Abstract

This project consisted of the detailed design of the dimensions and

reinforcement of the concrete members of a five-story office building structure,

which had pre-determined overall building dimensions. First, the given loads to be

borne by the structure were determined. These loads were then used to estimate

the column dimensions in order to determine the slab and beam reinforcement

necessary. Two slabs were designed, one for all of the floors, and one for the roof,

based on different load-bearing requirements. Due to symmetry, the typical floor

only had 3 different kinds of T-beams, and the case was the same with the roof, for a

total of 6 different T-beams that required unique design. Each of these 6 T-beams

was analyzed at 4 critical sections to determine the different flexural reinforcements

required. Following this, all T-beams were designed for shear, and their deflections

were calculated to determine whether they complied with the serviceability

requirements of the code. Finally, the reinforcement required in the columns was

determined for 6 representative column lines, for a total of 30 unique column

variations (though many have similar reinforcement requirements). This included

the calculation of the spacing between stirrups for a standard stirrup size used

throughout all column lines. The result is a significantly well-designed first draft of

the design of this structure, which would need to be iterated in order to see the

structure through to implementation. The only outright departure from code is in

the deflection of a beam line, but all areas of the design can be made more efficient.

All of the calculations herein were done in accordance with ACI 318-14, and the

associated checks to ensure compliance can also be found in this document.

Introduction

The starting point for the overall design of the members of this structure

consisted of the span lengths of the defined members, shown after this introduction.

From these building dimension requirements, a total of 2 slabs and 6 T-beams

needed to be designed, with 6 critical sections of rebar reinforcement to be designed

on each slab, and 4 such critical sections to be designed for each T-beam, along with

6 column lines, resulting in 30 critical column sections (one per floor per line). Each

T-beam was designed for shear and tested for deflection to ensure serviceability.

For each of the slabs, calculations were made to determine the required steel

area to carry the moments associated with the designated loading condition. Due to

the relatively small member size, and significant minimum steel requirements from

ACI, the calculated steel required for the slabs only exceeded the ACI minimum at 2

different critical sections, each on the typical floor slab. A similar situation was

encountered with the A-line T-Beams, for both Roof and Floor, with the ACI

minimum steel requirement being greater than that required to withstand the

loading moment in a significant number of sections. However, most sections in the

T-beams throughout the building did not experience a similar phenomenon.

The first calculations made were the determining and factoring of the loads

to be distributed across each slab. In order to determine these loads, the thickness

of the slab was determined using the span length and ACI 318-14. Once calculated,

these loads allowed for the calculation of the column size, necessary to compute the

clear span length in both slab and T-beam design. Following this, the moments at

6
each critical section of a slab strip of 12 were found (6 separate points) and rebar

reinforcement requirements were determined for each of these critical sections. A

similar process was followed in the design of the T-beams, with the effective widths

varying depending on whether the moment was positive or negative, as well as how

large the clear span lengths were associated with each critical section.

Once the longitudinal rebar in the T-beams was designed, an analysis of the

strength of the beam in shear was performed in order to determine the amount of

steel required to prevent shear failure. Due to the relatively large beam member

size for the given loads, the concrete itself provided great resistance to shear forces

in all beams. Because of this, all 6 representative T-beams required only the amount

of reinforcing steel minimally required by code in shear. The distinction between

where the minimum amount of shear reinforcement was needed versus where none

was needed, according to code, was not considered because it was deemed

imprudent to design any section of the beam without shear reinforcement, no

matter the loading condition.

Once the T-beams were completely designed, they were then analyzed for

their deflection to determine if they meet ACI 318-14 serviceability requirements.

There were 12 representative beam spans to consider, each of the 6 representative

beams having two: a middle span and an exterior span. All but one beam span of the

12 representative types passed the code requirements, and the one failed beam

span fell short of ACI standards by about a hundredth of an inch.

Finally, the column reinforcements were designed by the use of an

approximate interaction diagram, with an added manual factor of safety to the steel

7
ratio value required by the diagram to account for variation in the accuracy of the

interaction diagram. The steel requirements were determined based on the

calculations of the maximum and minimum axial loads to be placed on the column

section, coupled with the maximum moment possible in each of the two scenarios.

These two points ensure that all possible loading scenarios fall within the

acceptable range on the interaction diagram. A total of 30 column sections were

designed, 5 each along 6 representative beam lines.

A discussion of the difficulties encountered within each separate design

process, and how the associated problems were solved or mitigated, can be found in

each specific part of the design section of this report. Though a mostly complete and

up-to-code design, there are issues with the design as it is currently presented

which must be resolved before moving forward with the implementation of this

structure. However, these changes are quite minor.

Design
Loads and Column Dimensions

The design was begun with given loads for the roof and floors to carry. These

loads can be seen in the following tables, for the roof and the floors, respectively.

An estimate of the slabs dimensions from ACI Table 7.3.1.1 was used in

order to determine the self-weight of the slab, which was then added to these loads.

The loads were then factored and resulted in the following:

Table 3. Total Area Loads

Story Load (psf)

The approximate column size was calculated by determining the tributary

area of the column bearing the greatest load, and calculating the column dimensions

needed to support such a load. From this, the column dimensions were estimated at

10 x 10. This column width was used in subsequent calculations. Details of all of

these calculations can be found in the appendix.

10
Slab Design

Once the loads were determined, a slab design could follow by calculating the

moment that each section of the slab would be required to bear, and then

determining the steel necessary to withstand that moment. The moments at each of

the 6 critical sections of a 12 strip of slab were found by ACI 318-14: 6.5, and

separate rebar reinforcement requirements were calculated for each. The rebar

requirements were calculated using equations from Darwin, et. al.; the process for

using these is detailed in the appendix. Upon completion of these calculations, many

areas required only the minimum amount of reinforcement, that is, Number 3 bars

at a spacing of 11, including the entire roof slab. The detailed, tabular and visual,

results of this process follow, and the subsequent two tables show the steps

undertaken in those calculations. The bolded numbers represent the governing steel

areas.

In each table, the chosen rebar size and spacing are highlighted. A detailed

example of these calculations can be found in the appendix, along with a figure that

labels each of the six critical slab sections. It should be noted that section 3 governs

over section 4 where there is discrepancy because it requires the larger amount of

reinforcement. Additionally, as shown in the calculations found in the appendix, the

perpendicular shrinkage/temperature rebar needed was determined to be number

3 at 11 spacing for both the floor and the roof slabs. Those calculations also verify

compliance with ACI 318-14: 7.7.2.3, 7.6.1, and 24.4. The drawings below show a

representative slab section containing the exterior span, and one interior span,

along the slab design strip shown in the typical floor plan (Figure 1).

T-Beam Flexural and Shear Design

A total of 6 different T-beams exist on the floor and roof levels (A, B, and C

served as the representative T-Beams for both roof and floor), each having 4

different critical sections to analyze for reinforcement requirements. These

calculations were done using excel.

For each section, the maximum moment was determined by using the

previously calculated loads, as well as the tributary areas associated with each

beam, and ACI moment coefficients. Depending on the sign associated with the

moment, the effective beam width was either the web width (for negative moments)

or calculated based on ACI 318-14: 6.3.2.1. After this was determined, the steel

required for each section could be calculated, and rebar reinforcement could be

chosen. Once the design was made, it was checked against ACI 318-14: 9.6.1.2

requirements for maximum and minimum steel area and strength requirements.

Summaries of these calculations, done in excel, can be found in tables in the

appendix, with the chosen rebar size and number highlighted. Detailed calculations

for an example positive and negative moment section, respectively, can be found in

the appendix.

The same 6 representative T-Beams were separately analyzed and designed

for shear reinforcement. However, each T-Beam resulted in the same design for

shear reinforcement, due to relatively great concrete shear strength compared to

the loads borne, and thus minimal required steel shear strength. Hence, the limiting

factors (based on ACI 318-14) came from the dimensions of the members

themselves, which resulted in a stirrup spacing of 6.25 inches throughout all beams.

15
As shown in the calculations in the appendix, many beams had concrete shear

strengths outweighing applied shear so greatly that large negative numbers appear

in the calculations in the table. All negative numbers are not for actual analysis, but

they show the overdesign of the beam in shear due to minimum code requirements.

In each set of calculations, the final stirrup spacing requirement for the minimum

amount of shear required in each beam by ACI 318-14: 9.7.6.2 is highlighted in

green. This value was used for the entire length of the beam, despite the allowances

in ACI 318-14: 9.6.3 due to an abundance of caution and conservatism. Additionally,

detailed hand calculations can also be found in the appendix.

All designs are shown through appendix calculation tables to be in

compliance with strength factors found in ACI 318-14: 9.5.1.1. Additionally, the

calculations verify compliance with the relevant portions of ACI 318-14: 25.5. Below

are the final design drawings. The first shows an elevation view of the typical floor

beam and roof beam, with shear reinforcement and spacing shown, along with the

development length of longitudinal reinforcement. This drawing has is completed by

a mirror image of itself. The called out sections, A-A, B-B, C-C, and D-D correspond to

the cross-sectional beam drawings showing reinforcement that follow afterwards.

Each cross-sectional drawing also contains slab steel at the top, which is separate.

T-Beam Deflection Control / Serviceability

In order to compute the deflections associated with each of the two spans of

the 6 representative members (12 total spans), the un-factored loading conditions

expected on the structure had to first be calculated. Following this, the gross

moment of inertia was calculated to estimate the un-cracked moment of inertia for

each beam section. Using the modulus of rupture, the gross moment of inertia, and

the geometry of the beam, positive and negative cracking moments were found. The

moment applied to each section was calculated using moment coefficients found in

ACI 318-14: 6.5.2. For each beam section that was cracked, a cracked moment of

inertia was found by determining the neutral axis at cracking. This allowed for the

calculation of the effective moment of inertia using the ratio of the cracking moment

to the moment applied to the respective section, as well as the gross moment of

inertia and the cracked moment of inertia. Where no cracking was found, the

effective moment of inertia at that section remained the gross moment of inertia.

The total effective moments of inertia at the mid-span of each of the twelve spans

were then found by combining the moments of inertia from the two negative-

moment sections and the positive moment section in the ratio 0.25:0.25:0.5 (right

negative : left negative : positive). Once the overall effective moment of inertia was

found, the immediate deflection due to the total load could be calculated using the

formula shown in the detailed calculations, and the time dependent deflection was

found by multiplying this value by the percentage of the total load that was

sustained, along with the time dependent factor (see appendix). As a result of these

calculations, all beams were determined to be adequately serviceable, according to

ACI 318-14, except for representative beam C, which had a mid-span deflection

about one hundredth of an inch greater than allowed by code. Increasing the beam

dimensions to increase the moment of inertia that resists the bending moment could

reduce this deflection. These calculations are also shown to be in compliance with

ACI 318-14: 24.4 through various checks in the detailed calculation tables.

22
Column Reinforcement Design

A total of 30 different column sections were designed, the result of 6 unique

beam lines, each with 5 different columns sections corresponding to the 5 floors of

the building. The maximum and minimum possible axial loads that could be applied

on the structure were calculated, and each paired with the maximum moment, to be

analyzed using an interaction diagram, which then resulted in steel ratios required

for each unique column span. Using the maximum and minimum axial loads, each

with the maximum moment, ensures that all possible loading conditions are

contained within the correct portion of the interaction diagram.

The interaction diagram associated with a gamma value of 0.60 was used,

despite the calculation of a gamma value of 0.525 (see appendix calculations). This

was accounted for by using between about 0.005-magnitude-greater steel ratios,

rho, than required by the approximate interaction diagram, in order to

conservatively estimate the true amount of steel necessary. Additionally, due to

standard rebar sizes, more steel than calculated to be necessary was added to many

different column sections, so this added conservative estimate further ensures that

the interaction diagram discrepancy does not significantly change the design.

For some critical column sections, the calculated maximum load was below

the threshold specified by the code, the threshold under which the column must be

treated as a beam with regard to strain calculation. Therefore, the interaction

diagram was used to estimate the strain on the reinforcement, ensuring that it was

above 0.004, the value it must surpass according to ACI 318-14 9.3.3.1. This

verification can be found in the comprehensive tables of calculations found in the

23
appendix. With it are found the shear stirrup spacing calculations based on ACI 318-

14 25.2.3 and the verification of the longitudinal rebar spacing requirements in

accordance with ACI 318-14 25.7.2.1. As can be seen in the table, no column

exceeds 8% rebar, satisfying ACI 318-14 25.2.3, and most fall well short of the

preferred practical limit of 4%. As required by ACI 318-14 10.7.3.1, all columns have

at least 4 longitudinal bars to hold the stirrups. The no. 3 rebar size for the stirrups

satisfies ACI 318-14 25.7.2.2.

Due to high loads, the interior columns required greater reinforcement, while

the edge and corner columns, with very small tributary areas, required the ACI

minimum reinforcement frequently, and relatively small amounts of reinforcement

in other cases. The moments acting on the center columns were reduced due to

beams on either side of the columns counteracting the effects of one another. The

following drawings show the design of each of the 30 critical column sections. Many

drawings could be consolidated into a smaller number due to identical final design

specifications. For detailed sample calculations and tabulated comprehensive

calculations, consult the appendix.

Summary and Conclusions
Though, as the first iteration, this design did not result in the most efficient

set of plans by which to construct the target structure, it was found to be nearly

completely compliant with ACI 318-14, and would require only minor modification

to be a legally constructible building. One significant, but not egregious, oversight

discovered near the conclusion of calculations was the absence of factoring in

calculations of the load generated by the beam stems. This mistake was discovered

before the columns were designed, and would result in only very minor changes to

the beam calculations, as the beam stems make up only a small portion of the dead

loads, the rest of which were factored, and the dead load factor is not a large factor

in the first place.

The resulting members of the design were 10 x 10 columns throughout the

structure, with reinforcement ranging from 4 number 5 bars to 8 number 7 bars,

depending on the critical section, along with T-beams of web width 10 and various

effective flange widths that were part of the 5.5 thick floor and roof slabs, each of

which were reinforced with number 3 rebar at various spacing. The T-beams had

reinforcement ranging from 2 number 5 bars to 3 number 7 bars to resist various

positive and negative moments. Shear reinforcement in the T-beams consisted of

number 3 rebar at the maximum code-allowed spacing, 6.25, throughout, and

deflections of these beams all met code, except the middle span of floor beam C. This

design nearly complies with ACI 318-14; one more iteration would easily produce a

compliant structure, with additional iterations being desirable to increase the

structures efficiency.

28
Recommendations

For reasons entailing both compliance with code and economic incentives,

several recommendations of how to proceed with this report follow. Firstly, the un-

factored beam stem load must be corrected, and any changes resulting from that

need to be taken into account. There will likely be a very small difference in load,

and thus minimal effect on the design, so no more need be said regarding that error.

In order to fix the problem of deflection within the mid-span of floor beam C, the

depth of the beam should be increased in that line, and for uniformitys sake, one

could increase the depth in other lines as well. Only a quite modest increase is

necessary, but this increase would also surely offset any negative effects from

factoring the previously un-factored beam stem load.

In the economic realm, there are a few different considerations to explore.

One of these is the owners willingness to take full advantage of code allowances

with regard to shear reinforcement. None of the beam required shear reinforcement

above the minimum value prescribed by code, and many sections of the beams

would not require any shear reinforcement at all, per se, but the decision was made

to design for the minimum shear reinforcement out of an abundance of caution. This

part of the design could conceivably be changed if it is cost-prohibitive.

Finally, the columns used in this structure had wildly varying necessary load-

bearing capabilities, and in construction of the final structure, it would make sense

to vary the size of each column in accordance with the amount of load it would need

to bear, rather than have a standard size throughout the structure, as this would be

significantly more efficient.
