NINETEENTH DAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In the Gospel this Sunday, we see a beautiful

interaction between Peter and Jesus.

Lord! Save me! he [Peter] cried. Jesus put out

his hand at once and held him.

Peter was a big, tough, macho, man. He was in

danger of death. His bravado made him take the
risk of walking our across the water to Jesus. His
lack of faith when feeling the force of the wind
caused him to sink. Jesus held him. Sometimes,
we need Jesus to hold us.
Like Peter, Jesus invites us to walk with him on
the water of faith. We all have ideas about what way of life can bring us happiness. Walking
on the water of faith can seem an impossible path to happiness: forsaking fame, wealth,
material pleasures, our valuable time, energy, and sometimes even good physical pleasures
such as sleep, sex, or food.

When we make the determined decision to walk on the water of faith, to commit ourselves
to living Jesus desire for us, and not our own desires, we will experience strong winds.
These winds might be financial pressures, challenges from our best friends, family, or
husbands/wives/partners, strong emotional or physical desires, aggression from society on
matters of sexual ethics, marriage, or gender. These things can cause us to sink in our faith.
Remember: Dont tell God how big your storm is; tell your storm how big your God is!

Jesus is bigger than any storm. He will help you through it. If you are sinking, he will be your
lifeguard. He will stretch out his hand, and hold you. In our determination to walk in faith,
sometimes we need to admit our human weaknesses and ask him to hold us. Thats ok. The
times we sink are opportunities to experience Jesus as our friend and personal saviour. A
friend who loves to hold us when we are sinking, and who gives us courage to get up. Lets
not Lego of Jesus in times when we are sinking.
