ABSTRACT
Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) using propofol for induction and maintenance has
currently become more and more popular among anaesthesiologists as an alternative of the
more conventional inhalation anaesthesia. Several techniques have been developed and used
for anaesthesia induction and maintenance during operation including intermittent bolus,
manually controlled infusion (MCI) with use of syringe pump, and the most recent technique
of targetted controlled infusion (TCI). The main purpose of the use of the newer techniques
and instruments is to lower the patients morbidity.
This study was a case control study carried out to compare the MCI technique with the
TCI (targeted plasma concentration schnider model) technique in terms of their
haemodynamic response and time to resume consciousness, which was measured from the
time when propofol administration was stopped until the patients were able to open their eyes
under verbal command. To prevent any bias, the instrument of index of consciousness was
used in order to equalize the depth of anaesthesia (505).
