3. What is aliasing?
4. What is companding? Sketch the input-output characteristics of a compressor and an
expander.
5. What is the SNR of a PCM system if the number of quantization levels is 2^6?
6. What are the advantages of Delta Modulation?
7. What is a linear predictor? On what basis are the predictor coefficients are determined?
8. Define APF and APB.
9. What is the advantage of DPCM over PCM?
10.How ADM does alleviate problems associated with DM?

11. (a) Describe the process of sampling and how the message signal is reconstructed from its
Samples. (13)

12. (a) Explain the operation of PCM. Derive the expression for quantization noise of a PCM
system with a uniform quantizer. (13)

(ii) What is the necessity of non uniform quantization and explain companding? (6)

13. (a) Give the block diagram of differential pulse Code Modulation Scheme and explain the
principles in detail. (13)

14. (a) Draw the block diagram of Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation Scheme and
explain the principles in detail. (13)

15. (a) Consider a PCM system with an accuracy of 0.1% . The analog signal has maximum
frequency of 200 Hz and an amplitude range of 5 V to +5 V.
i) Determine the maximum required sampling rate. (4)
ii) Determine the maximum number of bits required to represent each PCM word. (3)
iii) Determine the minimum bit rate required for the PCM signal. (3)
iv) Determine the minimum absolute bandwidth required for transmission of this PCM
signal. (3)

(b) (i) Draw the block diagram of an Adaptive Delta modulator with continuously variable step
size and explain. (7)
(ii) A Delta modulator with a fixed step size of 0.75V is given a sinusoidal message signal.
If the sampling frequency is 30 times the Nyquist rate, determine the maximum
permissible amplitude of the message signal if slope overload distortion is to be
avoided. (6)
