Good morning to Mr Tamil, today we would like to present the case study of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spills. Which are
the greatest environmental disaster of all times.

Slides No.2:

Let us brief through the background of BP company.

BP company also known as British Petroleum which are a company produce global oil and gas company.

It is the fourth largest company in the world and operates in over 80 countries which producing about 3.8 million
barrels of oil per day serving 22400 stations.

Slides No.3:

However, here is the breaking news which BP Company bring to the world.

Known as The Gulf Oil Spills Disaster.

Slides No.4:

It happens within the Gulf of Mexico which near Mississippi River Delta, in United States

At April 20, 2010 which it takes almost three months to settle all the immediate problems down.

Due to the explosion of the British Petroleum operated Deepwater Horrizon oil drilling rig.

According to BBC news, the volume of oil spills up to 4.9 million per barrels and locate around 180000km2.

Slides No.5:

According to the Map, the oil spills near Mississippi Delta which extends westward to Texas.

As we can see from the pictures, oil washed up on shores, into wildlife refuges, beaches and seafood grounds.

Almost 16000 total miles of coast line have been affected; Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama are oil
rich states.

Slides No.6:

There are several consequences which bring from BP oil spills.

For economic aspect,

BPs total losses could amount to 30 billion, of which estimated total claims to the market from the disaster.

Furthermore, the projected loss to Gulf tourism was estimated at more than $22 billion. Those tourism spot and
reaction activities have to closed due to the influence of oil spills accident.

For health aspect,

There are 11 workers murdered within the Oil Spills accident.

Moreover, according to the report of Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, 143 cases of oil spills exposure
has been stated since the crisis began.

Those symptoms included dizziness, vomiting, nausea, headaches and chest pains.

Slides No.7:
For ecology aspect,

As of November 2, 2010, there are total 6814 dead animals had been collected, including: 6104 birds, 609 sea turtles,
100 dolphins and other mammals, and 1 other reptile.

According to scientists, the ecosystem could require years or even decades to recover, as BP oil spills have done.

Slides No.8:

Why the BP oil spills could happen?

Lets us show u the reason.

According to scientist, BP oil spills occur because of the unstable cementing process of the oil pipe to the well and the
inherent risks of drilling to extreme depths. Indeed, the abnormal pressure caused a methane bubble. Those methane
gases escaped from the well and ignited. As a result, the explosion occurs and it took less than five minutes for the rig
to ignite on fire.

Now I would like to pass on to Suhaida for further presentation.

Good morning, sir and my fellow audience.

There are four main criticism on ethical theories which can be related to BP oil spills, those are Profit Maximization,
Utilitarianism, Respect for Individuals, and Violation of Code of Ethics.

Slides No.10:

What is profit maximization?

It can be said that a choice among alternative actions that produces the greatest return or social utility.

According to government investigation, BP putting profit over the safety of workers which caused 11 workers killed
and 17 injured.

For instance, BP rejects a safety proposal to install casing liner and casing stabilizers which cost $7 million and 10+
hour of labour.

Furthermore, BP management knowing that the Deepwater Horizon had problems, but did not take any action. In an
email BP engineer Brian Morel called Deepwater a "nightmare rig" due to these cavalier safety risks.

The management of BP ignored the Red Flags signals from their procedural tests.

Slides No.11:

What is utilitarianism?

It is an ethical value which selects the action that brings about the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of
people.

BP ignored the utilitarianism value in which they failed to prioritize stakeholders before and after the incident.

In this case, publics welfare had been sacrificed because BP company tried to conceal the oil spill issues and bypass
those mechanical dysfunction documents. They also debate that the explosion were entirely "unforeseeable. to keep
away from fines that they need to pay to influenced nation.

Slides No.12:

Respect for individuals can be said that moral values in which all people deserve the right to fully exercise
their autonomy.

We can see from the email below, the words which pointed out:

One of the BP company engineer wrote that sentences, Who cares, its done, end of the story, will probably be fine
and well get a good cement job.

BP failed to practice this ethical value as they did not value their mankind personnel. Indeed, they value more highly
to time savings and funds compared to the precautions of their own company workers. As result, the 11employees
murdered inside the rigs spoil.

Slides No.13:

Violation of code of ethics is a set of principles and rules of companies and individuals to govern their decision
making in choosing between right and wrong.

BP may think hiding the oil spill damage can help to mitigate the public panic, avoiding unnecessary chaos. With less
panic, BP can focus on their cleaning-up measures. Thus BP hid information to bring maximum benefit to the public
and themselves with the assumption that BP quickly and diligently cleans up the oil spill. However, it is most likely
that BP hid the information for hidden agenda: to evade penalty that they have to pay to affected countries
government and take less clean up measures.

Besides that, BP also withholding crucial information by holding back a video which point out the valid degree of the
oil leakage.

Nonetheless, they also Buying online search engines and scientists to manipulate resources and info to rescue the
firm reputation.

Good morning sir and my fellow audience, here are some company recoveries in which BP Company has been
implemented after the disaster/accident.

Including chemical dispersant, Bioremediation, Spill Containment and Clean Water Act, and Public Volunteer
Program.

Slides No.15:

There are two techniques which implemented within spill containment and clean water act.

First will be Floating Booms, it is the container and floating barriers which separate those clean sea water from oil
pollution.

It also deflects oil away from sensitive habitats and keeps oil from spreading out.

According to scientist, it can be considered as a cheap and effective method as compared to others.

Second will be Skimmers, this activities was bring out by boats and other marine devices.

It removes oil from water surface before it reaches sensitive areas.

Third method will be chemical dispersants.

BP Company also sprayed chemical dispersants onto sea surface by using planes.

Those chemical dispersants will breaks down oil into smaller structures, once oil in the sea is broken down to smaller
droplets, microbes will consume these smaller droplets of oil.

However, it brings out negative impact that can affect marine organisms like deep water corals and seagrass.

Slides No.17:

BP Company also using bioremediation for seashore recovery activities.

It is a formula that fertilises and spread those biological agents such as phosphorus and nitrogen bacteria over the
shoreline.

It can foster microorganism growth and therefore break down oil into natural components.

It can be the most effective degradation of oil spills.

Slides No.18:

Public volunteers also try to help clean up birds and animals such as these sea otters, however, many of them are
beyond help and die.
Slides No.19: (Jean)

Good morning to sir and my fellow audience, here are the total financial report which stated by Exxon Valdez from
Oil Spill Recovery Team.

He said that The cost of removing oil offshore (by either dispersants or mechanical recovery) averaged $7,000/tonne,
whereas shoreline clean up ran as high as $$300,000/tonne

As result, the total cost for this one oil spill was approximately around $2,000,000,000.

Slides No.20:

According to Justice Department attorney - Mike Underhill, he said that the evidence show that BP put profits before
people, profits before safety and profits before the environment.

Indeed, Business Company should imply ethical values with their business transaction.

There are four ethical practices that we recommend to BP company which are the practice of adhering to Company
Corporate Social Responsibility, Take full responsibility, Whistle-Blowing, Honesty, Accountability and Trust.

Slides No.21:

BP Management had been implementing poor and selfish decisions. For instance, Goal-oriented Leadership skills
which focused on getting the job done without regard for the outcomes:

The management and technician team rushing for the completion of the well without consider the possible safety risk
within the oil rig. They also minimize huge finance and funds in order to cut cost and rush the job done, in which
resulting the occurrence of oil explosion.

However, we recommend that BP company should adhering to Companys Corporate Social Responsibility in which
the safety precaution and procedure such as liner/tieback option and 21 centralizers would be chosen in operation.
Besides, Cement bond log would also be performed. Although the first option would cost a lot of money and time, but
it will provide highest safety option and it would sure prevent the tragedy.

Slides No.22:

After the oil spill disaster, BP given their first public statement, in which put towards the blame for the accident to
Transocean, It shows that the behaviour of avoiding responsibility towards stakeholders.

However, BP Company should take full responsibility and prioritize the needs of stakeholders over profits.

They should enhance safety and risk management, grow value and build trust in order to have a positive role to play in
shaping the long-term future of energy and rescue their company reputation.

Slides No.25:

There are silent cultures practiced with BP organization. BP employees shared the same sentiment which noticed that
THERE WERE CERTAIN THINGS THAT WERE NOT RIGHT WHICH MIGHT LEAD TO SERIOUS SAFETY
PERCUSSIONS, but theyre afraid to speak out, as it might risk their jobs.

However, we recommend that BP should engage on a whistle-blowing hotline where employees can file allegations
against their own company anonymously. By this way, employees will be more vocal about their concerns without
having to worry about their employment.

Slides No.26:

The BP management minimize company costs and withhold the video which showing the true magnitude of the
leakage of oil spills on the huge ecologic catastrophe in Deepwater horizon.
However, BP Management should enhance the ethical values such as, honesty, accountability and trust. For instance,
BP should share accurate information to bring maximum benefit to the public. The authority and environmentalists
also need to know the actual data so they can take the appropriate measures to solve the oil spill.

Slides No.28:

As conclusion, we would like to quote a statement said by Henry Ford, that a business that makes nothing but money
is a poor business.
