Digital tools and tech driven economy transform higher education

An Annotated Bibliography

"2016 Median Pay." U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Dec. 2015.

Web. 30 July 2017.

Within the Occupational Outlook Handbook the U.S Bureau of Labor brings together

statistics about the jobs in the United States. The data is divided by industry and focuses

on total jobs, open jobs, expected job growth and data on pay. This information is fact

based and does not include opinion.

As a government institution it can be expected that this information is accurate and

unbiased. This is a resource commonly used to evaluate the economy and job growth

data that is used as an economic indicator. The audience here is citizens, business

owners and educators. This information here may help them know what to study or

where to look for a job based on opening and growth.

This source supports my essay by providing information about the importance of

technology to our society and therefore our students. The article supported my view that

technology is growing and needs to be adopted Statistics and general ideas from this

source are included in my essay.

Burnsed, Brian. "Customize and Digitize Your College Education." U.S.News. N.p., Apr. 2011.

Web. Aug. 2017.

This source informs the reader about the growth of e-textbooks. The digital availability

of course content and how universities are adapting in the primary focus of the article.

Burnsed highlights a couple of companies that provide these digital resources. Statistics

on cost and adoption rate are also included.

U.S. News has been a new authority since 1933. From their length of time in operation

and size it can be expected that they maintain a higher quality of journalism. This quality

indicates that the information gathered from this source should be accurate and trusted to

use in my work.

As my essay will cover the addition of digital technology in higher education this source

fits very well. The article supports my idea that universities are spending money to adapt

and adopt this new digital resources to improve student experience. As this was one of

the first articles I found it helped to shape and confirm my topic of study. Information

about the resources being adopted will be included in the essay.

Burnsed, Brian. "YouTube Goes to College." U.S.News. N.p., May 2011. Web. Aug. 2017.

Cox, Janelle. "Benefits of Technology in the Classroom." TeachHUB. Teachers Alliance, Dec.

2015. Web. 29 July 2017.

This source tells the story of the adoption of video technology in education. Burnsed

specifically names universities using teleconferencing for courses and the availability of

free online lectures. The Youtube EDU program is highlighted and data on its

participants is provided.

This article also comes from U.S. News. I would attribute is the same level of confidence

in its content. While there doesn't appear to be an opinion, it does present these programs

only in a positive way.

As this article supports another use of digital technology to support higher education is

fits my essays goal of proving the impact and prevalence of technology in higher

education. It will be used as an anecdote about how video technology supports online

education.

Dotsenko, Svetlana. "Why edtech cant grow as much as healthtech." Tech Crunch. N.p., Oct.

2016. Web. Aug. 2017.

Dotsenko compares the adoption of technology in education and healthcare. The article

provided data about venture capital investments impact on adoption and the obstacles to

adoption of new technology.

The site hosting this article is called TechCrunch. This site hosts content relevant to the

technology consumer and industry. The validity of the information can not be trusted as

highly as a peer reviewed article or large news provider. However the fact that the

content is relative the sites purpose and theme suggests they would have better access and

knowledge on this topic than another sire.

This article includes a negative view of edtech in contrast to the mostly positive sources I

have found. It is not necessarily against tech in higher ed, but points out its growth is not

as strong as technology in healthcare. The point of view here helps to use the

information better. The data provided supports my theory about higher ed adopting

technology, but provides context as to why it can be a slow process for this type of

institution.

Flavin, Michael. Disruptive Technology Enhanced Learning: The Use and Misuse of Digital

Technologies in Higher Education. , 2017. Internet resource.

Flavin explores the impact of technology in higher education and looks at its

implementations from an administrative level. He includes student based data to support

his theories on technologies effects. Flavin also introduces the concept of technology

being misused especially when inferior products are used based on ease of use and lower

costs. He supports simple technology being introduced and used thoughtfully.

This source is a peer reviewed article found on the UNC-C library database system. As it

is a peer reviewed article it can be accepted with confidence.

Flavins university wide view of technology helped provide context to my paper on all the

areas of higher education that are affected by technology. I focused on the introduction

and first section as they seemed most relevant to my topic. The view of these

technologies from implementation stage to end user feedback was useful.

Kirkwood, Adrian, and Linda Price. "Technology-enhanced Learning and Teaching in Higher

Education: What Is enhanced and How Do We Know? a Critical Literature Review." Learning,

Media and Technology. 39.1 (2014): 6-36. Print.

Kirkwood and Price examine what is technology enhanced learning and how its impact

can be evaluated. Defining what technology enhanced learning is allows them to explain

in what way it can be implemented to provide feedback on its success. Then the purpose

and role of technology as currently implemented is explored.

This article is also a peer reviewed source from a journal on learning and technology The

reliability of this source is therefore higher as it has undergone review and revision in the

academic community.

This paper had a big impact on my research as it helped to shape the idea of what

technology enhanced learning is. This helped me put a term to the concept I am writing

about. It also helped provide context on how academics view the technology evolution.

Swartz, Jon. "Tech jobs are thriving nationwide." USA Today. N.p., Apr. 2017. Web. Aug. 2017.

Swartz shares the story of a booming U.S. digital economy. The article compares the

technology industry to other top producing sectors. Also highlighted are the pay

rates and unemployment rates for workers in this sector.

USA Today is a national new source and a large institution. Based on the notoriety and

size of this source it can be used. Swartz is also a Bureau Chief for the paper, this lends

him authority and reliability.

This article supported my introductory message on the relevance of technology in our

economy. I will use this source to back up my claims that technology needs to and why it

is being enhanced in higher ed to serve our technology reliant economy.

Tahnk, Jeana Lee. "Why We Need To Embrace Technology In The Classroom Right Now." The

Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 08 Oct. 2014. Web. 29 July 2017.

This blog post is a persuasive piece to introduce the positive impact of technology in the

classroom. Tahnk includes statistics from independent studies to prove the impact while

citing specific areas of improvement like adapting to individual learning styles. She also

introduces pieces of technology like ipads and chromebooks to describe their relevance in

today's classroom.

Huffington Post is not as scholarly a source as the New York Times, but still bears

relevance due its is popularity and wide distribution. This specific article is a blog post

and includes some of the authors personal opinion supporting the adoption of technology

in education. The sponsorship of the article by U.S Cellular may cause question to the

impartiality of the article. The statistics in the article are cited to external sites that are

respectable the the Pew Research Center.

Tahnks blog posted help me to shape a view of the need to introduce technology. I

previously had thought that everyone was on board with this, but her persuasive essay

supports the idea that some are not as open to it. She does a great job of outlining

potential benefits. I will use specific statistics from this source to support the positive

impact technology has on learning.
