Open dumping of waste generated and uncollected is the most common option in waste
management schemes from villages/subdivisions. Lack of sanitation services or rudimentary
waste management systems favored this practice. This problem, when left unsettled, will cause
damages in the community. This is usually caused by the following:
(1) No rules are implemented in the village/subdivision. (or not strictly regulated)
Alternative 1 Alternative 2
Tarpaulin cost: 700 (6ft x 5ft) Number of person to hire: 3 (1 driver, 2
Number of tarpaulins: 5 collectors) 365/daily
Labor cost: 1,000 (wholesale) Equipment needed: Brand new garbage truck
Total implementation cost: 700 * 5 pieces = 2,051,000
3,500 + 1,000 (labor) = 4,500 Total implementation cost (1 month): 365 *
3 = 1,095/daily * 6days/week *
4weeks/month = 26,280(salary) +
2,051,000(equipment) = 2,077,280
4. Selection of a criterion (or criteria)
Alternative 1 is focusing on the awareness of the community to deal with the problem by
installing tarpaulins in conspicuous areas. These tarpaulins should clearly display the rules and
regulations of the village/subdivision by properly disposing of their garbage. A fine will be incurred
the moment these rules are violated.
Alternative 2 deals with the physical intervention of the problem by means of collecting the
garbage of the community. A typical garbage collector team consists of 3 people including the
driver. The overall cost
Alternative 1 would be the best option to choose since it is not only cheap but also allows
the community to deal with the problem together.
