As per IEEE guide for the measurement of PD in AC Electric machinery IEEE P1434 ,
comments on Electromagnetic probe ( Corona probe / TVA probe ) readings are as
follows.

These readings are not greatly effected by the winding configuration, but they do reflect the
particular insulation system and the condition of the surface coatings and end arms.
Although the comparison of the results from similar machines is the best way of
establishing appropriate limiting values, some users have found by experience that the
condition of the coils / bars should be questioned when peak pulse readings in milliamps
peak pulse at operating voltage exceed the following values.

----- Asphalt Mica: 100 mA

----- Polyster mica: 30 mA
------ Epoxy mica: 20 mA

In the case of polyester mica and epoxy mica insulation systems, readings in excess of these
limits frequently are caused by slot discharge, for which corrective measures are available.
In the present case, as the measured values are very low, it can be concluded that there are
no slot discharges and condition of the corona protection is good.

2. Polarisation & Depolarisation:

Normally, these tests on generator windings are analysed from the Polarization &
Depolarisation graphs only. Commonly Q1, Q2, Q3 values, Ic/ Ir and dispersion ratios are
seen for the laboratory tests on dielectric materials only. Internationally, no OEMs of
generators follow these analysis except ABB services who is not an OEM.

In the present case, linearity in the polarization and depolarization characteristics of

the dielectric and low values of dielectric discharge indicate that there is no
abnormality in the stator winding ground wall insulation.

3. Tan delta test results indicate some ageing symptoms in the ground wall insulation
and no contamination in the end winding.

4. Powertest Asia follows IEEE 62.2 and EPRI guide lines for the condition assessment of
generator insulation system / RLA studies. Trend analysis of test results give better
information for the condition assessment of the insulation system. In the absence of
earlier test results, present tests on generator indicate that the condition of the
generator electrical insulation system is in satisfactory condition and the generator
can be operated under normal load conditions with out any problem up to the next
overhaul in 2 to 3 years.
5. As the insulation system is in satisfactory condition, no rectification is recommended.
