SURFACE PREPARATION
LIMEWASHED &
CEMENT PAINTED SURFACES

INTRODUCTION
These surfaces very often present problems when over-painting, especially if they are
in an unsound condition. Thorough surface preparation is therefore essential. The
selection of sealer and primer will depend on the coating system to be applied, and
you are invited to request our assistance.

PREPARATION
Limewashed Surfaces: Thoroughly scrape and brush down with stiff fibre brushes, to
remove all loose material and provide a sound foundation for painting. Scrape and
wash areas of grease and oil with Fortaclean Synthetic thinners. These areas
must then be sealed and depending on the paint system chosen this may be with a
Keim Dilution, our Fortachlor Q734 Chlorinated Rubber based paint, or an
Aluminium Spirit-Based Sealer, before priming or painting. Always ensure that the
surface is clean and dry before applying the selected sealer.
Cement Painted Surfaces: Thoroughly scrape and brush down with stiff fibre brushes
to remove all loose material. Scrape and wash areas of grease and oil with
Fortaclean Synthetic thinners. These areas must then be sealed and
depending on the paint system chosen this may be with a Keim Dilution, our
Fortachlor Q734 Chlorinated Rubber based paint, or an Aluminium Spirit-Based
Sealer, before priming or painting. Always ensure that the surface is clean and dry
before applying the selected sealer.

PRIMER
The correct choice of primer is essential. The following table gives the right primer
which must be applied.
