Best from waste
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Getting the best out of waste is the most important way one can contribute to the environment.
Best out of waste ideas are limitless and creating using these ideas can be loads of fun. It was
the brain child of the Head of Department, and few teachers. It is creating something useful out
of waste things. This concept has gained global significance and is catching on fast.

The age old non working Power Supplies were searched in the department and useful
components were detected by the students. The usable components and devices were used to
prepare new power supplies. It has achieved many fold advantages. The students had got a
hands-on experience about detecting working components as well as creating something new
from the scrap. Students learned the precautions to be taken while handling old electronic
instruments. How to assemble and fabricate new things in itself is very meaningful to students.
Buying new costly power supplies was averted due to this act which added to cost saving,
moreover, this endeavor is our contribution towards the environment. These projects made out of
waste materials can be made by students of all age groups starting from Juniors to UG and PG
level. It also depends upon the level and degree of project that one has in mind.

Best out of waste ideas come to mind every time one sees something that has been lying around
and needs either be repaired or needs a sprucing up. Students were given the tasks which were
based on this concept and it taught us how best redundant and waste instruments can be used.
Great contribution to the environment is best out of waste idea that helps to revamp instead of
merely discarding things without thought. This is something that has been inculcated very
consciously, in the minds of students today. So, whenever something redundant or wasteful is
seen the first thought that should come to mind is can I reuse this instead of completely
discarding it.
This includes used electronic products which are destined for disposal. This way it may provide
the solution to the growing problem of e-waste. By dismantling and providing reuse possibilities,
intact natural resources are conserved and air and water pollution caused by hazardous disposal
is avoided. Additionally, reusing old reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by
the manufacturing of new products. We can make the best use of waste materials lying stashed
up in the hidden corners of the store room to keep the students occupied with new thoughts and
to encourage them to try out new things.

Use of non-conventional energy (Solar
Power) for less energy consumption
Renewable energy sources also called non-conventional energy, are sources that are continuously
replenished by natural processes. A renewable energy system converts the energy found in
sunlight that can be used as electricity. Most of the renewable energy comes either directly or
indirectly from sun which can never be exhausted and therefore are called renewable.

Solar energy is the most readily available and free source of energy since ancient times. It is
estimated that solar energy equivalent to over 15,000 times the worlds annual commercial
energy consumption reaches the earth every year. Solar photovoltaic uses suns heat to produce
electricity for lightening of buildings, laboratories, home, running motors, pumps and electric
appliances.

In solar thermal route, solar energy can be converted into thermal energy with the help of solar
collectors and receivers.

Energy from the Sun can be captured in as light energy. Photovoltaic technology also known as
solar panels, converts the suns light energy into an electrical energy. Solar power systems are
getting popular in our country. While the upfront cost of a solar power system is bit high, but
once installed they require little maintenance, and can be expected to last 20 years or more. The
electricity that is generated from the solar panel is almost free for such long periods. The cost of
solar panels is coming down quickly and systems are becoming affordable.

Through the efforts of the Head of Department and few Electronics lecturers a team of students
was formed. Those students have made all efforts to set up the solar panels in the laboratories
and in premises of the Apsara garden. Since it is possible to store this electrical energy and no
need to use lights in day time hence less reliant on buying electricity from the grid is possible.

Mostly in summer that too at the time of practical examinations there are voltage breakdowns
and the exams are held up. Due to the installation of solar panels this difficulty of frequent cuts
in electricity has been overcome. The process of converting sunlight into electricity using
photovoltaic systems produces no greenhouse gas emissions. Any excess electricity above the
needs can be fedback into the mains power grid or into storage system like a battery bank.

Depending on the location, electricity consumption and the system size, installing solar panels
may produce part of electricity requirement. It could represent a substantial saving on our
electricity bill. With a certain capacity of storage, a batter will be sufficient to make an average
Laboratory independent from the normal electricity but can manage peak electricity demand.

Numerous studies have shown that renewable solar energy can be rapidly deployed to provide a
significant share of future electricity needs, even after accounting for potential constraints such
as limits of transmission capacity and other hurdles such as the higher costs of solar panels. The
sources of renewable solar energy have the technical potential to provide all the electricity to the
Institute needs.
