1 FAMILY - 3 GENERATIONS!

1 FAMILY - 3 GENERATIONS! Putorti's Broadway Market, of Whitehall NY, is very excited to announce

Putorti's Broadway Market, of Whitehall NY, is very excited to announce it's 90th Year Celebration of business. Caroline Putorti, an Italian immigrant, started her little store on the first floor of her home , on Mountain Street, on Sep- tember 9, 1927. In 1950 she decided to move the store , to it's present day location, on Broadway , where there many other businesses at the time. In 1964 her son Fred and his wife Ann, took it over and ran it for 9 years. Then in 1973, Carolines' grandson Francis bought the store from his uncle and aunt, who wanted to retire, and Francis still owns and operates the family business today 45 years later. Many "mom and pop" store have not survived through the last 15-20 years due to the fact of many chain convenience stores moving into smaller towns. But Putorti's Broadway Market has continued to not only survive but grow! To celebrate "1 Family - 3 Generations" the Putorti's are hosting a Customer Appreciation Day, Saturday September 9th from 10am -2pm at the store. There will be food, soft ice cream, Italian cookies, a bouncy house for the kids, free give aways and much more. That evening they are hosting a dinner at their home, by invitation only, for their family, friends and all past employees and their families. Francis figures that through his ownership he has employed over 200 students and adults. All past employees are asked to contact the Putorti's so they can plan a number for din- ner. They can call 499-2812. They want to hear from everyone. As of right now they know they have past employees coming from Alaska, Arizona and Minnesota !

So please plan on helping them celebrate 90 years on Saturday September 9th in Whitehall !

ON THE FARM

by Andy Manne

STINK BUGS! It’s time for soybean farmers to be on the lookout for stink bug as the crop

develops pods, say Ohio State University Extension entomologists Kelley Tilmon and Andy

Michel. Scouting now is critical because soybean damage often goes undetected until harvest.

“In 2016 a number of farmers had significant stink bug damage but didn’t realize it until harvest,

when they discovered shriveled, blasted seeds,” Tilmon and Michel report in the latest issue of

C.O.R.N. newsletter. “Both nymphs (immatures) and adults feed on the developing seed by

using their piercing/sucking mouthparts to poke through the

pod. Seed that is fed upon will take a flat or shriveled

appearance.”

There are several species of stink bugs that can be

found in soybean, including the green, the brown,

the red-shouldered and the brown marmorated stink

bug (BMSB).

The heaviest populations of stink bug are usually

found in the Eastern Corn Belt, but the BMSB is

increasingly found in the central U.S.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

by Andy Manne STINK BUGS! It’s time for soybean farmers to be on the lookout

the state to scout for stink bug this season. “Planting dates were late in many areas and cool

weather has slowed plant growth, leading to delayed maturity in many areas. These late maturing

crops may remain vulnerable to pest injury longer than usual,” they write in the online newsletter

Cropwatch.

Ohio’s Tilmon and Michel write that seed damage can be prevented by scouting and treatment at

appropriate threshold levels:

“Most insecticides labeled for soybean include stink bugs on the label, and most are adequately

effective. Keep in mind it is easier to kill immatures than adults. To sample for stink bugs, take

multiple 10-sweep samples with a sweep net in multiple locations throughout the field. Average

the number of stink bugs in the 10-sweep samples. The threshold to treat is four or more stink

bugs (adults and nymphs combined). If soybeans are being grown for seed, the threshold can be

dropped to two or more stink bugs.”

DuPont Pioneer offers these additional management considerations, with particular emphasis on

the BMSB:

·Scout soybeans from R2 till mid-August.

·Scout field edges especially, and treat them separately if warranted.

·In soybean, the threshold is 2.5 to 3.5 brown marmorated stink bugs every 15 sweeps.

·Populations will be highest at dusk and dawn, and reinvasion is possible after a pesticide

treatment.

·Many insecticides are labeled for stink bug control; however, brown marmorated stink bug may

be more tolerant of many pesticides than other stinkbugs.

·Nymphs are more sensitive to insecticides than adults.

·Check local control recommendations, and always read and follow label instructions

A TRILOGY OF HERITAGE QUILTS. This collection has

been given over the years. The Museum began in 1925 as a

community service when purchased by Miss McFarland. The

Daughters of the American Revolution assumed management

until 1964 when the Cambridge Historical Society was organized

and assumed management. The Museum is a not-for-profit

organization and serves the area in collecting and preserving its

historical heritage and documents. On August 19th from 1:00

to 3:00 p.m., the Museum will present a collection of six quilts

as well as quilts brought in from area residents. It will be a

“Show & Tell” presentation. The set of 6 quilts features a quilt

made and donated by a church in the Town of Cambridge. Please

come and join the Quilt Fest. Quilts do not need to be vintage,

just loved and special so we can all enjoy them. The last exhibit

will be on September 9th. Everyone is welcome. A quilt is not

necessary to gain admission. The Museum is at 12 Broad St. in

Cambridge, NY. For more information, call 677-3327. “Saving

WELSH FAMILY HISTORY SEMINAR, “Researching your

Welsh Family Tree: DNA and Genealogy” by Susan Davies Sit,

Genealogist, to be held: Saturday, Sept. 16, 9:30 a.m. Sponsored

by the Welsh-American Genealogical Society, Inc. (WAGS), this

seminar will be held in the Town Room of historic (1805) United

Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney, Rutland County,

Vermont, a handicap accessible site. If you’ve ever wanted to

understand what all the fuss is about DNA, the presentation “DNA

and Genealogy” will enable you to understand its use in your

genealogy research, in a complete and easy-to-understand format.

Presented by Susan Davies Sit of Glastonbury, Connecticut, a

member of WAGS, one will learn about the top companies selling

DNA tests, how to read the results and what it means for your

research. The presentation has a leaning towards Welsh genealogy

but is suitable no matter your ethnicity or your roots. Additionally,

Susan may expand upon some of the topics discussed during her

presentation given in 2016 in Poultney. Susan, a native of Colwyn

Bay, Wales, has been researching for more than 40 years her own

family heritage branches as well as her husband’s, which jointly

include research in Wales, England, Scotland, the U.S.A. and

China. In addition to being a member of WAGS, Susan is President

of the Welsh Society of Western New England and a member of

the Gwynedd Family History Society (UK). A limited number of

one-on-one sessions may also be held with Susan following

luncheon. Bring your own bag lunch, or if you prefer, ample time

will permit one to go across the street to the historic, now 155-

year old, East Poultney General Store to purchase lunch from its

deli. Attendees are invited to bring a Welsh dessert to share for

the luncheon. Also after the luncheon, The Reverend Todd Eaton

of the United Baptist Church will be available to provide a guided

tour of the historic chapel; the chapel and its community which

helped to shape the formative years in the life of the late George

Jones, co-founder of The New York Times newspaper. Jones was

born in East Poultney, Vermont of Welsh–born parents having

emigrated to America from Montgomeryshire, Wales in the late

1700’s. All interested genealogists are welcome to register for

this seminar. The DNA presentation is pertinent to all heritages;

not only Welsh. PLEASE NOTE: Seating for this event is limited;

registration is first come, first serve. Cost: $30.00 (U.S. currency)

per person pre-paid registration is required no later than Saturday,

August 26, 2017 through the Welsh-American Genealogical

Society, Inc. (WAGS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Tax-

deductible donations and/or commercial sponsorships to WAGS

will be gratefully received and publicly acknowledged. Contact:

CONCERTS WITH A BANG: Thurman’s free Concerts in the

tunes of Rockabilly Hall of Fame recording artist, Marty Wendell

and his Tour Band, performing from 7 – 9 p.m. at Veterans’

Memorial Field, 311 Athol Road, Athol. Wendell in 2014 cel-

ebrated his 50th Anniversary of making music and received a
