Socket G2, also called rPGA988B, was introduced in January 2011 as a
socket for mobile microprocessors, based on
Sandy Bridge
microarchitecture. Alongside the new CPUs, Intel launched HM65,
HM67, QM67, QS6 and UM67 6-series
mobile chipsets, compatible with
the socket. While the initial launch of socket G2 platform included only
Core-branded Socket G2 benchmarks
processors, Intel eventually released mobile Celeron and
Pentium "Sandy Bridge" models, compatible with the socket.
Socket G1
The rPGA988B
was also used for the next generation of mobile microprocessors,
codenamed "Ivy Bridge". These CPUs Socket G3
were released in April 2012, and
were paired with new 7-series chipsets, that featured partial
compatibility with older All CPU sockets
products. The 7-series chipsets supported
not only Ivy Bridge, but also Sandy Bridge mobile processors. However, due
to
changes in electrical interface of Ivy Bridge chips, they could
not be used in older motherboards, built on 6-series Link to this page
chipsets.
Sockets G1 and G2 have the same number of pin holes, but they are
not compatible with each other due to different
position of one pin
hole.
Supported processors
Although all microprocessors from the table below physically fit into the
socket, not all of them may be supported by your
motherboard. For
that reason before upgrading to any model from this list below, please
make sure that the CPU is
compatible with the motherboard. See
"Upgrading socket G2 motherboards" section further below for tips on
how to
determine which processors are supported by specific motherboard.

BIOS

In addition to all the hardware compatibilities, the specific BIOS revision level also needs to support the target CPU. I know of one case where a 6 core
CPU was supported in version 5.x but not in version 6.x. go figure
Good luck
Processors Compatibility

I would like to know something look: I have a socket (rPGA988B) and I have installed an intel celeron dual core second generation (G2) and will be
installing an i5-2520m (which is also second generation) want to later install a third generation one (i7-3610QM) third generation that also uses the
same socket the (rPGA988B)
my question is how I can put a third generation intel one second with the same sockets? I mean they both use the same socket I want to know if they
are compatible in this product also come in the same list but please debuelveme want to make sure the message with a clear answer. my gmail :
luksGen@gmail.com
Response: Officially, Intel does not support third generation processors on 6-series chipset. Some embedded i7-3xxx CPUs can work with older
chipsets, but it's not clear if they will work in laptops, built before the processors were released, or not.

Ivy bridge works with different chipset. It will not work with HM65 (Sandy bridge) chipset
type??

is this a pga?lga?amd?
Posted by: Jonas 2014-10-09 10:15:46
Yes, you can. I had I5 2450M and replaced it with i7 3632QM. Socket accepted it well. On the other hand I expected speed boost, but seems like same
old i5.

It depends on the chipset. Intel 7-series chipsets support Sandy Bridge (i7-2xxxM) and Ivy Bridge (i7-3xxxM) processors, while older chipsets don't
support Ivy Bridge CPUs.
i5-3427U

Hi there.
Got a NB with i5-3427U (17W) cpu. Cpu-z says it's socket 988B rPGA. Would like to upgrade to an i7-3687U.
Heard "U" cpus are soldered on MB, true?
Thanks.
rpga988b vs pga988b

I want to put a similar cpu that works with the same chipset shown on cpuupgrade that has a PGA988b socket
will it work?
Response: It's the same package. Take a look at the specifications of your processor here or on the cpu-upgrade.com. It will show which socket the
CPU uses.

Hello everybody. I want to know what's will apend if I don't respect the tdp ? thanks
Response: If you go from 35W to 45W then the chances are good that the CPU will work just fine. The CPUs have a Thermal Monitor feature, that
protects from overheating by throttling voltage and frequency when the temperature exceeds certain threshold.
new motherboard
Posted by: stephen meiners 2015-04-05 07:46:48
ok so i have a question, i have recently bought an asrock motherboard that supports am2,am2+, and am3, and 3+, i also have am i5-2540m cpu with
a g2 socket, can i use the i5 on my new motherboard??
Response: No, Intel processors will not fit into it. In the past 15+ years all Intel CPUs used their own proprietary sockets, and same with AMD.
Response: HM76 is from 7-series chipsets, they are mentioned in the second paragraph. I will expand it and add exact chipset names there.

Response: It depends on motherboard implementation, and not on the CPU. More expensive laptops support it, and cheaper laptops don't.

CPU Upgrade
Posted by: plume 2016-06-10 21:48:53
Just posting if it's any use to anyone, as it seems only me and one other person (someone with a video of upgrading to an i3, i5 and i7 on youtube) has
ever done this CPU upgrade on this laptop in the world... :)
I bought an Acer Aspire V3-531 for 150 a couple of years ago (VA50_HC_HR motherboard, G2, HM77, BIOS v1.13), it came with a Pentium B980, and
after a little research, I was surprised to see that you could actually upgrade the CPU! (Not soldered,as one would expect). I now have an i5 2540M in
it, 8gb and a 500gb SSD drive. Was wondering if I could go to an i5 3320M? (Simply because it has the HD 4000 chipset instead of the 3000 mine
currently has, which seems to be the bottleneck of the system). Anyone have any advice?
Thanks in advance :)
Posted by: Csar 2016-06-20 17:19:05
Unfortunately the upgrade is not possible because the i5-3320m is 3rd generation and both the B980 and the i5-2540M are 2nd generation. Take a
look at the list to see possible CPU upgrades.
cpu-upgrade is a site where you can research on the CPU upgrade.
In my case, I have a laptop with the chipset hm76 but using an i7-2620m. I tried installing an i3-3120m and it worked, but only for some minutes.
Looks like when Windows recognize the new CPU it turns the laptop off.
Isn't the hm76 chipset supposed to have support for 3rd gen Intel processors?
Intel sucks

Got the x75a with pentium 2020m (low intel hd graphic) so the x75a aldo comes with i-5 at same board installed i-3 and no probs with that enhanced
graphic fps, but they build in a 30 minutes timer if you try to Upgrade your Notebook, didt know if its the same at all machines. Chipset hm70.
