English 2 Syllabus

Overview:
Welcome to English 2! We will be doing many activities this semester, including reading, writing,
discussing, listening, researching, and analyzing. Your active participation will determine your
success in this class.

My Mission Statement:
To encourage you to become critical, creative, and empathetic thinkers.

Supplies:
Pen/Pencil Textbook and books
Notebook Planner (Digital or Paper)
Place to store handouts Kleenex

Expectations:
1. Come to class on time. Tardies are a distraction and deprive you of valuable learning
experiences. Each class period will begin with a writing warm-up. If we get started on
time, we can leave on time.
a. District policy states that your first tardy warrants a student-teacher conference.
Your second and third tardies will be documented, and I will make a phone call
home. After the fourth offense, an office referral will be made.
2. Come with your book(s), writing utensil, and notebook every day. It goes without
saying that English class involves a great deal of reading and writing. You will have a
dedicated English notebook to store your daily work and thoughts. Additionally, we will
be using the MyPerspectives textbook and will be reading from Lord of the Flies, Things
Fall Apart, A Raisin in the Sun, and Macbeth. All of these materials are important and
must be brought to class on a daily basis.
3. Read all assigned texts and turn in all assignments on time. Keeping up with
assignments is critical for having good class discussions, as well as keeping up your
grade. Please keep track of when assignments are due. It is your responsibility to find
out what work you may have missed when you were absent. Make up quizzes and tests
must be scheduled within 2 days. We will have a class website located at
www.powerskatlyn.weebly.com. It will be a great tool for finding assignments, locating
due dates, and communicating with me.
a. Major papers/assignments should be submitted on time. However, they will be
accepted late. If you submit it within five school days, your grade will be reduced
one letter grade from what I determine upon grading. After five school days have
passed, the highest possible grade is a D.
b. Quizzes/exit tickets must be completed when assigned. You are expected to do
presentations on time.
c. To earn credit for daily work, you must complete it on time.

4. Follow our classroom expectations. I enjoy having a good time in my classroom, but
there are a handful of behaviors that I consider unacceptable. You can count on the
following rules.
a. Be respectful, responsible, safe, and there (more on this later). I want you to be
engaged in the material we will be covering. Offensive language is not tolerated.
b. You are not allowed to check or respond to phone calls, emails, texts, etc. on an
electronic device during class. This includes calls from parents. Cell phones and
other electronic devices are only acceptable when I give you specific permission.
c. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If I notice that any work is plagiarized, you will
need to redo the assignment and will only receive partial credit.
5. Ask for help if you have any questions or problems. Please see me if you dont
understand something or if you are having difficulties with any aspect of the class. I am
always happy to meet with you before school, after school, or during my plan period.
6. Have fun! We will be reading and writing about a variety of topics in class. Learning is
so much easier if youre engaged and having a good time. In our class, everyone is
involved in the activities and discussions. Even when the work gets difficult, keep in mind
that you are constantly growing and learning. I will do my best to make this class
enjoyable.
