First, Kareen has resigned from her position here and is now working as a
teacher at a local school. We wish her all the best in her new endeavour.
Second, April will be returning from her maternity leave in October. We are
looking forward to having her back at work.
Our downtown space is open again on Tuesday and Wednesdays every week from 9-3, starting
September 5th. Lots of families missed having this space open all summer, but its hard to maintain
2 spaces when staff get holidays.
Before the end of this year, we will have our new website launch. For a variety of reasons it has
taken a bit of time to get it looking and functioning like we want. We think you will like the new and
vibrant website.
This fall has found us with a couple of new Board members. Thank you! However, we could still
use some more. If you are interested on being the Board or part of our Indoor Playground Cleaning
Committee, please contact a staff for more information.

Triple P - Positive Parenting Program
As we return to our regular routines in the fall, sometimes its good to
have some tips around getting to our activities, work and school on time.
Professor Matt Sanders has written a great article below on this topic. If
you would like any additional information or would like some support in
your parenting journey, please call 780 672-0141 and we can help you
with that.
For many families the morning rush hour is the most stressful part of the day. So how can you and
the kids get out the door on time?
Get yourself ready first, before your child. To avoid last minute rushing prepare some things the
night before and go to bed at a reasonable hour so youll wake early enough.
I also recommend against having the television on in the morning. Better to make sure the children
are dressed before breakfast. Perhaps when they are fully ready you can turn the television on then.
Let your child know ahead of time that youll be going out and explain exactly what the days
activities will be and their time requirements.
Younger children can learn the importance of organization by doing things for themselves. Teaching
children to get dressed by themselves is a chance to practice independent skills and it also saves
you time.
You may like to try the beat the clock game. Your childs goal is to be ready before the alarm clock
sounds off. If your child wins, he earns a small treat or reward, such as a favourite snack in his
lunch box.
Tell your child exactly what tasks he must do to be ready to leave and thus win the reward. Make
sure you set the timer for a reasonable amount of time and avoid giving repeated instructions or
nagging your child to hurry up.
Often it will only take a two-week period of beating the clock before the rewards and the clock are
phased out. Remember to always praise your childs achievements in learning better organization.

Roots of Empathy
How do you grow a more caring and peaceful society?
You create better citizens. Citizens who recognize the
needs of others as equal to their own. Its simple really.
Simple enough for the youngest children to learn. Basic
enough for a baby to teach. Thats Roots of Empathy.
Roots of Empathy (ROE) is an award winning, evidence
based program that has shown dramatic effect in reducing
levels of aggression and violence among school children,
while raising social/emotional competence and increasing
empathy.
In Camrose and the surrounding area there are several programs
running out of most of the schools in the Battle River School District.
Though it varies from school to school Roots Of Empathy is taught in
Kindergarten through grade seven. Programs begin in October with
infants being between the ages of 2 4 months.
For more information on the Roots Of Empathy program see
www.rootsofempathy.org or contact Lorraine Bell at 780-673-3008
(downtown location)
Currently, the Taking Action on Bullying program is at Round Hill School providing:
In-class lessons on bullying education and prevention, and individual and family support.
Recess supervision, peer mentor groups, student leadership training, staff consultations
and support.
Twin Time
Are you a family with twins? Are you expecting twins?
Please join us one Saturday a month to meet with other parents of twins to share knowledge and
strategies, ask questions, and get in some adult interaction.
Bring your twins and siblings. See page 10 for details.

Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition
What does our coalition do?
Our Coalition engages families, community members and organizations on behalf of young children
(prenatal to six years). Coalition members keep early childhood on the forefront by raising public
awareness about the importance of the early years, and to help identify community needs, gaps,
and issues in order to improve supports for young children and their families.
By working together we can help all children reach their full potential as they prepare for
kindergarten.
