to speak to veterans about benefits
The Whispering Pines and Prairie Chapter,
National Society Daughters of the American Rev-
olution and the American Legion Post #381 in
Croton, Michigan co-hosted an event on Saturday,
July 17th at the Croton post. Director Roy Luera
of the Ft. Custer National Cemetery near Kalama-
zoo, was invited to speak to area veterans about
their benefits. A small group of veterans watched
a short video and listened to Director Luera speak
about the national cemetery. He also answered
their questions on other topics. The director also

families together for support in several agricultural
and community service projects. The final results
of these projects are presented at Fair for judging.
Tamarack members were represented in every age
category and almost every project area. Many were
awarded top placing ribbons and earned a fair price
at the livestock auction for their market projects.
Now that Fair is over, it’s time to begin working on

support Still Waters Counseling Center
During the week of August 17-21, Kin-
del & Co. and Latitudes Roadhouse will
be donating a portion of their sales to Still
Waters Counseling Center. This is an im-
portant fund-raiser for Still Waters and a
great opportunity for a night out for great
shopping and a delicious meal.
Kindel & Co. will donate 15 percent of
their sales to Still Waters throughout the
week. They will host a reception on Friday,
August 20 from 5-8 pm, at which time they
will donate 20 percent of their sales. The
director of Still Waters, Marla Van Dam,
and other board members will be available
to meet you and thank you for your partici-
pation as you enjoy refreshments.
Latitudes Roadhouse will donate 10
percent of their sales to Still Waters on
Tuesday and Wednesday, August 17 & 18.
Still Waters personnel are thankful for the
participation of Kindel and Latitudes in
the community mission of Still Waters.
Still Waters Counseling Ministry
serves over 100 clients each month. They
are open for counseling of children, adults,
and couples. Still Waters is located at 218
N. Ensley, kitty-corner from the library.

AG EXPO 2010 draws in UNDER PRESSURE

Agriculture has a $71.3 billion affect on the
state’s economy, and this year’s Ag Expo, the
state’s largest outdoor farm show, which ended
its three-day run July 22 at Michigan State Uni-
versity (MSU), saw many of the state’s produc-
ers and community members recognize that im-
pact.
According to Ag Expo director Ruth Borger,
the total attendance for this year’s show was
15,500.
“We were thrilled by the excellent response
we received from visitors and exhibitors alike,”
she said. “Our focus this year was to increase our
educational opportunities for all of our visitors,
and we accomplished that goal. Overall, we are
pleased that all the hard work and effort paid off
for our community.”
Although attendance was down about 10 per-
cent from last year, Borger said turn-out was still
strong.
Visitors enjoyed demonstrations of stock dog
training, compact and utility tractors, livestock
handling and farm safety presentations includ-
ing a grain engulfment simulator.
Ag Expo drew about 250 commercial vendors
and more than 30 educational exhibitors, many
of whom showcased MSU research, teaching and
Extension work in the College of Agriculture and
Natural Resources (CANR) tent.
Visitors to the CANR tent contributed $1,500
to support CANR scholarships and enjoyed com-
plimentary ice cream from the MSU Dairy Store.
They learned about the potential for wind ener-
gy in Michigan, the possibilities for hoophouses
and the value of estate planning.
Additionally, CANR tent visitors saw daily
presentations from MSU Extension Master Gar-
deners on everything from how to get rid of moles
to invasive plant species. Hands-on activities in
the CANR tent saw the MSU School of Packaging
help visitors construct their own boxes, as well
as making their own windmill, biofuels and bean
pod necklaces.
Ag Expo is sponsored by the MSU College
of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Ag Expo
2011 is set for July 19-21 on the show grounds at
the corner of Mount Hope Road and Farm Lane.

Keeping your car on the road to safety and savings can start with
something as simple as well-maintained tires.
According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, about 11
percent of vehicles on the road have at least one bald tire, and 55
percent of vehicles have at least one underinflated tire.
Ongoing preventive maintenance — which can take less than
10 minutes — at least every month or before long trips is the best
method to maximize tire performance.
n Treading firmly. The only piece of a vehicle to touch the road
is the tires, making tire tread — a key factor in handling, corner-
ing, accelerating and braking — a vital part of overall tire mainte-
nance. Tire tread depth should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep
all around the tire, and drivers can check this by using a penny.
Insert the edge of the coin into the tread with Lincoln going in
head first. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there’s an
acceptable amount of tread; if the top of his head is visible at any
location on the tire, the tire is worn out and should be replaced.
n Wearing well. While examining the tread, also look for signs
of uneven wear or damage such as cuts, cracks, splits, punctures
and bulges. These conditions shorten the life of tires and, if not cor-
rected, may do further damage to the tire, or air loss may occur.
n Putting the pressure on. Tire pressure also plays a critical role
in the overall performance of tires as underinflation creates exces-
sive stress on the tire, while overinflation can cause uneven wear in
addition to handling and braking issues.
