DIMETHYL SULFIDE

(CH3)2S.
Emissions from
Phytoplankton.
Occurs over oceans.
SULFUR DIOXIDE

SO2
Emissions.
Industries example :
power plants.
Volcanoes.
SULFUR TRIOXIDE

SO3
Primary agent in
acid rain.
SULFURIC ACID

H2SO4
Principal uses include: ore
processing.
Fertilizer processing.
Oil refining.
AMMONIUM SULFATE

(NH4)2SO4
Made when ammonia reacts with
H2SO4
Uses:
Fertilizer.
Agricultural spray.
Aids for water soluble pesticides.
HYDROGEN SULFIDE

H2S.
Emitted by volcanoes and hot
springs.
Remains in atmosphere for 18
hours.
Changes into sulfur dioxide.

ECOSYSTEM
Effects of Human Activities
on the Sulfur Cycle
We add sulfur dioxide to the
atmosphere by:
Burning coal and oil.
Refining sulfur containing petroleum.
Convert sulfur-containing metallic ores
into free metals such as copper, lead,
and zinc releasing sulfur dioxide into the
environment.
IMPORTANCE

Nutrient for organisms.

Bacteria oxidize sulfur for
energy.
Factor for plant productivity.
