MIHAIL PRINTS

Mihail’s prints on paper could be defined to these day by three

main periods: Works printed in Tunisia (1965-1071), works printed
in New York (1971-1976), and works printed in Millbrook, NY
(1989-1993).

In Tunisia and in New York the artist printed from carved plaster
plates without the use of a press.

The Tunisian prints, light and colorful embody the culture of old
Cartagena and manifest the first appearance of his Sunday
Morning Elements and their vocabulary of images that later on the
artist developed in large bronze and paper sculptures. In contrast
the New York prints are severe and subdued in colors, occupying
their space resolutely and with intensity right to the edges
reflecting the artist state of mind at that time.

The Millbrook prints, joyful and decorative are printed from

masonite or copper plates under heavy press.

This presentation reverses the artist journey going back to Tunisia

where Mihail first tasted freedom after life under communist
dictatorship and where the abundance of light, color and humanity
imbedded forever his sense of sculptural form.

The elephant was never harmed. Mihail incorporated the cast of the
sleeping elephant in a bronze work of art given to the United Nations by
Kenya, Namibia and Nepal. Inaugurated by UN secretary-General Kofi
annan on October 18, 1998.

life in Tunisia

After a turbulent confrontation with the the communist

dictator of Bulgaria caused by a public monument Mihail
had erected in Sofia’s cathedral square the artist exiled
himself from his native country to Tunisia where he
completed sculptural commissions.

Enchanted by the light and colors of the country as Paul

Klee, August Macke and Louis Moilliet had been years
earlier, in 1914. Mihail drew watercolors and made prints
from carved plaster plates and without the use of a
press. The about 25 editions of 25 prints each contain
and express the artist’s fascination for his new
environment - Tunisia’s noble culture and way of life.
