The bold theorY of hofessors
A.Kazantsev and B.IePunov that
a space shiP crashed in Siberia
in a9O8 continues to j-nterest
scientists all over the wor-Ld'
Early in ,the morning of June 30, 1908, the inhabitantsof Cenhal Siberia
witnessoda strangs sight. A blazing mass streaked across the sky, leaving a
misty trail behind. Thero was an sarth-shattering explosion in the region ol the
Podkamennaya Tunguska River which wrought havoc wer a vast area of taiga.
Leonid Kulik, a Soviet scienist, was the lirst to study the siie of the
meteorite's la,ll. This was back in 1927. He saw hundreds upon hun-
dreds of lallen trees in an area where ihe "visitor" frorn outer space was
supposed to have fallen. Kulik kept coming back to the region, yet he was
u n a b l to mmp l e te h i s study,' for he was killed dur ing the Second W or l d
War.
Scientistsworking on the "biography" ol this heavenlybody have evolved
dozens of hypothesesconcerningit. Som say the Erth collided with a small
comet, others contend this was an attemptby boings from othr planetsto bom_
bard the Earth with atomic shells. Alexander Kazantsev,a popular Soviet sci-
encefiction writer, has proposed a bold theory. He says the catasrropnewas
causd by the explosion of a space ship during an attempt to land on the
Ea r t h.
In th past lew years,a vast region surroundingthe site has been explored.
Though the expeditionswere not able to lmte the crater of the exprosron,
they tound that the soil and the trs trunks in the entire area were radioactive.
This gave grounds lor concluding that an atomic oxplosionoccurred in lhe air
when lhe heavenlybody approachedthe Earth's surlace,
We hope lhat the further eflorts of scientistswill bring about a tinal
solution to th mysteryof the visitor trom outer space. The site of
