I. Whats Up in 5th Grade?
Behavior and Work Expectations
A. Agenda Usage Daily assignments are posted on the
assignment board in the front of the room, and listed on the morning to-do list, to be
recorded in students agendas. Students (and parents) can refer to them at home to check
assignments that need completing. Parents, students should bring their agenda to you for
signatures. We encourage you to only sign agendas/reading logs if they are completed. This
is a student responsibility. No calls home for missing work or books, please!

B. Notebooks/Journals Students maintain a notebook for each content area. These serve a
useful purpose in helping your child keep class notes and hand-outs organized. They are the
BEST tool for reviewing for tests and refreshing memories on how to do all homework.

C. Weekly Folders These go home every Thursday. Graded papers may be more time
sensitive and go home throughout the week. Students should present this folder and its
contents to their parents. Please sign papers marked with a "Parent Signature" request and
return.

D. Star Sheet- Your childs star sheet helps us communicate academic & behavior issues with
you. We want students to take on the responsibility of telling family about stars that were
taken and develop solutions, with support, of how to avoid the choice in the future.
Students that return an unsigned form to school the next day will be asked to take another
star. Upon losing 5 total stars in a semester, students will be assigned an after school
detention.

E. Weekly Blog Our class blogs is online at the Still website. We will update subject area
material and all other things relevant to our classroom through out the week. The URL
address for my classroom blog will be: http://mrbenzin.weebly.com/ Also, make sure to visit
blogs for any other teacher your student has.

F. Class Work/Homework/Agendas- Students will be given classwork to be done in class, but it

may be assigned for homework if not completed while at school. Homework will be given
throughout the week and should be recorded daily in their agendas. Deadline dates will be
based upon the assignment.

G. Honor Roll Each grading period, students have an opportunity to earn this recognition at
the end of the year. Honor Roll is for a student who earn As and Bs in their courses
throughout the year. Specials grades, reading AR goals, & behavior can effect honor roll
eligibility.

H. Dismissal
i. Emergency Dismissal- If there is an Emergency Dismissal, your child will be sent
home as written on the Emergency Dismissal Form. There will not be any exceptions
to the dismissal. ASP will be closed on Emergency Dismissal days.
ii. Afternoon Dismissal Please be advised that all ASP attendance must be prepaid. If
your child is a car rider please place the sign in the drivers side window. Please do
not get out of your car to put your child in the car. We will assist you with this.
Please pull around if you need to help your child fasten his/her seatbelt.

iii. Dismissal Changes- Please send a note for any changes in student's dismissal. After
the start of school, they will need a note or fax to change dismissal (email/phone
changes are not accepted for your child's protection). Students that need to be
checked out early can be signed out until 1:45pm.

I. Building Safety
i. Everyone that enters the building needs to sign-in & sign-out
ii. Please don't hold the door open for other visitors while you enter & exit.

II. Whats Happenin in 5th!

A. Counselors Visits Mrs. Missy Johnson will be visiting our classrooms every 3 weeks to
conduct character lessons relevant to 5th graders. She is also available to speak with
students individually upon request and likes to establish a good rapport with parents who
may have special concerns. Find her email link on our class homepage.

B. 5th Grade Volunteers - Mrs. Grant & Mrs. Johnson are the 5th grade coordinators of the
program that places 5th graders who are meeting classroom requirements into job positions
throughout the school i.e.: news crew, safety patrol, media helper, kindergarten helper,
special needs helper, etc. This is special 5th grade leadership role that we highly encourage
students to take advantage of. Any student may hold one of these positions as long as
expected academic & behavior levels are maintained.

C. 5th Grade Chorus Ms. Talley, our school music teacher, heads this program for all
interested, committed students. Ms. Talley will be sending home information on starting
dates for chorus. All students are welcome. There is a cost associated with the program.
This includes trips, festival fees, music and lunch out once.

D. AR Program- Used to monitor students' independent reading and earn rewards for meeting
reading goals throughout the year. After reading a book, your child will test AR. To have the
book count towards their book goal. Each student must receive a passing score of 80% or
higher on each AR quiz taken with a book in their lexile range.

E. RI- Reading Inventory- The RI is the reading inventory that is used to place your child on a
reading level. The RI will give your child information on their reading level in the form of a
Lexile level. In the future, your child will reference the Lexile level to find books in the library.
The Lexile level is correlated with the AR reading levels. Used for report card below, on, or
above
