Rules for Operations With Integers

7th and 8th Grade Math Students

The summer math work has been assigned to review skills that are necessary for the upcoming
curriculum as well as next years standardized exams. It is mandatory that you know the
following material:

1. All multiplication tables up to 12

2. Operations with integers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) please refer
to the sheets provided
3. Fractions how to add, multiply, divide, and reduce them.

Attached you will find the rules for operations with integers, please study them!

Also attached you will find five math worksheets. They contain task based questions that are in
line with the core curriculum. Please complete all material on the worksheets. These
worksheets will be due the first full week of school. They will be graded!

You will be tested on the summer material in the first month of school.

The grades will be placed on the SIS system and will count towards your first quarter report
card grade in math.

In addition to studying the above material, I am suggesting that you spend a few hours a week
on either of the following websites: www.IXL.com or www.mangahigh.com. These websites
are aligned with the New York State Math Core Curriculum. They are easy to navigate and
provide fun practice in a variety of different math areas.

Addition
If the signs are the same (both negative or both positive) - add the numbers and keep the sign.

If the signs are different - subtract the two numbers and keep the sign of the larger number.

Addition Examples:

-5 + -8 Add the two numbers and keep the sign. -13

10 + 3 Add the two numbers and keep the sign. 13

Subtract the two numbers and keep the sign of the larger number,
-3 + 7 4
which is the 7.

Subtract the two numbers and keep the sign of the larger number,
6 + -10 -4
which is the 10.

Subtraction
Change the subtraction sign to addition

Change the sign of the second number (if it's negative, change it to positive... if it's positive,
change it to negative)

Follow the rule for addition

Subtraction Examples:

Change the subtraction sign to addition and change the 4 to a -4. -

-9 - 4 -13
9 + -4. Then follow the rules for addition.

Change the subtraction sign to addition and change the 7 to a -7. 3

3-7 -4
+ -7. Then follow the rules for addition.

Change the subtraction sign to addition and change the -3 to a 3. 14

14 - -3 17
+ 3. Then follow the rules for addition.

Change the subtraction sign to addition and change the -5 to a 5. -2

-2 - -5 3
+ 5. Then follow the rules for addition.

-6 -2 Since the signs are the same the answer will be positive. 12

-7 2 Since the signs are different the answer will be negative. 14

4 -9 Since the signs are different the answer will be negative. -36

Division Examples:

36 6 Since the signs are the same the answer will be positive. 6

-49 -7 Since the signs are the same the answer will be positive. 7

-9 3 Since the signs are different the answer will be negative. -3
