Basic Research:
Research -- looking for definitions, examples, & pictures -- what each of the following terms mean (think
about the context of technology)
Inventions
Something such as a device or process that has been created or
made up, or the process of creating or making up something or
figuring out a way to do something.
Steam engines, the wheel, the computer, and the internet.
Innovations
The action or process of innovating; a new method, idea, product, etc.
The internet, email, wifi, GPS, etc.
Computational Innovations
Examples: Texting, video conferencing, social media, cloud computing,
public data, etc.
MetroCards, Social Media, Youtube, Wikipedia, etc.
Society
The aggregate of people living together in a more or less
ordered community
A group of people with common territory, interaction, and
culture.
Culture
The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement
regarded collectively
Defined as a high degree of taste, knowledge and interest in arts,
literature and other scholarly fields.
Economy
Careful management of available resources; the wealth and resources
of a country or region, especially in terms of the production and
consumption of goods and services
Labor costs, interest rates, government policy, taxes and management.
Privacy
The state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed
by other people.
Appropriation of Name or Likeness, Intrusion Upon Seclusion, False Light, Public Disclosure
of Private Facts
Security
The state of being free from danger or threat.
Unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information. Theft or loss of
equipment that contains private or potentially sensitive information.
Data Storage
General term for archiving data in electromagnetic or other forms for use by
a computer or device. Different types of data storage play different roles in a
computing environment.
Floppy disks, magnetic tape, paper tape, punched cards, standalone RAM
disks, and Iomega Zip drives.
Input
A place where, or a device through which, energy or information enters
a system.
Keyboard, Image scanner, Microphone, Pointing device, Graphics tablet,
Joystick, Light pen, Mouse, Optical, Pointing stick, Touchpad,
Touchscreen, Trackball.
Output
A place where power or information leaves a system.
Monitor, Printer, Plotter, Projector, Speaker, Headphones, Light / LED.

Advances in technology are important to a growing civilization. The Oji-Cree rapidly advanced their
technology but it came with a price. The population had a massive increase in obesity, heart disease, and
type 2 diabetes along with addictions to opiates and alcohol. The Oji-Cree didnt give society time to cope
with the new technological advances so society got worse. People sought to decrease pain and increase
pleasure. Growing societies need to be careful of the absence of discomfort as it could lead to sofalarity not
a singularity.
