American Photography : A Century of Images

1. What it would be like to live in a world without pictures. As a group,

make a list of what would be different in our everyday lives.
2. How do photos bring history to life?

3. Do historic photos have the ability to keep people for repeating the
mistakes of the past?

Activity:

Use Power Point to create a presentation to create individual slides for each
decade on a timeline. Use Power Point to collect at least 1 photo and
research information for the decades assigned to you from 1900 to the
present. Your photos should be documentary photos and describe a major
event in that decade. Students will then present their timeline on a large
screen on a Power Point Presentation.

1. Research the decades assigned to you. Find photos and text research of
the major events of the time. Write/reserrach at least 3 sentences about the
people, places and events in the photo.

2. Assign each student/group in the class a specific time period to cover (i.e.
1900-1910). Students will then present their timeline to the class on a
Power Point Presentation. Once all timelines are presented, they will be
posted in a central location for others to see.

3. Ongoing.Students will create a timeline of their own over the course of

an entire school year on their website. They could gather/take the photos
they think shaped life for them from September to May.
