Fall, 2017
Headlines
Welcome to the beginning of Fall. This is such a great time of year as the
season starts to turn. We have a number of new things happening around
here.

First, Kareen has resigned from her position here and is now working as a
teacher at a local school. We wish her all the best in her new endeavour.

Second, April will be returning from her maternity leave in October. We are
looking forward to having her back at work.

Our downtown space is open again on Tuesday and Wednesdays every week from 9-3, starting
September 5th. Lots of families missed having this space open all summer, but its hard to maintain
2 spaces when staff get holidays.

Before the end of this year, we will have our new website launch. For a variety of reasons it has
taken a bit of time to get it looking and functioning like we want. We think you will like the new and
vibrant website.

This fall has found us with a couple of new Board members. Thank you! However, we could still
use some more. If you are interested on being the Board or part of our Indoor Playground Cleaning
Committee, please contact a staff for more information.

Enjoy the last quarter of 2017!!

Triple P - Positive Parenting Program
As we return to our regular routines in the fall, sometimes its good to
have some tips around getting to our activities, work and school on time.
Professor Matt Sanders has written a great article below on this topic. If
you would like any additional information or would like some support in
your parenting journey, please call 780 672-0141 and we can help you
with that.

Getting Out the Door on Time

By Professor Matt Sanders

For many families the morning rush hour is the most stressful part of the day. So how can you and
the kids get out the door on time?

The key is organization.

Get yourself ready first, before your child. To avoid last minute rushing prepare some things the
night before and go to bed at a reasonable hour so youll wake early enough.

I also recommend against having the television on in the morning. Better to make sure the children
are dressed before breakfast. Perhaps when they are fully ready you can turn the television on then.

Let your child know ahead of time that youll be going out and explain exactly what the days
activities will be and their time requirements.

Younger children can learn the importance of organization by doing things for themselves. Teaching
children to get dressed by themselves is a chance to practice independent skills and it also saves
you time.

You may like to try the beat the clock game. Your childs goal is to be ready before the alarm clock
sounds off. If your child wins, he earns a small treat or reward, such as a favourite snack in his
lunch box.

Tell your child exactly what tasks he must do to be ready to leave and thus win the reward. Make
sure you set the timer for a reasonable amount of time and avoid giving repeated instructions or
nagging your child to hurry up.

Often it will only take a two-week period of beating the clock before the rewards and the clock are
phased out. Remember to always praise your childs achievements in learning better organization.

Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program. To find out more

Resources for Families - Ages and Stages Questionnaires and
Social Emotional Questionnaires
Are you curious about your child's development?
The first six years of a child's life are extremely important to their development and
while each child develops at their own unique pace, we can sometimes find
ourselves wondering, is my child's development on track?
We offer the Ages and Stages Questionnaire for parents to use to give themselves a
snapshot of their childs development. The engaging questionnaires are interactive
and promote positive, developmentally appropriate play.

What Is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire?

A simple and fun questionnaire designed with specific questions based on a child's development in
the following areas:
Fine Motor Problem Solving Communication Personal-Social Gross Motor

What Is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire-SE?

The Ages and Stages SE asks specific questions based on the child's social/emotional development
in the following areas:
Self Regulation Compliance Communication Adaptive Functioning
Autonomy Affective interaction with people

Why should I do a questionnaire?

Learn what to expect from your child at different
developmental stages
Learn fun and new activities to engage in with your child
Learn when and where to receive support to ensure your
child meets their developmental milestones

When can I start using the questionnaire with my child?

The questionnaires range from 2 months to 5 years of age.
It is recommended that a questionnaire be completed one or two times a year; unless there is a
particular area of concern that you want to track. Activity Sheets are also available to support
healthy development and growth in specific areas of development throughout the year.
Where can I get and complete a questionnaire?
Please ask a staff member to help you, they will determine the correct
questionnaire to use as well as answer any questions you may have.
You can complete the questionnaire in the comfort of your own home;
or use our Indoor Playground/Discovery Room and resources. Our toy
lending library is also available to take home different toys geared
towards the different developmental stages.

Roots of Empathy
How do you grow a more caring and peaceful society?
You create better citizens. Citizens who recognize the
needs of others as equal to their own. Its simple really.
Simple enough for the youngest children to learn. Basic
enough for a baby to teach. Thats Roots of Empathy.
Roots of Empathy (ROE) is an award winning, evidence
based program that has shown dramatic effect in reducing
levels of aggression and violence among school children,
while raising social/emotional competence and increasing
empathy.
In Camrose and the surrounding area there are several programs
running out of most of the schools in the Battle River School District.
Though it varies from school to school Roots Of Empathy is taught in
Kindergarten through grade seven. Programs begin in October with
infants being between the ages of 2 4 months.
For more information on the Roots Of Empathy program see
www.rootsofempathy.org or contact Lorraine Bell at 780-673-3008

Resources for Families -Taking Action on Bullying Program

The project is a partnership between Alberta Education and Alberta Human Services. The focus of
the project is to provide families and schools not only information and strategies to effectively deal
with bullying behavior but to work with the Camrose Parent Link Centre to empower and strengthen
families in an effort to target prevention.

Currently, the Taking Action on Bullying program is at Round Hill School providing:
In-class lessons on bullying education and prevention, and individual and family support.
Recess supervision, peer mentor groups, student leadership training, staff consultations
and support.

The project is also at the Camrose Family Resource Centre providing:

Workshops for families, family consultations and support regarding bullying, resource
information.
Assist with Camrose Family Resource Centre parent groups, group presentations to both the
community at large and to other schools.

The Taking Action on Bullying project intention is to not only

share effective strategies to deal with current bullying situations
but to take a preventative role by offering/facilitating parent/
caregiver workshops and groups which strive to assist in
building their connection with their child.

Loose Parts
Have you ever spent $50 on a toy only to have your child play with the box instead? Wondered
why? Well, children usually prefer play that stimulates their curiosity and gives free reign to their
imagination and creativity.
We believe that one of the best ways to enhance their natural curiosity is to introduce a wide variety
of the materials that we call loose parts into their play settings. Children can carry, combine, line
up, redesign, take apart, and put loose parts back together in almost endless ways. The materials
come with no specific set of directions, and they can be used alone or combined with a variety of
other materials.
With loose parts, children become more creative and flexible in their thinking, develop social
competence and new ways to process information while satisfying their ever-growing curiosity and
love for learning.
The Discovery Room will be transformed into a Loose Parts play area every
Thursday 8:30-3:30 starting Sept 14.
Come explore, create and discover the possibilities with your children!

Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition
What does our coalition do?

Our Coalition engages families, community members and organizations on behalf of young children
(prenatal to six years). Coalition members keep early childhood on the forefront by raising public
awareness about the importance of the early years, and to help identify community needs, gaps,
and issues in order to improve supports for young children and their families.

By working together we can help all children reach their full potential as they prepare for
kindergarten.

Preschool Readiness Bags

Watch for us in Tofield, Bashaw, City
and County of Camrose this fall.
These bags are put together to give
opportunities to preschool age children
to explore and enhance their skills
needed for school readiness.

The Early Development Instrument (EDI) and how its

being used in Alberta

The Early Development Instrument (EDI) gauges how

populations of young children are developing. The EDI
is being used by Alberta Education to help Albertans
better understand how their young children are doing,
and how we can work together to give them a good
start in life. By allowing your child to take part in the
EDI you are helping provide valuable information that is
helping to shape a better future for children in your
community and beyond.
