/23orIII/33,byitsfullcomplementofpersonsand

.2.withnotmorethantherequiredoperatingcrewonboard.

6.1.1.2.Notwithstandingtherequirementsofparagraph6.1.1.1,lifeboatlaunchingappliancesforoiltankers,chemicaltankersand
gascarrierswithafinalangleofheelgreaterthan20calculatedinaccordancewiththeInternationalConventionforthe
PreventionofPollutionfromShips,1973,asmodifiedbytheProtocolof1978relatingtheretoandtherecommendationsofthe
Organizationseefootnote,asapplicable,shallbecapableofoperatingatthefinalangleofheelonthelowersideoftheshiptaking
intoconsiderationthefinaldamagedwaterlineoftheship.

6.1.1.3.Alaunchingapplianceshallnotdependonanymeansotherthangravityorstoredmechanicalpowerwhichis
independentoftheshipspowersuppliestolaunchthesurvivalcraftorrescueboatitservesinthefullyloadedandequipped
conditionandalsointhelightcondition.

6.1.1.4.Eachlaunchingapplianceshallbesoconstructedthatonlyaminimumamountofroutinemaintenanceisnecessary.All
partsrequiringregularmaintenancebytheshipscrewshallbereadilyaccessibleandeasilymaintained.

6.1.1.5.Thelaunchingapplianceanditsattachmentsotherthanwinchbrakesshallbeofsufficientstrengthtowithstandafactory
staticproofloadtestofnotlessthan2.2timesthemaximumworkingload.

6.1.1.6.Structuralmembersandallblocks,falls,padeyes,links,fasteningsandallotherfittingsusedinconnectionwithlaunching
equipmentshallbedesignedwithafactorofsafetyonthebasisofthemaximumworkingloadassignedandtheultimatestrengths
ofthematerialsusedforconstruction.Aminimumfactorofsafetyof4.5shallbeappliedtoallstructuralmembers.andaminimum
factorofsafetyof6shallbeappliedtofalls,suspensionchains,linksandblocks.

6.1.1.7.Eachlaunchingapplianceshall.asfaraspracticable,remaineffectiveunderconditionsoficing.

6.1.1.8.Alifeboatlaunchingapplianceshallbecapableofrecoveringthelifeboatwithitscrew.

6.1.1.9.Eachrescueboatlaunchingapplianceshallbefittedwithapoweredwinchmotorcapableofraisingtherescueboatfrom
thewaterwithitsfullrescueboatcomplementofpersonsandequipmentatarateofnotlessthan0.3m/s.

6.1.1.10.Thearrangementsofthelaunchingapplianceshallbesuchastoenablesafeboardingofthesurvivalcraftin
accordancewiththerequirementsofparagraphs4.1.4.2,4.1.4.3,4.4.3.1and4.4.3.2.

6.1.1.11.Rescueboatlaunchingappliancesshallbeprovidedwithfoulweatherrecoverystropsforrecoverywhereheavyfall
blocksconstituteadanger.

6.1.2Launchingappliancesusingfallsandawinch
6.1.2.1.Everylaunchingapplianceusingfallsandawinchexceptforsecondarylaunchingappliancesforfreefalllifeboats,shall
complywiththerequirementsofparagraph6.1.1andinadditionshallcomplywiththerequirementsofthisparagraph:

6.1.2.2.Thelaunchingmechanismshallbesoarrangedthatitmaybeactuatedbyonepersonfromapositionontheshipsdeck
and,exceptforsecondarylaunchingappliancesforfreefalllifeboats,fromapositionwithinthesurvivalcraftorrescueboat.When
launchedbyapersononthedeck,thesurvivalcraftorrescueboatshallbevisibletothatperson.

6.1.2.3.Fallsshallbeofrotationresistantandcorrosionresistantsteelwirerope.

6.1.2.4.Inthecaseofamultipledrumwinch,unlessanefficientcompensatorydeviceisfitted,thefallsshallbesoarrangedasto
windoffthedrumsatthesameratewhenlowering,andtowindontothedrumsevenlyatthesameratewhenhoisting.

6.1.2.5.Thewinchbrakesofalaunchingapplianceshallbeofsufficientstrengthtowithstand:

.1.astatictestwithaproofloadofnotlessthan1.5timesthemaximumworkingloadand

.2.adynamictestwithaproofloadofnotlessthan1.1timesthemaximumworkingloadatmaximumloweringspeed.

6.1.2.6.Anefficienthandgearshallbeprovidedforrecoveryofeachsurvivalcraftandrescueboat.Handgearhandlesorwheels
shallnotberotatedbymovingpartsofthewinchwhenthesurvivalcraftorrescueboatisbeingloweredorwhenitisbeing
hoistedbypower.

6.1.2.7.Wheredavitarmsarerecoveredbypower,safetydevicesshallbefittedwhichwillautomaticallycutoffthepowerbefore
thedavitarmsreachthestopsinordertopreventoverstressingthefallsordavits,unlessthemotorisdesignedtopreventsuch
overstressing.

6.1.2.8.Thespeedatwhichthefullyloadedsurvivalcraftorrescueboatisloweredtothewatershallnotbelessthanthat
obtainedfromtheformula:

.whereSistheloweringspeedinmetrespersecondandHistheheightinmetresfromthedavitheadtothewaterlinewiththe
shipatthelightestseagoingcondition.

6.1.2.9.TheloweringspeedofafullyequippedliferaftwithoutpersonsonboardshallbetothesatisfactionoftheAdministration.
Theloweringspeedofothersurvivalcraft,fullyequippedbutwithoutpersonsonboard,shallbeatleast70%,ofthatrequiredby
paragraph6.1.2.8.

6.1.2.10.ThemaximumloweringspeedshallbeestablishedbytheAdministrationhavingregardtothedesignofthesurvivalcraft
orrescueboat,theprotectionofitsoccupantsfromexcessiveforces,andthestrengthofthelaunchingarrangementstakinginto
accountinertiaforcesduringanemergencystop.Meansshallbeincorporatedintheappliancetoensurethatthisspeedisnot
exceeded.
6.1.2.11.Everylaunchingapplianceshallbefittedwithbrakescapableofstoppingthedescentofthesurvivalcraftorrescueboat
andholdingitsecurelywhenloadedwithitsfullcomplementofpersonsandequipmentbrakepadsshall,wherenecessary,be
protectedfromwaterandoil.

6.1.2.12.Manualbrakesshallbesoarrangedthatthebrakeisalwaysappliedunlesstheoperator,eitherondeckorinthesurvival
craftorrescueboat,holdsthebrakecontrolinthe"off"position.

6.1.2.13.Alifeboatlaunchingapplianceshallbeprovidedwithmeansforhangingoffthelifeboattofreetheonloadrelease
mechanismformaintenance.

6.1.3Floatfreelaunching
.Whereasurvivalcraftrequiresalaunchingapplianceandisalsodesignedtofloatfree,thefloatfreereleaseofthesurvivalcraft
fromitsstowedpositionshallbeautomatic.

6.1.4Launchingappliancesforfreefalllifeboats
6.1.4.1.Everyfreefalllaunchingapplianceshallcomplywiththeapplicablerequirementsofparagraph6.1.1and,inaddition,
shallcomplywiththerequirementsofthisparagraph.

6.1.4.2.Thelaunchingapplianceshallbedesignedandinstalledsothatitandthelifeboatitservesoperateasasystemtoprotect
theoccupantsfromharmfulaccelerationforcesasrequiredbyparagraph4.7.5,andtoensureeffectiveclearingoftheshipas
requiredbyparagraphs4.7.3.1and4.7.3.2.

6.1.4.3.Thelaunchingapplianceshallbeconstructedsoastopreventsparkingandincendiaryfrictionduringthelaunchingofthe
lifeboat.

6.1.4.4.Thelaunchingapplianceshallbedesignedandarrangedsothatinitsreadytolaunchposition,thedistancefromthe
lowestpointonthelifeboatitservestothewatersurfacewiththeshipinitslightestseagoingconditiondoesnotexceedthe
lifeboatsfreefallcertificationheight,takingintoconsiderationtherequirementsofparagraph4.7.3.

6.1.4.5.Thelaunchingapplianceshallbearrangedsoastoprecludeaccidentalreleaseofthelifeboatinitsunattendedstowed
position.Ifthemeansprovidedtosecurethelifeboatcannotbereleasedfrominsidethelifeboat,itshallbesoarrangedasto
precludeboardingthelifeboatwithoutfirstreleasingit.

6.1.4.6.Thereleasemechanismshallbearrangedsothatatleasttwoindependentactionsfrominsidethelifeboatarerequiredin
ordertolaunchthelifeboat.

6.1.4.7.Eachlaunchingapplianceshallbeprovidedwithasecondarymeanstolaunchthelifeboatbyfalls.Suchmeansshall
complywiththerequirementsofparagraph6.1.1(except6.1.1.3)andparagraph6.1.2(except6.1.2.6).Itmustbecapableof
launchingthelifeboatagainstunfavourableconditionsoftrimofuptoonly2andlistofuptoonly5eitherwayanditneednot
complywiththespeedrequirementsofparagraphs6.1.2.8and6.1.2.9.Ifthesecondarylaunchingapplianceisnotdependenton
gravity,storedmechanicalpowerorothermanualmeans,thelaunchingapplianceshallbeconnectedbothtotheshipsmainand
emergencypowersupplies.

6.1.4.8.Thesecondarymeansoflaunchingshallbeequippedwithatleastasingleoffloadcapabilitytoreleasethelifeboat.

6.1.5Liferaftlaunchingappliances
.Everyliferaftlaunchingapplianceshallcomplywiththerequirementsofparagraphs6.1.1and6.1.2,exceptwithregardto
embarkationinthestowedposition,recoveryfortheloadedliferaftandthatmanualoperationispermittedforturningoutthe
appliance.Thelaunchingapplianceshallincludeanautomaticreleasehookarrangedsoastopreventprematurereleaseduring
loweringandshallreleasetheliferaftwhenwaterborne.Thereleasehookshallincludeacapabilitytoreleasethehookunder
load.Theonloadreleasecontrolshall:

.1.beclearlydifferentiatedfromthecontrolwhichactivatestheautomaticreleasefunction

.2.requireatleasttwoseparateactionstooperate

.3.withaloadof150kgonthehook,requireaforceofatleast600andnotmorethan700Ntoreleasetheload,orprovide
equivalentadequateprotectionagainstinadvertentreleaseofthehookand

.4.bedesignedsuchthatthecrewmembersondeckcanclearlyobservewhenthereleasemechanismisproperlyand
completelyset.

6.1.6Embarkationladders
6.1.6.1.Handholdsshallbeprovidedtoensureasafepassagefromthedecktotheheadoftheladderandviceversa.

6.1.6.2.Thestepsoftheladdershallbe:

.1.madeofhardwood,freefromknotsorotherirregularities,smoothlymachinedandfreefromsharpedgesandsplinters,orof
suitablematerialofequivalentproperties
.2.providedwithanefficientnonslipsurfaceeitherbylongitudinalgroovingorbytheapplicationofanapprovednonslip
coating

6.1.7.4.Thewinchbrakeshallhaveagradualaction.Whenthefastrescueboatisloweredatfullspeedandthebrakeisapplied
sharply,theadditionaldynamicforceinducedinthewireduetoretardationshallnotexceed0.5timestheworkingloadofthe
launchingappliance.
