FLAT
ROOFS
Figure 2.1. Conceptual Framework Diagram

The independent variables of this study are the profession of the people to be

surveyed by the researchers; the knowledge of the respondents regarding modern designs

of structures, especially of flat roofs, and the advantages and disadvantages of flat roofs;

and the materials used in the construction of flat roofs.

The appearance of the flat roof depends on the knowledge of the owner and the

materials used for construction. The more information the owner knows about flat roofs,

the better he can have it designed. The finished output would also vary in appearance

depending on the materials used.

The convenience of the roof depends on the knowledge of the owner to maximize

it and have it for what purpose it was designed for. Its convenience depends on the

materials since some materials are stronger than the others that allow the roof to be used

more. Sturdier materials allow constant human access to the roof so that it may be used as

a greenhouse, rooftop decks and such while these are not advisable for other materials.

The cost of constructing the flat roof depends on the materials that are used. For

example, steel is more costly than uncured timber. Different roof coverings also vary in

prices. Consequently, the duration of the construction also depends on the materials.

Some take longer to dry and settle in place than others. Different materials are also

constructed in different ways that affect the time it takes to finish the roof.

The durability and lifespan of the flat roof depends on the materials used and the

knowledge of the owner. Some materials are more durable than the others but the

knowledge of the owner on how to maintain them plays a huge role in making the

structure last. Better materials and proper maintenance of the roof prolong its lifespan.

The preference of what type of roof to use depends on the knowledge of the

owner. What he knows about the different types of roofs and the facts about them affects

the roof-type preference of the owner including the way the flat roof will be used.

Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of roofs is helpful in

this variable. The profession of the owner also plays a huge role in this. For example, a

civil engineer knows the advantages of the different types of roofs regarding their

strength and durability while an architect knows their advantages regarding their design.

DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

Commercial Area near the city proper

Drainage a route or course along which water moves or may move to drain a region

Lapping act of folding over or around something; act of enclosing in a cover or binding

Pitch the ratio of rise to span; the inclination of a roof as determined by the ration of

the height to the span

Residential Area far from the city proper

Rise the vertical distance from the top of the top plate to the upper end of the measuring

line

Run one half of the span (except when the slope of the roof is irregular)

Seam a joining by a line of stitching of two pieces of cloth leather, or other material

usually near the edge

Slope the ratio of rise to run; to incline from horizontal to vertical

Span the distance between the outer edges of the top plates

Truss an assemblage of members typically arranged in a triangle
