The International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) brings

outstanding secondary school teachers from around the globe to the United
States to further develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their
teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States.
Recognizing the transformative power of an effective teacher, ILEP equips Fellows with enhanced teaching

methodologies, lesson planning techniques, teaching strategies for their home environments, leadership abilities,

and technology skills through targeted coursework, intensive training, and collaboration with colleagues from

around the globe. Field experience at a secondary school complements the coursework and actively engages

Fellows with American teachers and students. Upon successful completion of the program, eligible alumni may

compete for small grants to implement self-designed projects that benefit and empower their home schools and

communities.

Goals

Build lasting relationships that promote international understanding and collaboration between U.S. and

international teachers and students.

Provide in-service professional development to enhance teachers expertise in their teaching disciplines and

equip them with a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, and the

use of technology in education.

Contribute to improving teaching in participating countries by preparing participants to serve as teacher

leaders, equipped to apply and share their experience and skills with their colleagues and students upon

returning home.
Project Activities

Teacher Training: ILEP Fellows participate in a semester-long academic program at U.S. universities that

includes coursework and intensive training in teaching methodologies, curriculum development, and the use of

technology in the classroom. ILEP Fellows also audit two existing graduate level courses at their host universities

to build professional knowledge. Combined, these components give Fellows the tools and resources to develop a
culminating Professional Development Module a one-day training designed for their teacher colleagues. These

Modules serve as a resource to enhance teaching and learning in their home schools and communities.

Field Experience: ILEP Fellows participate in field experience at a U.S. secondary school where they are

actively immersed in the American classroom environment and build collaborative, lasting connections with U.S.

teachers and students.

Alumni Programming: Through the Alumni Small Grants program, IREX encourages alumni to leverage their

experience and knowledge, put their ideas into action, and create change. ILEP alumni are eligible to compete for

alumni grant funding for activities or projects designed to benefit their home schools and communities. Alumni

may implement a variety of education projects either as individuals or in collaboration with fellow program alumni

or U.S. colleagues. ILEP alumni also become part of a large online global community of teachers that enables

It is great to recognize
It is great to recognize that Fulbright-AMINEF scholarship was a Golden
Gate for my academic, intellectual, and social career. Thanks to the
Fulbright scholarship, I was able to complete my Masters at Columbia
University and won its multi-year president fellowship for my PhD
program and later was again granted another Fulbright for writing up my
dissertation until I completed my advanced studies in 1992. Further has
been beyond imagination. I was able not only to grow my stature, but
also become a 'bridge' between Indonesia and U.S. During meetings in
the post-Nine Eleven with U.S. high dignitaries such as President Bush,
Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, Paul Wolfowitz and
many others, I was able to convey the messages of peace between
Indonesia-the Muslim world on the one hand and U.S.-the West on the
other. I strongly believe, the peaceful future of the world very much
depends on greater understanding and appreciation all people. I wish to
pay a great tribute to Fulbright-AMINEF. The even best of all is yet to
come. (Azyumardi Azra, 1986 and 1991 Fulbright graantees; former
President, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN), Jakarta;
Deputy for Social Welfare, RI Vice-President Office (2007-9); and
currently Director, Graduate School, UIN Jakarta).

A tremendous opportunity
From the beginning, Fulbright gives me a tremendous opportunity to reach
my study objectives. It turns out that not only does Fulbright support me to
study at my favorite university, program, and professor, but it also
enlarges my perspective both as a scholar and, more importantly, as a
human being. Having all these privileges constantly reminds me how I
must keep myself be part of ongoing enlightening mission for the
betterment of society. (Andi Irawan, 2008 Fulbright student; PhD
student candidate in Urban and Regional Planning, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign; home institution: Surabaya University).

Today, advance technology allows us to study

Today, advance technology allows us to study various subjects through
online learning facilities. Some universities also offer long distance
programs with fully accredited degrees. Fulbright provided me with
more than opportunity to pursue study and obtain a graduate degree. It
gave me exposure to different cultures; hands-on experience in various
projects; and opportunities to interact with greatest minds. Altogether it
built my self-confidence; improved my interpersonal skills; and brushed up
my leadership skills; ergo a spark of wisdom that I wouldnt have obtained
otherwise. (Angger Wibowo, 2002 Fulbright student to Washington State
University; Assistant Country Director, Head of Planning Monitoring
and Evaluation Unit, UNDP Jakarta)

I was a lucky faculty member

I was a lucky faculty member when Fulbright sent me to the Ohio State
University in 1988 for my Masters degree. It opened my eyes wider and
wider since the first day I arrived in Columbus. Within two years
Fulbright dramatically changed my life from just a lecturer to a lecturer
plus. The intention to write academic work could not be resisted
anymore since then. I was fortunate enough to have two other Fulbright
grants to do research. I can't stop sharing my Fulbright years with my
young, unexperienced students to inspire them. Go head Fulbright.
(Bambang Cipto, Professor of Political Science, Muhammadiyah
University in Yogyakarta; the Ohio State University, 1988-1990, and
Arizona State University 1997, 2003)

two most valuable experiences in life

If I were to list down two most valuable experiences in life, top of mind
would be a) being a father and b) being a Fulbright scholar. By the first, I
gain greater responsibility and love for the family, while in the latter I gain
broader network and connectivity with the inter-connected Fulbright world
and its supporting institutions. In my case, I happened to experience
both at almost the same time. Having had to leave my 2 week-old new born
daughter, I flew off to Pullman in time for the fall semester of my MBA
program at Washington State University. My first month was then shocked
by the tragic 9/11 event devastating people all around the world. I managed
to complete my MBA studies with flying colors in the following 18
months, as friends, colleagues and the Fulbright community gave ongoing
tremendous support. Until today, I continue to feel blessed for this
unbeatable Fulbright journey which I believe has humbly lead me into
becoming a better person. (Bobby B. Suadi, 2001 Fulbright studentl;
currently Windows Business Group Lead at Microsoft Indonesia)

We don't understand peace until we lost it
We don't understand peace until we lost it. A major evidence that
disrupted social, economic, and humanity balance is the terrorist attacks in
many countries. We lost peace, we are uprooted from our very existence.
Foundation of peace is not love but equality, respect and acceptance.

University; during 9/11 Attacs, Bali Bombing, Jakarta Marriott

Director, Microsoft Indonesia)

Fulbright Program gave me the pass-ticket

Not only to learn but how to learn, not only to succeed but how to be
successful. The opportunity given by the Fulbright Program is not only to
learn science, knowledge and technology in the U.S., but more also to
provide me with character building and life values achievement journey.
As a Fulbrighter in 2002, I have acquired more than just a masters
degree. Life in a heterogeneous society makes us wiser in behaving and
taking decision. Chicago gives almost the entire real illustration of
American life. Regularity and orderliness of its society give a distinct
color to the American culture. The picture that the Americans are
egoistic individualists hardly ever I encountered. American Nation in
reality is indeed a friendly society, who is always ready to assist and give
opportunity to others. They are by no means arrogant, the impression that
people had before they experienced living in the U.S. by themselves. An
appreciation to differing opinions represents the root of the American
society.

Fulbright Program gave me the pass-ticket to continue my study at

Padjadjaran University earning my Doctoral degree in Cyber and
Telecommunications Law in 2009; in addition, I have been entrusted to
be one of Commissioners of the Indonesian Telecommunications
Regulatory Authority (BRTI) under the supervison of the Ministry of
Communication and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.
I have also been involved in the legislation process of the Indonesian
Cyber Law Act (UU ITE) and been member of the Indonesian Delegation
to such international conferences as International Telecommunications
Union (ITU) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Being
a Fulbrighter actually is not a destination of success, it is a great lifetime
journey. (Danrivanto Budhijanto, 2002 Fulbright student, Master of
Information Technology Law Program at the John Marshall Law School-
Chicago; Associate Professor at Padjadjaran University School of Law-
Bandung; and Arbitrator in Indonesian National Arbitration Board-BANI)

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant is the program

that I would keep
Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant is the program that I would
keep in my mind and heart for good. Being here in America and teaching
Indonesian. Being exposed to American culture changes most of my
perception about Americans. In addition, I have the chance to taste
international life, meeting with people from all around the world, share
points of view, share Ideas, and share knowledge. The more I am
engrossed with international experience the more I love my country. I learn
my own language and culture more than ever before. Something that I have
always taken for granted before. Thank you, Fulbright. It is truly an
honor to be a part of this program. (Dewantoro Ratri, 2010 FLTA to
University of Georgia; teacher at MAN Amanatul Ummah high school in
Surabaya)

I found the Fulbright program to be very enriching

I found the Fulbright program to be very enriching, not only intellectually
but also culturally. The experience provided me with a greater
understanding of the true meaning of life as well as deeper appreciation for
all things different. I treasure my years as a Fulbright scholar, and enjoy
every minute revisiting the U.S., which I have considered as my second
home. Despite the tragic occurrence of September 11 and the unfolding
political drama that ensued, I still believe in the American spirit, which to
me reflects generosity, humility and inclusivity. The Fulbright program has
made me the human that I am today. Each time I happily reflect on my
Fulbright days, I tend to increase my sense of 'being'. (Dicky Sofjan,
Ph.D., Faculty Member, American Studies Graduate Program, Gadjah
Mada University, Yogyakarta; Political Science, Northeastern University,
Boston, 1999-2001)

The experience of studying and living
The experience of studying and living in the US had been for me an
invaluable part of my life. What makes this experience invaluable is the
opportunity that were opened to me to not only study many new academic
perspectives at school where I formally enrolled for the last two years but
to learn many lessons of life outside of schoolboth through and with my
friends of the same university and through and with American community
in general. This learning process is a two-way one: I was not only being
taught and educated by external factors surrounding me, but also I helped
shaping the community where I lived and interacted with. I was not only
the object of my education, but also was the subject with capacity to
influence my surroundings. (Dono Sunardi, 2009 Fulbright student to Clark
University; Universitas Mulawarman, Samarinda).

Dono Sunardi

Obviously it gives me the opportunity to pursue

At a personal level, obviously it gives me the opportunity to pursue a
higher education degree which opened to an extraordinary door of
opportunities. But beyond that, what is more important to me is the
network of many people from different background, races, religions,
countries which really shift my paradigm to really get that, in the end of the
day, collaboration and partnership can only be made through a mutual
respect of humanity and connection among real people. Not based on
prejudice and stereotype of certain country/race/religion which usually
shaped our mindset based on our limited understanding through media and
anecdotes. It gives me hope and a totally optimisic view of the future...

Process Improvement Consultant for Variance Reduction International,
Inc.).

The Fulbright program was a 'precious'

The Fulbright program was a 'precious' experience that facilitated not only
my professional development but also my whole being as an individual.
The program opened up my horizon as a scholar and as a human being.
I could not have been more glad to have the opportunity to participate in
the program. (Luciana, 2007 Fulbright dissertation research grantee to
the University of Hawaii; Atmajaya Catholic University, Jakarta)

Fulbright changed my life

Fulbright changed my life. Without the scholarship, I would not have
been where I am right now. For me it was the gate to the world, which
stretched from life-long individual friendship to professional collaboration
and institutional networking. Through its multiplying effect, I believe the
Fulbright program has brought about social transformation. In another,
more personal level, the Fulbright experience changed the way I relate to
the U.S.A. I might disagree and be very critical with the U.S. foreign
policy, but I will always hold dear the struggle of American people in
redefining themselves and reaching for their dream. (Melani
Budianta, Professor of literary studies, Faculty of Humanities, University
of Indonesia, Fulbright grantee in 1980-1981, 1988-1992).

Having the experience as a Fulbrighter was truly...

Having the experience as a Fulbrighter was truly an unforgettable one for
me. America turned to be a different story afterward. I was there right on
the 9/11 tragedy. I was a Moslem with the same name as the primary
suspect of the attack--Mohammed Atta. Yet I was surprised there was no
negative impact on me in the society whatsoever. No offensive words,
conducts, etc. I remained their friend regardless of my religion, my name. I
felt completely safe among them. I was then drawn into the nationwide
sadness that they felt. Later, I discovered that the population of American
Moslem is among the largest in the world. I slowly understood the beauty
of American multicultural society, the society maturing after hundreds of
years of painful process. I found this nation as a friendly and warm nation
regardless of their political standing. As a Moslem, I will always respect
them. As an Indonesian, I will always be their friend. (Mohamad
Adriyanto, 2002 Fulbright student in Human Resource Management at The
University of Akron, now working at SMK TI High School Airlangga,
Samarinda, East Kalimantan)

My journey to the U.S. is a discovery in many senses
My journey to the U.S. is a discovery in many senses. I discovered my true
potentials and dreams that I never thought I had in me. I unraveled the
many American personalities whom I find fascinating and dear to my heart
forever. But most surprising of all, I discovered my love to my own
country in an objective but constructive way and the many ways how I can
contribute whatever I learned during my journey to the U.S. to the
improvement of my country. Fulbright is the key element that made it
possible for me in discovering all of those. (Neny Isharyanti, 2003
Fulbright student to Iowa State University; home institution: Satya
Wacana Christian University, Salatiga)

My two years in Atlanta taught me

My two years in Atlanta taught me to be both academically and culturally
mature. Not only that, Fulbright opened the door to more opportunities.
Being a Fulbright awardee leveraged my presence in the U.S. and
introduced me to many respected people in their field of expertise, of
whom some made my current studying at Harvard, with a full scholarship
from Harvard, possible. A Fulbrighter experience is definitely one that I
would recommend anyone to have. If you happen to think about
applying, please do apply. Otherwise, please do think about it. (Panji
Fortuna Hadisoemarto, 2007 Fulbright student to Georgia State University;
currently a Doctor of Science candidate at Harvard School of Public
Health. Back home he is faculty member at Padjadjaran University,
Bandung).

(FLTA) program gives much influence

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program gives
much influence on how I perceive myself, my culture, my country, and the
global world. It offers broad opportunity to build a better intercultural
understanding as well as improve foreign language teaching skills. It arises
the awareness that language can't be separated from culture and that culture
can't be assessed from only one perspective. Also, this program is a great
opportunity to connect with people from different places and background.
By joining this program, I become more aware and more confident in
performing myself with the identities that I have, especially as an
Indonesian and as a teacher. (Entusiastik, 2010 FLTA to Johns Hopkins
University)

Fulbright has opened the door to many other opportunities

Fulbright has opened the door to many other opportunities. On my return
after the Global Undergraduate program that I participated in 2008, I have
been selected to be one of the Indonesia delegates to International
conference such as UNESCO International Youth Conference 2009, Asia
Africa Youth Forum 2010, UN Comparative Study of MDGs Achievement
2010, International Youth Conference on Climate Change, Directorate
General of Higher Education (DIKTI) program on Activisit Study to
Indians Top Universities in 2009, and Youth Leaders for Indonesia by
Indonesia McKinsey and Co. The above opportunities are a clear
indication that Fulbright had significantly enriched my chances for being a
better person and having a better future ... the most important thing is that
since my return to Indonesia, I feel the nationalism is getting stronger in
my deepest heart .. singing the national anthem and other national songs, I
cant help shedding tears from the corners of my eyes because I am proud
to be an Indonesian. (Rini Mayasari Imron Zaini, Global Undergraduate
Student Program of 2008 to California State University; English
Department, Sriwijaya University, Palembang)

Community College Initiative Program had given me the

opportunity
Community College Initiative Program had given me the opportunity to
grow as an individual, enrich my knowledge and skill at the same time.
It was the best two years in my entire life. Academic and non
academic achievements, organizational and leadership skill, internship and
community service, socializing with American society, bonding with all
grantees from other countries who participated in this program, meeting
countless international students, had changed me in so many good ways as
a human being. My eyes are open wide, so is my heart, and my mind. I
experienced the difference and was inspired to make a difference. My
love for Indonesia is escalating. It is so true that USA is a land of
opportunity. It is land of free and home of the brave. The most
amazing outcomes are friendship and peace around the world. I believe
everyone who participated in this program could not agree more that
friendship and peace are not difficult to achieve when everyone looks for
similarity other than differences (Mutia Herlina, 2009 Community College
Initiative Program, Kirkwood Community College; AMINEF
EducationUSA adviser)
