Lesson description

In this lesson the students will learn about the different countries of the continent South-America and
the names of the capitals of the countries and national languages
They will be teaches about the biggest or highest: mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, desserts and
islands. The students can relate the geographical location of South-America (on the geographical map)
with the climate types in the countries of South-America. They can mention through which countries
the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn runs.
The students will learn about the 4 typical (natural) vegetation of South America and where they find
them. In the end the students will learn about the natural resources of South-America and they will
calculate the population density of each country of South-America and make their conclusion which
country of South-America are the top 5 counties with highest population density.

How I touched this lesson

For this lesson the students need a atlas, they will use it through the lesson.
I started my lesson with Suriname, in which continent it located and start telling about the discovery
story of Christopher Columbus and the arrival of the European in the Caribbean and the Americas.
They already know how this story and also how the Indians where came from Asia, though the Bering
see to Alaska and spread over whole Americas. This they know from the history lessons of grade 1.
The class was divided in groups of 4 students where they work on the tasks, discuss the answers in their
groups and after that we discuss the answer in the class. The task were they have to find on the map of
South-America the items mentioned in paragraph one.

How will I use STREAM to enhance my lesson?

Science:
Name the 13 countries of South-America and their capitals and national languages.
Which are the 4 highest mountains of South- America
Which are the longest rivers of South America
In which country we find the Atacama Desert, the Maracaibo Lake and Titicaca Lake?
By which countries the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn runs and what type of climate do we have
among the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn?

Technology:
Students can use an Atlas, Google earth, internet to make their tasks
Students have to work with their atlas during this lesson sessions.
They will use google earth to search for topographic place of South-America to see the real situations,
like Angel falls, Kaietur Falls, deserts, Andes Mountain, etc. But they will also use google earth to see
what the distance is between Paramaribo and other capitals in South-America to use it in another task.
They can use other internet site, like Wikipedia, for searching information about the typical vegetation
an climate in South-America
Reading:
The students have to make an essay of the story about the population of South-America. They have to
search for more information on internet and write a short story about the races we have the most in
South-America, how they came to South-America and what the combine race are that we find in South-
America. Further they have search information about the typical vegetation we have in South-America
and in which countries we find them. They have to describe which countries the equator and the Tropic
of Capricorn runs.

Engineering:
Students will explain why the population density in some countries is higher than in other countries of
South-America. The pull and push factors will be discuss in the class and they have to compare it with
Suriname. Students have to look for how many capitals of South-America countries lies in the coast
area and discuss why. There will be a opportunity for the teacher to talk about migration forms, like
urbanization, in South-Amerika. Students will think and come with solutions for urbanization and
highest population density, because highest population density in some area can lead to slum in some
areas, like favelas in Brasil.

Art:
Students have a blanc map of South-America to this part of the task
They have to draw /color /named
- The longest mountain of South-Amerika at the west coast (brown)
- The largest rivers (dark blue)
- The top 5 counties with highest population density (red)
- The Largest lake of South-Amerika (light blue)
- The Largest desert of South-America (red)
- The countries where we find the 4 typical natural vegetation of South-Amerika
- The equator and the Tropic of Capricorn

Mathematics:
The students have their table with the surface area and population of each country of South-America
and now they have to calculate the population density of each country. After they calculate it they have
to rank the top 5 countries with the highest population density and what rank do Suriname have.
Students will get one more task to do with google earth, they have to look for the distance (in
kilometers) between Paramaribo and 3 other capitals in South-America and calculate the distance in a
geography scale rate of 1: 100.000.
