Voice of Hoffman shuts off the microphone

Cindy Gulbrandson is retiring after broadcasting
news of Hoffman for 20 years on KMRS.

After 20 years of being the Voice of Hoffman on
KMRS radio, if Cindy Gulbrandson hasnt seen it all, at
least shes shared it all.
Births, deaths, bridal and baby showers, celebrations,
upcoming events, school board meetings, city council
meetings, Commerce and Ag meetings, church services,
school lunch menus, senior lunch menus, whats going
on at the school, whats going on at the senior center - in
short, whats going on in the Hoffman and Kensington
area that makes them typical small towns, and also what
makes them unique.
Cindy admits she isnt quite sure how she became
Hoffmans spokesperson over the local airwaves. To put
it one way, she was drafted.
She had just opened up her Nuts and Bolts quilt shop
in Hoffman when she was called to duty. Ruth Johnson was
retiring from the show and Hoffman needed a new voice.
Maybe the local folks who approached her thought she
had a good radio voice. Maybe they liked her personality.
Ive never thought of myself as having a gift of
gab, Cindy said. Im really an introvert. I would never
listen to myself on the radio. If I did, I might not do it
[the show]. But actually, I dont think its a big deal to
be on the radio.
Since most of her shows were live, phoned in from
her shop on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings
at 9:15, she never even had much of a chance to listen to
herself. But now after 20 years, she will have a chance
to listen - to someone else.
Over a month ago she told the people at KMRS that
she was going to retire from the show, and July 31 would
be her last broadcast. As of last week, though, no one
had stepped up to replace her. Anyone who is interested
should contact the radio station.
Cindy didnt speculate on whether she would continue
for awhile longer if asked. She knows that someone will
come forward.
Although most of her shows were live, on occasion
where else. It harkens back to days when both professions
were more common than they are today.
It was Jeffs idea that they set up shop in the same
building.
Ive loved quilting since high school [where she and
Jeff met], and he suggested, Why not make some money
doing it? she related.
And so the former 4-H coordinator and mother of
four began her new parallel careers, one as a professional
quilt maker and one as an amateur local news and events
broadcaster.
Cindy remembers when she first started listening to
the Hoffman show on KMRS in Morris some 40 years ago.
Dorothy Schultz was the voice of Hoffman back then, to
be followed by Tom Arnquist, and later, Ruth Johnson.
It was Ruth who started announcing birthdays as she
learned of them, and Cindy has carried on that tradition.
The station had one basic guideline: No free advertis-
ing. She was at times, however, able to get in a plug for
