WHAT

IS THE BRIDGE PROGRAM?

The Bridge Program offers an advanced language pathway for high school students who have passed the
Advanced Placement (AP) Language and Culture Exam, bridging the gap between completion of the exam
and higher education.

Students begin upper division university language course work in the high school setting, where each 3-
credit college course extends over a full academic year of high school. This rigorous and supportive
environment establishes a university and career pathway in two languages, and seeks to promote access
to bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural citizenship in Utah.

Bridge Program course work is designed as the continuation of

Utahs successful dual language immersion (DLI) program
(established in 2008 and currently serving more than 30,000
students) and seeks to promote enrollment by Heritage language
students who have passed the AP exam.

Students may take one course per year in grades 10-12,

allowing them to earn up to 9 credits in upper division university
study.
Students who successfully complete all 3 courses will
graduate from high school just 2 courses shy of a minor in their
language of study.
Bridge courses fall under the state Concurrent Enrollment
program, allowing them to count towards high school graduation
and cost just $5/credit.

WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE BRIDGE PROGRAM?

Take your language ability to a higher level! Higher Education = college. Students have class
with a university instructor weekly, while high school instructors design continuous practice and
support for you to meet advanced language and course goals.
If you dont use it, you lose it! Keep up on your language. Use it in school, use it in your life.
Make languages real and relevant for you and your community!
o Courses engage students in project-based learning where you design and carry out real-
world projects and interact with your local, state, or global language community.
o Courses may include field trips, local speakers, or projects which connect students
language to their community. All students visit their partner university campus each year
to explore university pathways in languages.
Get going on your college career! FIVE DOLLARS A CREDIT? Are you serious?? Get going on
college now.
