My Fellow Rotarians,
T
he month of August is Membership
month in our Rotary calendar. Each
one of us has our own classification
as Rotarians. I joined the Rotary with
Thrift Banking as my classification. In my
profession as a banker, I can share and
help the club with my financial/banking
expertise. Every Club member has his/
her own field of expertise and combining
them all, we definitely can make that great
difference in our community. Our chosen
vocations allow us to help other people live
better, safer, and healthierjust like the
service we do in Rotary.

Last Rotary meeting started promptly at
12:15nn.
We had an attendance of 16 Rotarians
and 2 non Rotarians including our guest
speaker. Six of our Club members, upon
the invitation of Rotary Club of Manila
Bay (RCMB), through its President
Bong Cruz, went to Manila to attend its
22nd Anniversary and 23rd Induction
Ceremonies in Pasay City. The 6 Club
members were President Joaqui Bucoy,
Vice-Pres. Arman Lorenzo, PP Eric
Harina, PP Jun Kwan, PP Edwin To and
the Editor-in-Chief of our Vinta Weekly
Club Bulletin Rtn. Vince Carbon. A
Club Sisterhood Agreement was forged
between our Rotary Club of Zamboanga
City and Rotary Club of Manila Bay.
communities, in our clubs, we are touching
the lives of people we do not even know
through our vocations. Our combined ideas
germinating from our classifications allow
us the opportunity to come up with projects
that are responsive to changing social and
economic patterns. These are projects that
make lives of our fellowmen better.
I call upon my fellow club members to share
your expertise and ideas so our Club become
responsive to the needs of our communities
through better and quality projects. It does
not matter if it is small, medium or large
collective undertaking so long as it will be
sustainable, and can make a difference to
our community.
Our guest speaker was Dr. Cathy
Fernandez-Garcia. She spoke about the
adverse effects of cigarette smoking. It
was a very timely topic as our beloved
City, through the City Health Office, is
celebrating Lung Month this August. Dr.
Fernandez-Garcia reiterated strongly
that cigarette smoking is one of the
leading causes of deaths. There were
a healthy number of questions posed
after the presentation. Dir. Justin Paber
delivered an equally strong response.
Finally, Dr. Cathy Fernandez-Garcia
extended an invitation to our Club to
join them on August 24 at WMSU at
8am for the lung month activity.
The meeting ended at exactly 1:30pm.

 RCZC AND RCMB
CLUB SISTERHOOD
AGREEMENT

A
Club Sisterhood Agreement
was inked between the
Rotary Club of Zamboanga
City (RCZC) and the Rotary Club
of Manila Bay (RCMB) last August
3, 2017 at The Pergola win Pasay
City. Our Club President Joaqui
Bucoy signed the agreement and
witnessed by our Club Vice-Pres.
Arman Lorenzo. For RCMB, Club
President Bong Cruz and Club PE
Anna Uy affixed their signatures.
Also present during the signing of the
agreement were PDG Jude Doctora
of the Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod,
PP Eric Harina, PP Jun Kwan, PP
Edwin To, and Rtn. Vince Carbon.
With the Club Sisterhood Agreement
duly signed by both parties, the two
Rotary Clubs look forward in putting
into practice Rotarys eternal motto of
Service Above Self .

irtually all membership
in Rotary is based upon a
classification. Basically
a classification describes the
distinct and recognized business
or professional service that the
Rotarian renders to society. The
principle of Rotary classification is
somewhat more specific and precise.
In determining the classification of a
Rotarian it is necessary to look at the
principal or recognized business
or professional activity of the firm,
company or institution with which
an active member is connected or
that which covers his principal and
recognized business or professional
activity. It should be clearly
understood that classifications are
determined by activities or services
to society rather than by the position
held by a particular individual.
In other words, if a person is the
president of a bank, he or she is not
classified as bank president but
under the classification banking.
The classification principle also
permits businesses and industries
to be separated into distinct
functions such as manufacturing,
distributing, retailing and servicing.
Classifications may also be specified

as distinct and independent divisions
of a large corporation or university
within the clubs territory, such
as a school of business or a school
of engineering. The classification
principle is a necessary concept
in assuring that each Rotary club
represents a cross section of the
business and professional service
of the community. Members are
permitted admission if they are
retired, and who had never been
in Rotary but would have been
qualified. These individuals can be
admitted as past service members
and are the only Rotarians without a
current or former classification.
Limitations. This club shall not elect
a person to active membership from
a classification if it will not result in
the classification making up more
than 10 percent of the clubs active
membership.

SELECTED TO BE 2019-20 ROTARY PRESIDENT

Maloney,
of the Rotary
Club of Decatur,
Alabama, USA,
is the selection of
the Nominating
Committee for
President of Rotary
International
for 2019-20. He
will be declared
the president-nominee on 1 October if no
challenging candidates have been suggested.
The clubs are where Rotary happens, says
Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support
and strengthen clubs at the community
level, preserve Rotarys culture as a service-
oriented membership organization, and test
new regional approaches for growth.
With the eradication of polio, recognition
for Rotary will be great and the opportunities
will be many, he says. We have the potential
to become the global powerhouse for doing
good.
Maloney is a principal in the law firm of
Blackburn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC,
with a focus on taxation, estate planning,
and agricultural law. He represents large
farming operations in the Southeastern and
Midwestern United States, and has chaired
the American Bar Associations Committee
on Agriculture in the section of taxation.
He is a member of the American Bar
Association, Alabama State Bar Association,
and the Alabama Law Institute.
He has been active in Decaturs religious
community, chairing his churchs finance
council and a local Catholic school board.
He has also served as president of the
Community Foundation of Greater Decatur,
chair of Morgan County Meals on Wheels,
and director of the United Way of Morgan
County and the Decatur-Morgan County
Chamber of Commerce.
A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served
as an RI director; trustee and vice chair of
The Rotary Foundation; presidents aide;
zone coordinator; and a leader on the
Future Vision and 2014 Sydney Convention
Committees. He serves on the Operations
Review Committee and has served on the
Rotary Peace Centers Committee. He has
received the Rotary Foundation Citation
for Meritorious Service and Distinguished
Service Award. Maloney and his wife, Gay,
are Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and
