Cambridge Inspires Students and Future Publishing Professionals at World Book Day 2017

Dear Katherine,
Did you know that Cambridge University Press (CUP) was one of the first publishers to

ever offer apprenticeships in the UK? I saw that you are planning to cover a series on how young

people can break into the publishing industry. Our upcoming World Book Day event is quite

relevant and could make an excellent story for The Bookseller.

On World Book Day, Thursday 2 March, Cambridge University Press will open to

students from local secondary schools for a careers speed-networking carousel with staff.

Students will explore different areas of publishing including: communications, design, editorial,

legal, marketing, procurement, sales and technology. The day will also include insights into

apprenticeships and graduate schemes as an entre to the publishing world.

Based in Cambridge, Heidi Mulvey is our Global Head of Community Engagement,

where she organizes events and community programs such as World Book Day to create and

seed relationships between our communities and Cambridge University Press.

Ms. Mulvey can speak extensively about how Cambridge offers many opportunities for

young people. She formed our partnership with Form the Future, an organization which brings

schools and businesses together. The result - students are challenged to think broadly and

1
divergently about career options and pathways. In particular, Ms. Mulvey can discuss how

technology is changing publishing at an unprecedented rate and the digital skills young people

possess can make a real difference. According to the Publishers Association, 2016 was a record

breaking year in the UK for the publishing industry with sales of books and journals reaching

4.8bn, their highest ever level. Overall digital sales in the UK increased by 6% to 1.7bn and

accounted for 35% of total revenues.
