1 a) Define specific gravity.


b) Write the SI units of specific weight and surface tension.
c) Define Metacentric height.
d) State the conditions of equilibrium of floating bodies.
e) Define steady flow.
f) Define stream function.
g) Write the hydraulic co-efficient.
h) List the forces acting on the fluid flow.
i) What is an orifice meter? Write the expression for discharge through an orifice meter.
j) Write Darays equation and Chezys equation for the loss of head due to friction in pipes. 2 10

2 a) Define: i. Dynamic viscosity ii. Kinematic viscosity. 4


b) State and prove Pascals law. 8
c) The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each side of the plate is
60 cm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5 mm. The upper plate which moves at 2.5 m/s
requires a force of 98.1 N to maintain the speed. Determine:
i. The dynamic viscosity of the oil in poise.
ii. The kinematic viscosity of the oil in stokes if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.95. 8

3 a) A pontoon of 15696 kN displacements is floating in water. A weight of 245.25 kN is moved


through a distance of 8 m across the deck of pontoon, which tilts the pontoon through an
angle 4. Find the meta-centric height of the pontoon. 4
b) Derive an expression for the depth of centre of pressure from free surface of liquid of an
inclined plane surface submerged in the liquid. 8
c) Determine the total pressure and centre of pressure on an isosceles triangular plate of base
4 m and altitude 4 m when it is immersed vertically in an oil of specific gravity 0.9. The base
of the plate coincides with the free of oil. 8

4 a) Define compressible and incompressible flows. 4


b) Derive the continuity equation in three dimensions. 8
c) The stream function for a two dimensional flow is given by = 2xy, calculate the velocity at
the point p(2, 3). Find the velocity potential function . 8

5 a) State Bernoullis theorem for steady flow of an incompressible fluid. Also express
mathematically. 4

c) A horizontal venturimeter with inlet diameter 20 cm and throat diameter 10 cm is used to
measure the flow of oil of specific gravity 0.8. The discharge of oil through venturimeter is 60
lit/sec. Find the reading of the oil-mercury differential manometer. Take cd=0.98. 8

6 a) State Bunkinghams -theorem. 4


b) The resisting force R of a supersonic plane during flight can be considered as dependent upon
the length of the aircraft l, velocity V, air viscosity , air density and bulk modulus of air K.
Express the functional relationship between these variables and the resisting force. 8
c) An oil of specific gravity 0.9 and viscosity 0.06 poise is flowing through a pipe of diameter
200 mm at the rate of 60 lit/sec. Find the head lost due to friction for a 500 m length of pipe.
Find the power required to maintain the flow. 8
