Visits the CE Society Malaysia Chapter

hingo Yamaguchi and delegates
from Yamaguchi University, Japan,
visited the Consumer Electronics
(CE) Society Malaysia Chapter in
Kuala Lumpur on 16 December 2016.
The meeting was hosted at the Universi
ty Putra Malaysia (UPM). The meeting
was hosted by the chair of the IEEE CE
Society Malaysia Chapter, Thinagaran
Perumal, who is also an assistant profes
sor in the Department of Computer Sci
ence, UPM.
Perumal first took the visitors for a
mini campus tour, specifically to the
Embedded Systems and Robotics Lab
oratory of the faculty and to other labs
demonstrating the recently developed
Internet of Things (IoT) p rojects. The
Chapter meeting was scheduled from

room of the Faculty of Computer Sci
ence and Information Technology,

The meeting began with a presenta
tion by Perumal in which he noted the
planned 2017 activities of the CE Soci
ety Malaysia, departmental activities,
current projects and milestones, and
potential collaboration areas. He also
focused on a the scope of research in
IoT and highlighted the other research

activities within the faculty. This was
followed by a presentation from Shingo
Yamaguchi on the a ctivities of Yamagu
chi University, including its research
areas, projects, and global technology
program, which is similar to those that
have been successfully carried out
recently in other countries such as Thai
land and India.
Many interesting technical discus
sions ensued after the talks. Postgrad
uate students Raihani Mohamed and
Noor Farah Shahida delivered brief
presentations on their current research
work. After the technical presentation,
a fruitful discussion took place on pos
sible collaboration activities. Yamagu
chi highlighted the research activities
carried out in his research group and
informed the members that the depart
ment has started an initiative on IoT,
especially in the areas of modeling
and architecture.
 Representatives from the CE Soci
ety Malaysia Chapter have also offered
a call for papers for the International
Symposium on Consumer Electronics
2017 (ISCE 2017) to be held in Nov
ember 2017. Yamaguchi suggested
that the Chapter-organized ISCE 2017
could possibly include members from
interacting countries as well as mem
bers of the previous technical program
committee to improve collaboration
and participation in the conference.

A Repeat Performance:
Flying Animals and the Art of Presentation

T
he popular flying animals inter
active and nontraditional Young
Professionals (YP) session re
ached Las Vegas, Nevada. It
was coordinated by Tom Wilson, gen
eral chair of the 2016 International
Conference on Consumer Electronics
(ICCE) in Berlin, and Tom Coughlin,
the chair of the CE Society Future
Directions committee. Following its suc
cess at the 2016 ICCEBerlin, this ses
sion was presented a second time in Las
Vegas. This was proposed by Coughlin
and Abdullah Almuttiri, the past chair of
the CE Society YP committee.
The session began with Coughlin
