Lyrical Waltz and Gavotte from Dances of the Dolls Op. 7 by Dimitri Shostakovich

Dimitri Shostakovich was 20th century Soviet composer and pianist, who was known mostly to write
repertoire for upper intermediate players. Though he was known for that rep, in 1953 the suite Dances
of the Dolls was compiled to make a suite of piano pieces that contained excerpts from his larger Ballet
Suites. The first two movements; Lyrical Waltz and Gavotte are based off of the two familiar dance
styles. In the pieces it is easy to hear how the styles were translated to mirror the delicate movements
of a doll.
