Rationale for Inclusion

Because this is important for metadata sharing.

With foreign language editions, not everyone will

know which work is depicted

Metadata sharing. The local repository knows it's

JKR but we can't omit this information
Sometimes dust-jacket illustrations continue on
the back cover, so knowing whether there's a
dust jacket versus a paper cover might be
important. Also for covers that are not illustrated
per se, leather v. cloth binding is probably
relevant to the repository.

Not required because this is also present

elsewhere in the record, but included for clarity
and completeness.

To locate within the archive and group materials

in the best user-friendly way
Especially in case of images published by other
repositories; also important just for rights and
location info

The inclusion of the free-text field allows for

greater specificity than the MARC codes, while
the MARC codes add a greater degree of
machine readability to the record.

For finding online -- harvesting from other

institutions and interoperability
Because if someone is seaching the JKR
Archive as a whole for Bellatrix Lestrange, we
want the covers for Book 5 to come up in this
search; I think it would also be cool to discuss in
our group report how none of these authority
files really include the specific Harry Potter stuff,
so we would probably would need to create a
local authority file for our archive if it were real
Because even though the repository owns the
image, I think you still have to take this
information into account for distribution
Will bring up relevant results for users looking
specifically for images of Albus Dumbledore or
the Forbidden Forest.

Important for identifying which published book

this cover image belongs to

This will help with keyword searching in case this

abstract contains keywords that are not included
in the subject fields.

So people can find and search within the

collection/locate the materials

Right information for reseachers/those that want

to use the images
Identifies the file type of the resource as well as
the type of resource.

To locate/assign unique place

Aid in searching and browsing of the collection

Provides background information on why the

edition was created/published. Great for
researchers!

Important for 1-to-1 principle; easier mapping to

MARC
This could help filter out covers from years in
which users are not interested, like if they only
want to see covers from books 6 and 7.

Important information for users searching for

publishable information or images.
Helps to match the digital image to the specific
publication; also will point users to the image file
for a particular book.

So users can search via any known access

point, including the designer's name.
If the title is not pictured on the cover this is
useful; also if the language is not easily visibly
identifiable.

Searching

So people who want to visit the JKR Archive

know where to look for the physical resource and
so staff know where to find the physical resource

For background on original item's illustration

process (e.g., watercolor, pastels, etc.)

The collection could include covers and

illustrations of more than just books; DVDs,
audiobooks, etc.
To attribution and clarity of location and
difference between our item and the book itself;
to indicate if the JKR received photos from
another library or repository
Because it doesn't make sense to use something
not present in the photograph, such as the book
title.
Because Ann takes really awesome pictures,
and you want to find all the pictures in the
collection she's taken.
Because this is very relevant to cover art,
especially if you only want to see cover art from
Scholastic.

To distinguish between records

Important for 1-to-1 principle; easier mapping to

MARC
Important for 1-to-1 principle; easier mapping to
MARC

Important for copyright issues related to the JKR

as a whol as well as metadata sharing.

To differentiate between the book, where we

have 'original item type' field

Digital location of the digital image; also provides

a way to link to the image.
