There are two suggested pathways for the Master of IT. Choose
a thesis or an applied research report.
Thesis Pathway: You must complete IT8400 Research in IT,
IT8417 Research Proposal and IT9401 Thesis.
Select 3 additional elective courses in Tri 2, 2016 and 1 additional
elective course in Tri 1, 2017 to qualify as a full-time student.
Note, IT9401 will be spread across Tri 1 and 2, 2017.
Research Report Pathway: You must complete IT8400
Research in IT, IT8417 Research Proposal and IT9400 Applied
Research Project.
Select 3 additional elective courses in Tri 2, 2016 and 3 additional
elective courses in Tri 1, 2017 to qualify as a full-time student.
Note, IT9400 will be offered in Tri 2, 2017.
To qualify as a part-time student, select 1-2 courses per trimester.
Remember to check for pre-requisite courses (Pre: ITxxxx) and do
not select more than 8 courses for the year.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW: Programme structure

All courses are 15 credits, unless stated otherwise. Thesis Pathway
All courses are offered in Petone, except IT9401 Thesis (which Tri 2 Tri 1 Tri 2
is self-directed) and IT8415 Internship (location dependent on 2017 2018 2018
employer). Research in IT, plus Research Proposal, Continue with Thesis
3 electives Thesis, plus 1 elective
IT8417 is prerequisite for IT9400 Applied Research Project and
IT9401.
Note, you cannot take IT8412 Research Project as an elective.
Mid-year students
Research Report Pathway
If you are starting in July, note that you will do the courses in
Tri 2 Tri 1 Tri 2
reverse order. You will complete Trimester Two courses first,
2017 2018 2018
then Trimester One courses the following year (as per table above).
Research in IT, plus Research Proposal, Applied Research
Recognition of prior learning and cross credit procedures 3 electives plus 3 electives Project, plus 1 elective
Students may be granted up to 90 credits in recognition of

Award of qualifications
The Master of Information Technology requires successful Internship/ Research Project
completion of a minimum of 180 credits from Level 8 (including IT8415 Internship and IT8412 Research Project are worth 30 credits
IT8400 and IT8417) and Level 9 (either IT9400 or IT9401). All and equivalent to 2 elective courses. If you have the option to
requirements must be completed within five years of first choose 3 electives during a semester and wish to complete an
enrolment. internship or research project, select IT8415 or IT8412 and only
1 other elective course.
